I killed the hobgoblins before i talked to Joia and found no ring. Now she gives me the quest but there is no hobgoblins to kill. Is there no way to complete this quest now? Thanks

Are you sure you killed the right hobgoblins? There is more than one group on that road.

Use the console to create the ring. Since you allready killed the hobgoblins, it's not cheating. The code is: CLUAConsole:CreateItem("RINGJOIA").

You have to go into your Baldur's Gate .ini file in your game folder and enter the line "Debug Mode=1" before the console works.
However, Joia's ring is on one of the hobgoblins before you get to the eastern end of the road, whether you have taken her quest or not. You either have not killed all the hobgoblins to the north of the Friendly Arms, or there is a corpse bag/remains that is hidden behind some terrain feature like a rock or tree or wall that you missed, or you found a flamedance ring and sold it without knowing what it was.

The file is called Baldur.ini and if you are playing pure BG1 (rather than BGT or Tutu), you should instead add the line "Cheats=1".
Either way, the extra line goes underneath [Program Options].

Sorry for not replying earlier. Anyway heres the deal. I keep all my savegames (hundreds) so i loaded the save where i just killed that hobgoblin pack. The ring was there, hidden behind a tree so i couldnt see it until i hovered my corser over it, giving it a blue edge.
BUT when i load my latest savegame (ive come to chapter 3) and i fast travel back to the Inn, and go the exact same spot where i found the ring in a backpack hidden behind a tree texture, there was no drop ! Do items disapear from ground after some time? This is the only explanation
About the console - I tried everything youve said. Adding "Cheats=1" and "Debug Mode=1" to [Program Options] and [Game Options] but it still doesnt work. I have 4 CD (boxset) version of the game, maybe console doesnt work in this edition of the game?

Items on the ground only last for a few days at most. The console works on your system, after setting the line did you exit BG altogether, get back in and then do the CTRL+TAB then enter the line flamedance showed you earlier?

My install requires me to press "CTRL+Space" to open the console.

I hardly use it, you must be right Belgarath - a post up above said ctrl + tab is where I got my statement from.

You could just use Gatekeeper to edit your save game and add the item. Available at
www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index_editors.php
Or
For the standard game these are the steps you need to enable the console(assuming this from your install comments). Also, if you have the 4-in-1 install make sure you add the TotSC patch otherwise your game will eventually run out of variables and become unplayable. Available at
www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index_misc.php
Baldur.ini needs editing. The game should not be running when you do this.
The compatability version of Baldur.ini needs editing too if it exists (installed to program files under Vista or Windows 7). Click the circled icon to get to it.

Cheats=1 needs to be in game options for BG1.
Holding CTRL then pressing Tab opens and closes the console.

Just to clarify ctrl+space is the BG2 command to open the console - if you are running with Tutu or BGT you will use the BG2 engine and therefore that command ctrl+tab is the original BG1 command (although some people always had trouble in getting this to work in BG1).

I'm just laughing because this quest is so inconsequential to the game...
