Greetings,

I installed mass effect about a week ago and the game still crashes like 30 mins into the game always at the same part( where you are landing at eden prime right at the beggining) with a black screen and locking up my computer to the point that not even ctrl alt del works, therefore I have to manually restart it. I have tried playing with the settings and no luck. I have literally looked everywhere online and it seems like this is a common problem for many people yet many of the posts were not helpful so here I am posting for some help!! I have the following....

-Downloaded the game off Steam.
-Windows Vista 64bit SP2
-4gb RAM
-Intel core 2 Duo 3.00ghz
-Nvidia 9800GT (used to have the latest driver but i read a post here saying that i should use 257.21 instead since the older drivers are better for these older games)
-IDT high definition audio codec
-Power supply is 750W ( dont remember full stats but it should be good)
-DirectX 11, I did download and installed directX 9.0c but for some reason directX 11 still shows.

I also have the latest mass effect patch and cant think of anything else. I dont think it could be a hardware issue since my system seems pretty capable or running ME but....I am out of ideas, please help me out on this one. I've had the game for over a week and havent been able to play past the first 30 mins or so. The odd thing is that it always crashes at the same cutscene( landing at eden prime). Thanks in advance, hopefully I will be able to enjoy this game :D

I just tried the nvidia 258.96 driver and still crashed about 20 min into the game while talking to the captain at the very beginning of the game( I said 20 min because I actually left the game running). At this point i really don't know what to do. There goes $20.... =/

oh by the way, I check the ME configuration Utility, then summary and for some reason where it says "driver version" is blank unlike some pictures I saw earlier from some users here and it said the name of the drive but mine is blank for some reason...Could that be it?.....Or could it be that my sound card driver is too new for the game?( since i have the latest sound driver)... :pinched: I really wanted to play this game lol. I hope someone can aid me with a solution.

Crashing in the same spot is normally indicative of a corrupt file in the installation. Try verifying your Steam cache intergrity.
Also, are you running the game as admin, or with UAC disabled, and are you also running it in XP compatibility mode?

Okay an update.. this time the game crashes at the beggining right after I finished talking to the captain before meeting Anderson. The screen didnt go black this time, it just froze there as I was unable to move and it locked up my PC..

I did verify the cache integrity and it said at the end that " two files could not be verified" then I did it three more times and it verified 100% without problems saying successfully validated. Yes, I also tried to run it as admin, right off the masseffect.exe in the binaries folder. Only thing i haven't tried yet is the compatibility mode, though you mentioned "XP compatibility mode" but I have vista professional 64bit, is that what you meant? If so that is the only thing I have not tried yet. Is that the little box that you have to check in the compatibility tab? I'm honestly running out of ideas.... for the meantime I will do the compatibility mode Bogsnot. Also is the nvidia driver I'm currently using ok for the game (258.96 driver)? Do you think the sound card driver could be a problem since im using the latest one? Or maybe directX11? I really doubt it's an overheating problem because my PS and hardware should be more than enough to run this game flawlessly. Thanks in advance.

258.96 is about the latest driver you can use reliably with the game.
ME1 and ME2 specifrically require DirectX 9.0c, and wont work with other revisions as they are not backwards compatible enough. Download and install DX9 from microsfts website, or from download.com. Vista is capable of running both versions side by side without any problems.
XP compatability is that little box you should tick, it gets vista to emulate Windows XP for runnign certain programs, as there are programs that will only run under PX, and not that well uiunder Vista or Win7.

I didn't know you could run multiple versions of DirectX. I have DX11 on my gaming system and ME1 works fine. Maybe it's because, at one time, my GTX470 had 9.0c installed? Don't know. Thought it always had DX11 on it. Memory fails me.

I borrow this thread :)

I have a realy strange problem:
Right now Im on Therum, just saved after speaking with Liara for the
first time.  Later when I was going to load the game  I got over 900
experience points?????
Tried to save on time more after finished
the geths and the geth with the laser and hacking two computers. And
after loading I got more experience points again :(

I know that you can cheat with a glitch using the laser, but this is before using the laser!

So anybody else here who have had the same problem? I dont want this, bevause I think it is cheating.

@Baramon: DX9.0c gets installed when you install the game, although the Steam version isnt reliable and sometimes doesnt install DX9 if it detects DX 10 or 11.

@Peterrrr: Do not hijack threads with a problem that is unrelated to the error as posted by the thread originator.

Ok i will try the DX9.0C but from i understand you cannot install an older version of DX on top of a newer one so how can I do that? Will it automatically overwrite DX11? And running ME in XP compatibility wont crash my OS since I have vista?

Vista and Win7 are capable of running DX9 and DX10/11 side by side without complaint. Download it from here (CNet.com) to get the full package and it should install ok.

Vista and Wni7 have compatability mode because MS realised that the way that Vista/Win7 works is different to how XP works, and they woiuld have to provide some form of suport for legacy aplpications. Others have been able to run ME in compatability mode without hassle, and it does tend to bethe more stable way to run it.

I too can confirm that I have hit problems with trying to run both the Mass Effect, Steam versions of the games on XP SP3. Did almost all the above things and put my Nvidia drivers back to version 266.58. Going to try 258.96 version next (thanks for that tip Bogsnot1) and if that does not work there is a beta driver just out, version 275.50. So I will try that too. This is really odd as the games ran fine before. Also noticed other Unreal 3 based games are also crashing in the same way, eg Alien Breed. Is it the consensus that it is really the video drivers and not some lame Windows update that is causing this? I know Windows updates have caused endless me "fun" in the past

When i tried to download directX from http://download.cnet...tml?tag=mncol;1 its asking me the location where I want to put the extracted files?? What do they mean by that??. Also I'm going to try it running on on XP compatibility mode to see what happens. Thanks Bogsnot1, I will keep you posted. Also from what you can tell from my PC stats, they should be okay for this game right?

Ok I just tried the XP compatibility mode and still crashed in the first cut scene AFTER i landed at eden prime. So the only thing I can think off is a driver problem, or probably the DirectX because i doubt its a hardware problem. Can't think of anything else, this sucks.. I wish this game was just another install/play type of game but lack of support for a game that is not even THAT old is a real bad thing. Any ideas/configurations?

Hi NialskylineR35
I already tried the comparability modes in XP and the latest beta drivers from Nvidia. At least you made it as far as Eden Prime, I cant even get off the Normandy. Certainly a good idea to try installing DirectX again. I think I will try that myself. I will post here on how I get on ;)

LOL I know the feeling...but im sick from watching the intro for like the 15th time. I tried the link that Bogsnot gave me but when I try to install it it asks me for the location where I want to put the extracted files and i dont know what to choose there since it gives me the option to browse all the directories in my pc. Also I guess installing DirectX 9 will overwrite directX11? Since apparently I have 11 right now. It sucks that most people have this problem and its so complex that theres no direct fixes for it..

I can save you the bother, it doesn't work, but if you want to try it anyway, here is what you do. I take it you have already downloaded the DirectX install. After you click on the icon you are not really installing it as such, only de-archiving it, so you can direct it to "install" into any directory you like. After it's done, navigate to the directory you picked and look for an icon called DXSETUP. Click on this and then it will install for real automatically. Dont worry about over writing a newer version of DirectX, the install will only update those files it needs to. Perhaps you will have better luck than me.

Ok Geraldine, I have it a shot and failed. Tried disabling UAC and installing the DirectX install and nothing. After 20-25 min of playing my game just locks my PC and freezes it. Something is not letting this game run properly......how annoying. I really don't know what else to do since i really wanted to play this game again before ME2. I guess im doomed with the ME comic =/. So I have tried everything and half the ME players come across this problem apparently but no one really knows whats causing it. Could it be something with the dual core? I doubt my PC is overheating. Impossible.

Dual core? I dont think that could be the problem. If it was I would never have got the game to run before, but again if you want to try it have a look at this link http://masolution.bl...multi-core.html

I have also noticed that when I open the game's configuration utility, under the summary tab, the part where it says Driver version for the video card is BLANK!!!!!!! so apparently the driver version is not displayed...that is weird. Is there a away to properly install a driver or they just overwrite? I had the newest nvidia driver then downloaded 258.96 from the link bogsnot gave me and installed it but how come it doesnt show there? Could that be the problem?

Well, installing multiple drivers can cause problems all of its own. When a proper solution presents itself I intend to clear out all my old installs of drivers and start afresh with a new one, if that ends up being the solution. But time will tell, I just hope ME1 does not end up like Medieval Total War. That game was rendered unplayable once newer video drivers came out. :(

So yea I have tried everything and I dont have anymore hope about what to do.........just one last option.... My laptop. Stats are a follows

-Windows 7 64 bit
-AMD turion II P520 Dual core 2.30 GHz
-4GB ram
-ATI mobility Radeon HD 4200 series.

Stat-wise should be enough to run ME.....What do you guys think? can someone please confirm before i go through the hassle of installing in windows 7? I wish this game ran like butter on my desktop but those random crashes locking up my PC make it unplayable...this really sucks =/.

Being that it is a laptop and the 4200 series is a bit underpowered for the game, then your chances are 50-50 at best. In the How to post Gorath has listed the specs to run the game and it does list the 4200 as below specs. Laptops sometimes run great and others tank big time. If you can figure out the issue with your other rig do so, but don't count on the laptop doing well. If it does run it will probably be a bit slow and you will have to watch the heat.

If the game runs around 25-30 minutes then locks it almost sounds like a heat issue. You may want to try a heat monitoring program and see if you are getting a vid card that is about to cook itself due to a fan issue or some such stupid nonsense.

As another note it is possible to save after you gain control of Shepard and before you talk to the captain, so you can skip the intro and shorten the time played to get to that scene. So you may want to save just before going to the captain then go and see if it makes any difference.

Yea I wouldnt got to the laptop just yet unless I really have to. My desktop should be more than enough to run this game, the weird thing is the computer lock down. I dont think it could be a heating issue since my card alone has a fan, and I have another two fans for my CPU and my PS seems high enough to power everything. Nevertheless where can I get a program to monitor heating issues what what should i look out for? I was thinking it could be more of a video card driver issue I tried the newest one and now Im currently running 258.96 nvidia and still the same thing. Any settings in particular ? It seems like A LOT of people come across this issue even when owning a machine competent enough to run this game but no one really knows how to fix it. Also just noting that when I go to the games config utility, under video driver, its completely blank and doesnt show the driver's version. Isnt that weird?

I have heard good things about speedfan, but never personally used it.  My msi hardware has a gpu temp and fps monitor that I run in games....

Speedfan from cnet is here.....

download.cnet.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html

Just because you have fans, don't mean they are working or that the heatsinks aren't full of dust either.  When is the last time you cleaned your system and also when have you last checked to see if your fans are actually turning by visual inspection.

I am not saying the problem is heat, but one of the syptoms is locking up and crashes after running for a time, when you have higher graphics loads such as extended cutscenes.  It may not be it but it has to be checked to see and eliminated if possible.
