In a way, yes. Though DA2 was a thoroughly average game, it did do many things better than the original game can claim.

Please. Don't let's go there. You make it sound DA:O was worse, and I am trying to play nice here. :P

- Some of the companions, namely Varric, were easily the best part of the game, although I wished they had more dialogue and conversation opportunities.
- Act 2 is probably the best part of the game - there's a situation that is built up and eventually comes to a head (Act 3 tried to do this, but it ended up feeling extremely rushed)
- The Friendship/Rivalry, while needing to developed further, was an improvement over the Approve/Disapprove system of DA:O
- The Skill Trees were another great idea (although the level and point requirements caused the system to shoot itself in the foot, as you still ended up having to take skills you didn't want to get ones you did)
- Force Mage is an awesome idea, and I hope to see it again in future titles.

- Cross-class combos. I felt like there was more synergy in my party during combat.

- R to Loot All. Convenient.

- 'Junk' tab and 'Sell All Junk' button. Convenient.

- The Qunari. They looked better in my opinion.

- The Arishok. He is a memorable character, and the only memorable character in the game for me.

For a combination Frisbee, coaster, paperweight, and table-leveler, it does it's jobs decent enough.

Varric is another character that I really liked. Like Isabela I didn't have high hopes for him because he got a bit too much attention based on nothing from the fans before the release. That changed during the game. Of course it helps that Varric played a large part in the framed narrative. It also helps that he acted as a kind of glue to stick the different parts of the game together. He is very funny, but also a gentle and a caring character. That makes him easy to like. Instead of being sentimental he had a funny way to protect his a friends. The idea was great, but it could have been taken a step further to achieve more logic as to why some of the characters like Merrill and Anders could survive a hostile town like Kirkwall. Once part of the crew, Varric never left my company. It was fun to have him around and at times he was hilarious.

Accidentally quoted my own post. <_<

I can add that the gift system has significantly improved, though there isn't as much character interaction in DA2 than in Origins.

Absolutely, lets keep this thread clean of comparison. It seems a good place to share thoughts.

Its sad when the most enjoyable parts of this game were:
1. Seeing Flemeth, Zevran, Alistair and Leliana.
2. Listening to discussions about the Hero of Ferelden.
3. Fighting dragons.
4. Hearing fate of Orzammar and their kings.
5. Visiting Dalish Elfes.

Notice a pattern here....

The fourth character I liked was Sebastian. He tied very well into the game. Like Elthina he had a more DA:O-like character interaction and like her he was well-portrayed with (relative to the other companions) a lot of dialogue. I am not a chantry fan, but these two characters made the chantry more alive than just being an empty building or an institute. That gave the final events concerning the chantry and Elthina more impact. Sebastian's background story was interesting, but because the story mainly existed in dialogue only it also resulted in me waiting for events that never came. I also liked that his bow had a background story. It would have been nice if it was a high end weapon, though. His armor looked great and fitted his character.

Things I Liked Heaps and Gobs
1. Party Banter - Some of the best banter in a Bioware game--with Origins being its main competitor.
2. Character Side Quests - I liked having new side quests in each act and each character having a story arc they completed over the course of the side quests.
3. Act II and the Arishok
4. Cross-class combos
5. Force mechanic
6. Dialogue options changing based on personality type--something I only noticed on additional playthroughs.
7. Archer rogues feeling a lot better in combat than in DAO

As for characters, I liked all of them with Varric, Isabela and Merrill being my favorites.

Rogues ninja spin kicking flasks to fire them at enemies was pretty amusing. I mean, why toss a flask when you can do a spinning jump kick, possibly missing the flask or breaking it with the kick or even breaking a few bones in your foot. And, even if you do kick the flask, there's little guarentee it is going where you want it to go. Now that I think about it, all the rogue animations were just AWESOME! Mages had the second best animations, thank goodness they jerk and spin around when they do their generic attack, looping the same animation every five seconds. It's never redundant and it totally makes sense they would expend so much effort to posture with their staves, I mean using a default attack should look harder than casting a powerful spell. I also love that they can only use staves, choices are so last decade. Warriors look so strong now, twirling two handed swords with one hand like they were weightless batons. When you can do that who needs ranged weapons or the ability to dual wield? Sadly, they only come in third place for attack animations wth their blatant SPARTAN-AWESOMENESS! I really felt like I could think like a General too, not just a Commander. Who wants to be a commander right?

To be honest, after completing the game, I missed the characters. I found something to like about all of the characters and I loved Fenris as a character. <3

I didn't quite feel this strongly about characters in DA:O though. I should probably go replay it.

1. Varric
2. Merrill
3. The Arishok and the Qunari
4 Having siblings and the emotional impact of certain events surrounding them.
5. The little things, like Harrowmont's exiled son wanting revenge and the young elf trying to murder the former werewolf.
6. Isabella and Zevran meeting once more.
7. Yeah, I'll say it. Anders inner turmoil and fall into madness.

If only Act three was sensible, this game would have been a real gem, better than Origins. Instead it falls behind, but there's still a lot to love.

Best things about DA 2 for me...Varic, a more personal storyline (although I absolutely love the epic quest of Origins, DA 2 just feels more personal a story of one man/woman trying to live their life), the combat system, and of course, Merrill and Varic.

And yes, I know I used Varic twice. He's just that awesome.

Evolution of character, wonderful companions, brilliant actors, great story (and the way the story was told, through Varric), fun gameplay, voiced protagonist, dog and dog banter, act structure, that feeling of hopelessness of choice felt through the very end of Act 3 (which was great, really, really great) and, on the flip side, the choices that did impact impacted heavily and were fantastic.

Friendship/Rivalry still needs some work for me to adore it, but it's getting there.

Squad banter, Squad banter, Squad banter, Squad banter, Squad banter, Squad banter.

The only flaw is how your companions magically appear in a cutscene talking to the companion you're visiting when he or she was only by your side moments ago.

One of the best things about DA2, IMO, was the main cast. Varric, Aveline and Fenris were my absolute favorites but I found myself attached to all of them by the end. I have quite a few problems with the way Bioware limited our interaction with them but the characters themselves were fantastic, IMO.

I'm intrigued. What is so good about Merrill? Is it her submissive little mouse thing?

As far as I'm concerned, anything's better than the atrocity called Isabela.

They tried to appeal to the Liara crowd with Merrill, I guess. She ( Merrill ) was far too one-dimensional for my liking, though.

I agree, she seems a bit similar to Liara to me, too.  I liked her accent, and I think she was the best looking of all the redesigned elves, though, yes, giraffe neck is an issue.  The blood-magic using/ do anything to reclaim heritage parts of her personality just didn't seem to gel with the rest, for me at least.  I do think, however, the companions were better than most standard fare in video games.

Varric made the game for me, I love his random tid-bits.

And Isabella's "I like big boats, i cannot lie." Made me forgive her.

Yeah.  I like random rap song call outs in my fantasy RPG's.  Just makes it real.  Hoping we'll have a Lady Gaga DLC where Hawke can dress up and sing like Lady Gaga..male or female..who cares!  Maybe Varric can do 'Stairway to Heaven' on his magic SAW crossbow.  Too bad the Arisuck couldn't do a little singing cow commercial for us.

Yes, it's a game, its supposed to be fun.  But people don't buy Bioware games for Leisure Suit Larry in-jokes and snarky asides.  They buy it for an excellent role playing experience..and DA2 wasn't it.  This game fell way below their standards.  Writing was JV at best.  Save the stupid in jokes for the office party outtakes.

I was the lowly peasant intern. :) I wrote Magistrate's Orders, Gamlen's Greatest Treasure, Murder of Crows
and a few other side quests.

I always look forward to those 3 quests during my playthroughs! I was going to mention what I liked about each quest but I just realized I cannot spoil anything so im going to try free of spoilers. here it goes!

I adored the person you meet during Gamlen's Greatest Treasure! I hope we see more from the person in the future.

Magistriate's orders was a great quest! It wasn't a quest where I could make a quick decision and be on my way. On my 4th playthrough I was still questioning myself about what to do because of the circumstances. I just wish their was more consequences for my decision, I thought a decision I made could of came back to haunt me, and in one aspect it did, but in the other it really didn't (Sorry that it is vague, I didn't know how else to say it without spoiling anything).

Murder of the Crows!! I love that quest to pieces! I always save that one for last because I love listening to a certain someone ../../../images/forum/emoticons/love.png

Overall I thought those three quests in particular were nicely done, for a "lowly peasant intern" that is. :D

And yet several people on this very thread listed it as something they like about the game.  I tend to agree, it destroys the role-playing experience. But every day I see more and more people who only care about roleplaying inasmuch as it involves choosing some dialogue and customizing appearance.  If Bioware doesn't take it upon themselves to ... "educate" those who perhaps don't have a firm grasp of roleplaying concepts by making it important in all aspects of the game, then I only see this "big boats" type of thing increasing.

Then again, there is a literal interpretation which fits within the setting and character.

I used to read your posts on the NWN2 boards (I was lurking then).  I wish more people from those boards were posting here regularly to help rebalance the discussion.

Well, me, I love some references to real life things, all those references to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Origins made me smile so much. while they made me get out of character on occasion in Origins, I would not want them gone. in DA2 that never mattered as I never was in character.
