Jacob has settled his problems before the mission takes place. He's a highly professional man who doesn't like to let anyone in, and while he's friendly, he isn't nearly as open as the rest of your squad. He doesn't need to be helped. He doesn't need to use Shepard as an emotional crutch. Subsequently, he doesn't get a lot of character development. He stays the same throughout the game, which can turn a lot of players off. Personally, I loved that there was someone stable and sane on my crew, and if you ignore Femshep's dialog and the 'priiize' line, his romance isn't half bad. He's the only one minus Liara who ever asks how Shepard feels.
He's not everyone's cup of tea, and his weak build doesn't help much. But what one person finds boring another finds interesting.

i guess that shines a little light on , but the game trailer said fight for the lost not "fight for the guy, who can fight for himself", but I guess that's all there is to him.

Personally I couldn't care less what he's up to but I want all LIs to be well represented in ME3 to ensure that the story can make logical sense for most players. Explaining the absence of a comrade is easy, a LI... not so much.

Isn't there a Jacob-specifc thread that would happily answer your question? It's nice there. And it doesn't have as many shirtless-Jacob images as you'd think.
But in all seriousness, if you don't understand or like Jacob, I doubt I'll be able to convince you to join his fanbace. He's a very subtle character, and most people take that to be, as you said, "boring." Which is fine. He's either your thing, or he isn't.
Jacob's romance is distinct because he doesn't need rescuing. Thane, Garrus, Kaidan and Liara all look to Shepard to be their rock, but Jacob, conversely, is Shepard's rock. He's very interested in how she feels and how she's handling the suicide mission (and, well, the fact that she once died) and becomes a source of strength for Shepard. In a game brimming with characters begging for Shepard's help, Jacob's romance is something that I honestly appreciate.
So, in short, Jacob is a very stable character. You either love him for his stability, or you find it boring and hate it. Me, I hope to see him in ME3, because he's a cool guy who gets sold short far too often.

Yes, this! I agree with all of this. Jacob is so unshakable that he boarders on static, and a lot of people find that boring. But a lot of us love him for beign the one stable person that Shepard can rely on, and as a romance, it works so very, very well.CheeseEnchilada wrote...

okay i have an understanding and respect for him now, but it still seems like his character is misplaced, he would have been a spectacular character in ME1 or ME3, being stable and all. the thing that gets me ost is you probably have to jump his boner to find that out about easily or im just a douche...yeah im just a douche.ADLegend21 wrote...

Why is jacob worthy of being in ME3, because in ME2 there was no depth to him AT ALL, and thats pratically what the game was about, character driven stories that take you through the entire game, but when ever i stumbled upon jacobs it's like not being able to go up a steep hill in the mako all over again

Yeah, it was nice to have someone on the crew who wasn't borderline insane.
But I have to disagree on the build; I find his skillset to be very useful indeed, especially in the early game on high difficulties. He has a nearly ideal skillset for fighting Krogan and Vorcha, and his three non-loyalty skills don't require any unlocks. You can get him upgraded to squad incendiary ammo very early if you concentrate on it, which is a huge boon to classes besides soldiers and vanguards.

Jacob said...
Hey Shepard, I told you I was all stable and forgettable and boring and whatnot, and I'd settled my problems, but I just found out my Daddy might be on a tropical island in a throne. Oh, and he made all of his crew retarded, uses the men for target practice and rapes the women for S&Gs.
I wouldn't tell you this, as I'm so composed and professional and obviously know how to solve my own problems, but... Oh nevermind, I'm not.
Did I mention "The Priiize"?
(sorry, thread was disproportionately pro-Jacob, I'm just keeping the balance)
I do find him pretty boring, and an @ss at times*, but it's not like I'd send him down the shaft for it.
*Jacob: Hey Tali, make sure to see your beloved old rebuilt ship's NEW AI, TROLOLOL!
*Jacob: Hey Garrus, you're a cuttle-bone! Yeah! Like the cartiledge spine of a cuttlefish! Even though you're really avian/reptilian! Problem?

The things that shock me the most about him is that he's not the stereotypical blackman (like cole from gearsof war) ,but he's such a goddamn bore (and when he some how gets interesting it's like a totally different person that spawned from no where, like on his loyalty missions.)! I expected better from bioware! ( his voice actor sucks, and his teeth annoy me, and having him on your team is just doesn't help the love factor) My shephard has been the only black guy on the norandy for a long time, and when i saw jacob i was actually kinda happy thinking we could have some kind of kinship, but talking to him is such a bore! Please jacob fans if you truly are a fan of him, help me understand this guy or i might get him killed for kicks and giggles.
Honestly?
He was too.. grounded.
The man had a level head on him. No massive outbursts of emotion clouding his judgement. No old grudges getting in the way sending him chasing after people throughout the galaxy and to hell with the mission, no vices, nothing.
Just straight, and to the point. His distinct lack of character flaws made him boring.

Exactly. It's like having Jesus on your team without the Superpowers or the Beard. Boooooring.

This goes against everything people expect because they want characters to spill their guts to them.
