Hi, new to the board but have been reading for a while.  I had a quick question during act 3 after the justice quest and Anders is giving Hawke the whole "I told you you I would break your heart" conversation on a friendmance play is he actually breaking up with her or is he just warning her that something is about to go down.  I've played and beaten this game many times so there wouldn't be a spoiler issue to me.  I was just wondering because when I come back to the house Anders kicks my dog out of the bed. To sum it up first he is like I told you I would break your heart and then dog  no more room in the bed for you.  Any clarification would be appreicated!  Honestly I don't think he breaks up with her but I've read other things....

I figure it's him wishing he could confess to you that he lied and that he's about to do something terrible that he is certain will, in fact, break your heart... on account of the lying, and possibly guilt-tripping, and the "using you as a distraction" thing.

But no, he isn't breaking up with you. He's just trying to distance himself so you'll be less hurt when he ruins everything (in his mind.)

Trying to not to spoil anything if you've not beaten the game yet. He's basically foreshadowing that he's going to do something that you most likely are going to be upset with him about. Sort of like how Merrill says "If you stay with me everyone you care about will be hurt." or something like that. Except Anders is actually more fitting to his comment unlike Merrill's comment.

the more I replay Da2, the more I despise Anders....(spoilers)........................

my last playthrough I only used him once to take him to the Deep Roads to make Bethany a warden and refused to do any missions for him (missing out on exp, items, resources) and ____ him despite siding with the mages. I just hate that guy.

Your supporting arguement is convincing

I haven't done his romance but from what I have seen I would agree with this.

He's trying to distance himself and give you the freedom to do what you must later. Now it is your choice, but he will drastically affect the game and, your choice will affect your other companions. But, no he is not breaking up, in fact he can end up going off with Hawke in the end.

Image IPB sorry, I went off tangent and forgot the OP.

but uh to the OP:  Anders has a lot of guilt and either is angry or feels sorry for himself derived from having low self esteem (He doesn't think too highly of himself) Its quite common for someone who has low-self esteem to push people they love away.

Sorry, I have beaten the game multiple times. I am trying to make a "great" mage. It's just someone said something on another message board a while back and for some reason that got me to thinking about, "okay, if you are telling me you were going to break my heart then why the hell are you still in my hosue and why are you kicking my dog outta my bed?" I gave the same arguments that you have given about him wanting to make it easier for Hawke to "kill" him or whatever at the end of the game but I was just thinking about it and it was bugging me. Good to know that I wasn't the only one thinking the same thing. I really love the character (Anders) and really want him and my Hawke to have a semi happy ending. Can't wait for the new DLC!!!!

Thank you all!!!

You can get him to ... repent? He will still carry through w/ the action that "breaks your heart" but at least he will see the error of his ways. He'll even stay and fight no matter who you end up choosing to fight with.

Only if you full-rival him, and chose the right dialog durring his Justice quest. Otherwise he will not help you side with the templars ;p

There was another thread on here a while back that discussed the outcome if you full rivaled Anders, and forced him to side with the Templars at the end... sounded very depressing. I couldn't even bring myself to watch the YouTube links that showed it. Personally, I wish he could have remained the happy-go-lucky Anders from Awakening, but it wouldn't have given him or the ending much of a story, would it?

I loved the Awakening Anders too! I liked Justice aswell but /sigh I guess the messing of the two added alot a drama and well DA2 just would not be the same w/o them as they are... I would highly recomend going rival w/ Anders. It's alot of fun if your into the romance aspect of the game and I think it gives Anders alot of depth that you may not encounter viea the friendship route. XD

Did anyone else end up killing Anders themselves? I felt it was the right thing to do after he killed any people unfortunate enough to be in the Chantry Tower.

I did it once. I will never do it again.
1) I like Anders even though he is super obsessed with the mage issue.
2) He wants to die so that he doesn't have to deal with the aftermath.
3) I feel that he can be redeemed even after his act, so I'm not killing him ever again. Sebastian can shove it.
