Thane Dialog:
Jacob: I've heard impressive stories, Krios. Sounds like you'll be an asset to the team. That is, if you're comfortable having an assassin watch your back.
Thane: I've accepted a contract. My arm is Shepard's.
Jacob: Uh-huh. Don't know about you, but I'm loyal to more than my next paycheck.
Shepard: Blah blah blah blah.
Jacob: Aye, aye, sir.
*Thane talks with EDI then Leaves*
Shepard: He may surprise you- (Neutral choice)
Jacob: Yeah. And he may not.
Jacob may have had run ins with assassins in his past as a soldier in the Alliance or even in Cerberus, he sees assassins as just precise mercenaries. And he just met the guy with a reputation of killing alot of people. Can you blame him for being cautious for bringing him on-board? Also Thane seems understanding and instead of making it an issue ignores it and goes about his business, he was being the "Bigger man" in that conversation.
Tali Dialog:
Jacob: Cerberus saw footage of you in action, Tali'zorah. We're looking forward to having you on the team. Your engineering expertise will really benefit the mission.
Tali: I don't know who you are, but Cerberus threatened the security of the Migrant Fleet. Don't make nice.
Shepard: Blah blah blah I'm a tool sometimes.
Jacob: I wasn't part of what happened to the Migrant Fleet, but I understand your distrust. I hope we can get past that as we work together.
Tali: I assumed that you were undercover, Shepard. Maybe even planning to blow Cerberus up. If that's the case, I'll loan you a grenade. Otherwise, I'm here for you. Not for them.
Shepard: Blah blah blah
Tali: Remember, Shepard, these people thought enslaving Thorian creepers and Rachni was a good idea. I'll be in engineering.
Jacob: Don't forget to introduce yourself to EDI the ship's new Artificial Intelligence
*Tali glare attack*
Jacob tried to be civil, and validate Tali's feelings towards Cerberus. But she wasn't in the mood to "Make nice" and the golden rule, don't say to others what you don't want them to say to you. Insult Cerberus I'll insult the Quarians tic for tat.
And Hate towards Jacob for being emtional about Garrus is just silly. (I'm too lazy to type out the conversation)
TL:DR
If you're going to hate on Jacob hate on him for something else than how he interacts ONCE to crew members coming on-board the Normandy.

I also enjoyed his reaction to the crew. Yeah, he wasn't nice to my eventual LI- but there are good reasons to be wary of an assassin, any assassin, until you get to know them. He kept an ear out for people ('Tali's going to freak when she hears this' about Legion, the short discussion about Garrus in surgery) and he seems to genuinely care about what he's doing and why he's there- you have characters who don't (sup Jack) and sometimes the blunt but tactful views he holds are refreshing.

Jacob post-indoctrination in ME3:
"NOOOO! PRIIIZE! We must have it, we must! *horrific ugly teeth grin* Yes, Priiize, we'll crush their filthy little necks! Yes, we'll take all the time we can get!"
You'll see.

Jacob does have a character flaw. He bottles up his emotions and refuses to talk about his feelings, which if you pester him about on his romance path, he breaks up with you.
This goes against everything people expect because they want characters to spill their guts to them.
Flaw? That may be his one redeeming quality. He's strong/independent and doesn't need Shepard to hold him.
The problem I have with him is that, he's just not a man's man. As an ex-Alliance soldier turned Cerberus operative, you think he'd be the one person with which Shepard can relate to more than anyone else. But nope. This is a conversation with Jacob:
Jacob: Commander, can I help you with something?
Shepard: I'm more interested in just talking for a bit.
Jacob: *short but uncomfortable pause* ... sounds good. Have to say, I like what I've seen so far. We may just get this thing done. Informal, huh? Alright, your ship, your call.....
Shepard: ??? ... relax Jacob, just wanna know what makes you tick.
Jacob: Ha! If you were anyone else from here I'd be all like, "whaaa?" But no, you're something different so, I'll give you a shot. (Gee, thanks!)
Shepard: you seem awfully quick to trust me.
Jacob: yeah man, we're soliders. We know what's up. I should get back to my duties. Nice talking to you.
Shepard: ... what just happened???
So yeah, if there's one word I would NOT use to describe Jacob, it's "normal." Especially not when the "crazy" ones like Jack display a far more genuine human side than he ever does.

I didn't dislike Jacob or anything, but I never knew what the hell he was talking about in his conversations with the commander. I don't get the "...what just happened"-type of thoughts a lot, but Jacob's conversations certainly left me scratching my head.
But it's possible that my irritation with the forced flirting distracted me and thus temporarily impaired my comprehension skills. I understood him perfectly whenever their conversations were not prefaced by "I'm more interested in just talking for a bit."

It's refreshing to have a crew member who can take care of himself.
I'm romancing Jacob this round, and I must say, I'm surprised at how much I'm (err...my femShep is) enjoying it. He opens up in surprising ways. I like it.

Tali, Jack, and Miranda are in need of Shepard's healing sexual organ in order to become happy, emotionally healthy, stable people. Thane and Garrus don't quite need that, possibly because they are men and this is the ME2 interpretation of gender strengths, but still give an 'only Shepard could make me happier' vibe.
Jacob doesn't need the healing sexual organ to be a happy person, or to find new happiness.

Does he really? I've been trying to figure that out for some time now and am left with nothing. No clue what he's fighting for, no clue he aspires to/wants in the future, no clue what's made him the man he is today.
With the exception of Kasumi/Zaeed who we can't interract with, I can answer those questions for every other person on the ship. Even our resident AI squadmate.

I thought his deal was similar to Garrus's. He really wants to get the bad guys and hates red tape. And he kind of has daddy issues.

Heh, you sound like you've already made up your mind about him. But I'll contribute:
Jacob has settled his problems before the mission takes place. He's a highly professional man who doesn't like to let anyone in, and while he's friendly, he isn't nearly as open as the rest of your squad. He doesn't need to be helped. He doesn't need to use Shepard as an emotional crutch. Subsequently, he doesn't get a lot of character development. He stays the same throughout the game, which can turn a lot of players off. Personally, I loved that there was someone stable and sane on my crew, and if you ignore Femshep's dialog and the 'priiize' line, his romance isn't half bad. He's the only one minus Liara who ever asks how Shepard feels.
He's not everyone's cup of tea, and his weak build doesn't help much. But what one person finds boring another finds interesting.
Yeah, it was nice to have someone on the crew who wasn't borderline insane.
But I have to disagree on the build; I find his skillset to be very useful indeed, especially in the early game on high difficulties. He has a nearly ideal skillset for fighting Krogan and Vorcha, and his three non-loyalty skills don't require any unlocks. You can get him upgraded to squad incendiary ammo very early if you concentrate on it, which is a huge boon to classes besides soldiers and vanguards.
i was a vanguard so he wasn't that useful, and when ever i told him to switch to a pistol he'd go back to the ****ing shotgun at long range!
Interesting. I never had that problem. He'd switch back to the shotgun if I got killed and had to load a previous save, however.
Even on Soldiers on Vanguards though, getting up leveled up to Squad Incendiary is very nice early. As a soldier or Vanguard, I'd still evolve it to Inferno ammo. This way, my entire team still has incendiary ammo, and my incendiary ammo is a bit better.
The reason I like him as a companion for casters against Krogan and Vorcha is for the squad incendiary ammo, which disables health regeneration, and his pull ability. Pull is a perfect ability for disabling charging Krogan. Though a caster class Shepard might have an equally as good CC ability, it's always better to use your squad powers before your own when you can to preserve the cooldowns. Jacob doesn't have any active powers besides Pull, so his cooldowns are almost always available for a timely application of Pull.

Officially. So is everyone else on the ship. Even Jack is doing that, but for her its basically sport. Jacob's reason is about as good as "just 'cause."
Dean_the_Young wrote...

The problem I see here is, again, where does he fit in? The freedom to do *something* without these threats. But we don't know what that is, exactly, because we don't know him.
Liara asks what a Jacob-mance femshep is fighting for, "drinks and dancing with Jacob?" Since when has Jacob been about drinks and dancing, other than that 1 line that such a Shepard wouldn't even get? Bioware's own writers haven't even figured him out.

We can suppose, based on vague details of his background. But, that may all be completely wrong.
