It would be a cool idea for BW to have a competition or a lottery. The winner(s) are allowed to send the first name of their (main) Sheps to BW and they get voiced into the game in a couple of places. The game then checks the name of your Shep and if it fits, the name is used by e.g. your LI.

I guess they could do at least the default names
I think the conversations would sound when the name doesn't quiet fit the sentence because it was recorded seperately from the line.

People already refer to the player as Shepard. It's not that big a deal. Why have BW spend money on something that doesn't need to be fixed. Besides, I tend to not use common names when naimg my Sheps. I think most people are the same way. I've seen some interesting first names for some people's Sheps.
I don't want to see BW spend anything on this. The money should go to things like dialog or more side missions or cooler weapons and mods.

They could always just use some "high-tech" software like Doctor Sbaitso and use that to simulate Shep's first name, depending on what it was typed as (pre-emptive cookie to anyone old enough to remember Dr. Sbaitso)

How about some gaelic names, like; Siobhan, Aonghus, Beitidh.
My ears would bleed hearing any form of speech synth software trying to say them.

Besides, I know plenty of people who go by their last name instead of their first, it's not unusual.
Among military types- which Shepard is - it is quite common. In fact, it is almost surprising that she calls everyone else, even her fellow soldiers, by their first names. Though, I imagine they reason it would be too jarring for the average person to get used to. (I know when my roommate and his army buddies get together it is always strange to hear them only using last names)

You know as well as I do that Mass Effect would be inundated with countless vulgar or stupid first names just to hear the speech software say it
Admit it... you typed: I.P. Freely... Al Coholic... Jacques Strap... etc or their far less "family friendly" equivalent into Dr. Sbaitso back in the day, just to hear the computer say it.
I know I did. :innocent: (actually I typed in Mary Poppins full super-kala-fraga-listic song into it once.... the rendition it spat out was mind blowingly accurate and understandable

A list of common (american) boy names, girl names and a list of pet names.
Me being from Europe had to go with the pet names - It was kinda cool that they called you by the pet name of your choice over the radio when saying there was a crash up ahead and you should stay right, so it could be done but so many would be disappointed their names wasn't on the list.

I already find it odd that Shepard addresses his team by their first names right from the first meeting. That just isn't done where I come from.
Apart from that, I wouldn't expect my Shepard's names to be anywhere near the top 100.

Some kind of list is also a bead idea. If you place it as variables in the lines it will mess dialogues, cause "Paul" is faster spoken than "Kathrine" so they would have to voice every line which uses first name multiple times.
Besides Commander Shepard is very iconic and I´m happy if Ash still refers to Shep as "Skipper"
