Because of sequels, isn't it impossible to give us a choice regarding the war?

Hawke's story ended with a choice between siding with the mages and the templars, and it's likely Hawke is either serving as Viscount for three years with support from Cullen (who may likely be the new Knight-Commander) or he's possibly leading the mages after his exodus from Kirkwall, given Anders' continued references to how Hawke is the leader the mages have been waiting for. The war between the mages and the templars seems to be near, with Varric describing the world on the brink of war, and the mages and templars seem posed to fight each other. Orlais seems to be where Dragon Age 3 will take place, given the Nexus Golem's comment about "the Stone beneath Orlais" and Bodhan's revelation that Sandal will go to the royal court. Since Orlais has six Circles and is the center of power for the Chantry of Andraste, it's likely the schism with the mages and the templars will be addressed. The only thing is that, considering sequels, won't it be impossible for the player to achieve victory for the templars or the mages without the decision influencing the sequels? People have a preference for either side, but I can't imagine the writers permitting the player to have a choice in deciding the outcome when it would mean that all future installments of Dragon Age would need to accomodate both choices - a world with free mages, and another world with the templars succeeding against the mages. Would the writers really permit the player to have the opportunity to decide who will win the war when it's unlikely they will accomodate both choices for future installments?

Like you said, I don't see them writing two separate paths that would lead to even more branches in subsequent sequels... That seems far more complicated than anything they seem willing to undertake. It's more likely that the next game(s) will handle the mage vs. templar stuff as a backdrop, and the main story will be focusing on whatever Flemeth has planned, the darkspawn, or something along those lines...

This is why they purposely made "Hawke" a rallying cry for mages regardless of what happened in Kirkwall.

Basically, what Icy Magebane said. DA3 will likely (hopefully) be like DA:O in that you will make several sweeping decisions about the fate of major groups, and then you will never directly see those groups again, except in cameos. I imagine all future games will be set in Qunari lands, or southern Rivain, or Tevinter, or beyond the Eluvian.

Another option, that may or may not be feasible, is to do a timeskip, have the models & gamestats of certain characters change based on your decisions, along with a few lines, but over all have it all be the same. So, let's say it's set in Antiva as the Qunari are making another expansionist push. Well, if you sided with the lolocaust Templars, then the government will have been partially replaced by Templars, the order will have a huge influence on the chantry, and the character who's bossing you around most will be Knight-Commander Zorro. If you sided with the mages, then many functions of the government will have been replaced by Mages, the new Circles will have a huge influence on the Chantry, and the character who's bossing you around most will be First Enchanter Zorro. However, considering some of the negative reaction to Hawkesexuality, I'm not sure how well this would go over.

I doubt the Templar/Mage war will be resolved in the next game. It's too useful a setting element for Bioware to dispose of so quickly.
