If Quentin is from Starkhaven, as Gascard's note implies, isn't he a product of the Circle?

I'm just not sure that Starkhaven was some secret key to why they go insane. I think it's more likely just to a point like the death of Thrask. Writing. Starkhaven was the nearest Circle so any mages with a hint of "Not from Kirkwall" were either going to be from Fereldon or Starkhaven as Circle mages since they appear to be the closest Circles in relation to Kirkwall. The entire "insane" or "crazy" is also a part of writing but to be fair in a game it's hard to have every single character you kill having a great back story with unique justifications for their action. Starkhaven screamed almost more convenient to me with as many times as it was brought up. Granted we also just ran into how many random apostates anyway. But it is true that at least the ones with the most dialogue were mostly from Starkhaven.

Face Palm = Orsino though at the end of the game. I still hate that scene and always will.

My guess is that this is all a result of trying to augment their magical powers with hallucinogenic mushrooms, which they secretly hide in glasss vials labeled "magic shrooms" in the far back side of the pantry where nobody checks. Orsino then covered this all up so that Meredith wouldn't take away their magic shrooms. However, Orsino decided to horde all the magic shrooms to himself, forcing mages that were tripping the hell out to escape into the outside world to find more shrooms. That last scene where he turns into a harvester? He was just tripping out on shrooms.

Sadly that makes the most sense of the entire situation  :(

The only thing it seems to match is every single other mage have gone insane, even the one who scaped from ferelden.
If memory server well only 5 mages seems to be "sane":
The Half-breed ( tavinter by now.. (maybe nuts?)
You/beth ( beth is warden in all my runs, I like her so No she is not nuts.. hehe)( hawke is nuts) rofl
Alain( soon to ge nuts..?)
The one who is saved from templars (soon to be nuts?)
The son of the orlisian couple..( .. he is wierd lol nuts?)

I don't remember any other one who is not nuts.

Based on the note "A Reply from Starkhaven," written by First Enchanter Raddick, it seems that Gascard DuPuis was looking for Quentin in the Starkhaven Circle.

Isn't it also possible that Quentin has always been an apostate and after so many years, Gascard was simply turning over every leaf he possibly could?  It seems that marriage is uncommon in circles, so I almost lean towards Quentin being a free mage and Gascard just wondering if he hadn't been able to find his old mentor due to him finally being captured and sent to a circle.

I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that just about every mage who isn't a party member will be a lunatic though - and I'm not entirely sure the party members are entirely sane either

I do believe that circles like Kirkwall can make mages insane, but the death of a loved one can do it too.

Oh, cool, another "Chantry and the Circles are to blame for all the ills of all the mages" thread.

Yippee.

Its one of the reasons I wish they gave a third, harder to pull off, ending involving clean sweeping them both with help from the cities standing army.

What army? The guards are busy dealing with riots and stray abominations when the Last Straw goes down and aren't stupid enough to help Hawke seize power. The criminals are busy taking advantage of the chaos to loot places and have no reason to help Hawke. The nobles are probably having their houses guarded from looters and abominations, they are also probably too scared of Meredith to act against her.
