1) Halo -    "combat revolved"
2) Half-Life 2 -  I still, really, just do not understand why everyone thinks this game is so great!?!
3) CoD -  Yes, I'm Captain Obvious
4) Bulletstorm -  The gimmick wore off after 30 minutes...
5) Borderlands -  Or, Borederlands as I like to call it.

Overrated games?

Hmm..

Gears of War was good, but not as good as many made it out to be.

Also, anything with Mario in it.

I agree with Call of Duty and Bulletstorm.

Call of Duty especially. It's just a cash grab and the people who buy it deserve to never get a COD that is different because they only fuel the cicle of not changing anything and releasing the same game.

Bulletstorm...I had fun but yea after an hour who cares. It's too much money to justify paying for something that is just racking points up.

Halo 1 is great and I am so looking forward to the remastered Halo.
I can't speak about Half Life 2 since I never finished it I stopped at some city with people fighting..it was a long time ago.

Borderlands is where I disagree with you. With 3 friends it can be really fun. Granted the quests or story isn't good but it's fun getting a world to screw around with my friends.

I'll have to add Dragon Age Origins. I am NOT I repeat NOT saying it's a bad game. Just overrated. The story is cliche, it's not what was promised. It didn't feel reminiscent of Baldur's Gate or even dark fantasy. It's an ugly game and nowhere near the complexity of BG1 or 2. No idea why it's called the spiritual successor it felt nothing like imo.

Grand Theft Auto 4. I simply do not find it fun. I own I have tried playing it after years of having it and it finally be playable on PC I found out I don't care. It's so boring.

Bioshock. Again I'm not saying it's a bad game but I have no idea why it recieved so much attention. I found it fun for the gameplay I wasn't impressed with the story and the twist is about as good as anything M. Night shyamalan has done meaning it's not.

Biggest one that comes to mind is vanilla Oblivion. It has so many issues with bugs, animation, leveling, voices, etc. I do like the game for its open world environment, but if it wasn't for the huge number of mods to adjust most of the issues I have with it I wouldn't be able to have much fun with the game.

The only game on your list that I've played is Borderlands and I agree 100%.

I bought it because the artwork style looked interesting and I like Post Apocalyptic settings. (although I gather Borderlands takes place on another planet) However, the dialogue and voice acting was excruciatingly bad.

One character in particular, the robot Clap Trap was so painfully corny that I wanted to throw my shoe at my projector display every time he opened his trap. Borderlands is probably the game I hated the most out of all the games I've ever played.

Is DA2 rated highly? Judging by the vitriol on the DA forum, it seems to be under rated IMO.

QFT

Another big one that comes to mind is WoW.  You can't have a list of the most overrated games of all time without that one.
I might add Diablo to that list too.  I played it when it came out and it was fun for a few hours and then it got boring, I didn't have much interest in playing it again.  I'm not sure why it was as huge as it was.  I think the openning cinematic helped it, because the gameplay got old pretty quick and there wasn't much of a plot to it.

As PC gamer, I have to agree on Halo. It wasn't very good on PC IMO, highly repetative levels, etc. There was better stuff available at the time (can't speak for consoles, I think it came out much earlier for them, right?)
Half Life 2 was a ery good game IMO. It was hyped for ******'s atmosphere and for its physics puzzles and it delivered on both (graphics were also pretty neat at the time).
CoD is just that, CoD. If you don't know what you are getting into by now, you have lived on Mars for the past 4 years so who cares.
Bulletstorm - never played it
Borderlands: The single player is boring and I never played it in MP but I can imagine that it might be fun n co-op

I actually have a hard time coming up with titles. I usually get informed pretty thouroughly before I get a game so I have a pretty good idea of what I am getting into. Most of the really overrated games, I have never played so it is difficult to build an opinion.

Can't agree with you on Halo - IMO easily one of the finest FPS games ever made.

I would have to say the first Fable game as my top contender - the Fable series in general in fact, but primarily the first one.

Also, Portal. I mean, Portal is fun. Easy, fairly mindless, almost no plot or anything to think about, and a nice chuckle every now and again. It's refreshing to have a FPS where you don't actually have to kill anything. On the other hand, once you've finished it once (which should take about 1.5 hours), you're done. No more puzzles to solve. The 'challenge' rooms add little. Does this deserve 9.5 scores? IMO, hell no.

Fallout 3.

Witcher 1 and 2 were fun games, with some neat moments - but I think they're a bit overhyped.

I have to agree to some extent.

I liked Witcher 1, beat the game twice.

Witcher 2 I pre-ordered in December, and it looks beautiful, and has an interesting story and characters, but I've only played the game about 10 hours.

I have trouble motivating myself to dive back into it. Something about the loot system feels a bit like a chore, and I hate the fact that enemies just stop chasing you if you step back a few feet. This makes the combat feel cheesy.

Morrowind for prob the same reason the op said Halo ce is that the people who the right age to play it refuse to move on thinking that no better game can be made. I think it was good game but is limited by when it came out (if it was remade/updated it would be amazing)

I wouldn't say the first Halo, but Halo 3 is definitely overrated.

GTA4. Fits the saying 'jack of all trades master of none' better than any other game I have played. There's no real emphasis on a convincing character; the story is a rehash of typical mafia/gangster stuff we've seen on TV for years; the writing in general is aimed at teenagers and blatantly so; the combat is some of the most clunky, unresponsive BS I've ever encountered.

The AI and traffic are a marvel of programming, the city is amazing and lifelike, but that's about all it has to offer.

Portal 1 & 2. They are good games but very short and too easy IMO.

Its a shooter and you're criticising it for its dialogue and voice acting

It was OTT sure but that was the whole point, look at the graphics. Obviously (see my avatar) I loved it.

I honestly don't care what genre it's supposed to be, there are characters and dialogue in the game and they were executed poorly.

It was mainly that one character, ClapTrap. His voice was excruciating to hear and the jokes were so horribly corny, I wanted to chuck my laptop out the window every time he said something.  Worst game I've ever played.

Don't mean to knock anyone else's opinion BTW, I'm sure some people enjoyed that game, but I hated this one with a vengeance. They should have had an optional mode, or some kind of mod that completely removes ClapTrap from the game.

Robots with country accents can be awesome, I'll take Primm Slim or Victor any day of the week over ClapTrap.

Maybe because you didn't play it when it first came out and before thousands of other games tried to copy its formula.. Play Bioshock and you'll see Half-life's influience.

I hate threads like this because it seems like a lot of people just like trashing on genuinly good games just because its the hip thing to do.

Mass Effect - It's a great story and has a great world built around it. But the gameplay, quite frankly, is ****e. There's also the fact that many environments in the game are often recycled, and the character animations are quite stiff. Thank goodness the incredible sequel improved upon all the things that were at fault here.

Gears of War - I only played the first one briefly, and never returned to it. I'm sure it's a good game, but I'm at a loss as to all the hype surrounding this game.

LA Noire - The noirish storyline is gripping and the mocap acting is top notch. But the gameplay is tedious and the lack of a true open world hurts it I think.

Shenmue - Remember how I said LA Noire was tedious? Take that and multiply it by ten and you get this. It's too bad, I was quite involved with Ryo Hazuki's story, and the fighting mechanics are quite good.

FInal Fantasy 7 - I do not get the love for this game. It's nothing compared to the far superior FF6.

I'm not surprised the whole point of GTA went over your head. Its meant to be satire with a serious spin.  I suppose you thought the radio commercials were serious too?
For every time someone bashes on GTA IV the more I find myself enjoy it lol.
