I would LOVE to see NPCs start using my first name! There are two ways I envision this being done:
1. It would NOT be hard to incorporate say, 100 of the most common names for men and women. The voice actors could simply read these into a mic in a few different inflections -- angry, happy, sexy, urgent, etc, pick your adjective. These could then simply be added to the voice interaction in the game. You could EASILY, dear voice programmer, make a list of these names @ character generation.
If you want to see what names people want to see, make a list of 200 names for men and 200 for women and then have fans vote on those names. Take the top 100.
2. The potentially more difficult way is to "teach" your program to recognize phonemes and morphemes and use a linguistic subroutine (we use them in teaching little kids English) to have the game say the name you want correctly. You could even have a little interactive thing where people can make the game learn to say names as people want them said.
I realize that this is probably a VERY personal pet peeve, but I really want my love interest to call me by my first name. I get tired of Liara or Ash or Miranda calling me Shepard in the sack . . . Commander is a bit kinky and fun, but even that gets wearing, lol.
Thank you for reading this and maybe even considering it. I hope enough others think this way to make it happen.
All the best!

That would probably be rather costly & highly time consuming.

It's way too much work for such a minor thing, resoursces would be much better spent elsewhere.
If the writers wanted a character to adress you by a more personal name they'd have the character give you a pet name or something. Besides, I know plenty of people who go by their last name instead of their first, it's not unusual.

One day. Look at computer games 20 years ago and look at them today. But not today.

It's something I dislike as well - but, with the advent of the VA... I will be an old man when games finally start using a name of my choosing again.

I'll pass, from those of us whom have exotically sexy names, no dice.

Hundred names from where? There are a decent amount of people who use names that aren't anglo-saxon. My Shepards all have names derived from Greek or astrological terms. Meridian might be doable- Alalē not so much.
I'm perfectly happy with Shepard, tbh.

No, besides the player knows who Shepard first name is.
If anybody has been that vid with Harby who says "Shepard" as if tomorrow didn't exist. Replace that with a first name. Then, imagine how many would go: "Hey, that's my Shepard's name!" getting pissed cause someone else took it!
You do get on occasion where your Shepard's name is called if another character has that name, but that is often pure coincidence.

This. Most people outside of my family call me Sedge.TheCrakFox wrote...

If they were to allocate more money to VO then I would rather them spending it on more dialoge than trying to add first names for Shepard.

As long as people can't exploit this system for their own entertainment....**mind wanders off....
Nah, I'd rather get my facial generator, where ME takes a front and side shot of your head, and creates a facial model based off that. Much more awesome than a first name (not that your idea isn't good). It's just for the resources and money, it'd be better spent getting some awesome feature.

They do that in FIFA games.... It's a long list, too.... It would be nice, but it's not, at all, vital.

I've got another idea just use your characters fist name in an email say Billy sends you an email saying, " I'm coming for you Xian Shepard" That way your name is in there but no one has to record lines for it. Also space shep's mom if she emails him can say their first name there.

They already do refer to my Shep by his/her first name. Commander.

^^^ I actually contemplated naming my guy "Shepard Shepard" because it can be a first name too, and it can feel like some characters are referring to him by first name. But I decided against it.

Pfft first names, I actually imagine one of my two Sheps having a different surname than "Shepard".

Yes, I want the crew to call one of my Shepard by the name I gave her....Obi-Bong. Just hearing that would make me laugh for a good five minutes.

How about a pitch, tone, and volume synthesized voice of characters that say Shepard's first name? E.G. Computer Narrators can say words that are on the computer screen as long as they are known and understandable. That system would suffice and not be THAT hard and time consuming.

If you dont think it would be that hard or time consuming, by all means develop iot and give it to Bioware to implement.

As cool as an idea as that is, BioWare has a lot more things to fix before they add more customization.
Besides, it's just easier to give Shepard a nickname. Kasumi calls Shepard "Shep", Ashley referred to a romantic partner Shepard as Skipper... If they give more nicknames from different characters, I'd be just fine with that. Hell, I'd enjoy it.
But not before other things get fixed.

Eh. As others have said, this would just require SO much more work. Having to record hundreds of VA's saying your particular first name, multiplied by how many combinations of first names you want to allow...and then no matter what, you arent going to be able to cover every name out there.
You are, after all a military man (or woman) and being addressed by your last name, or rank when it comes to your subordinates is pretty standard fare. I would much rather the time/resources be spent on content than pointless fluff, but thats just me.

Do you refer to your teachers by they're first names or they're second ones? If it can be done, good, but seems like a hassle and there are too many names for you to find your own in just a list of 200.
Things like these could happen....
"Why is my name in the girl list?"

SInce I know my name wont be included, I couldn't care less. But even if it was, this is Bioware and they would have it pronounced two different ways, one of them incorrectly.
