I protected Isabella, and I'd do it again. The Arishock had what he came for, there was no way I was going to give over someone who'd fought at my side and, albeit a little slower than I'd hoped, did the right thing in the end. Furthermore, I liked Isabella. She does have more morals than people give her credit for. She could have kept Merrill's precious item that she'd one in cards, but she didn't. She gave it back with a bit of sage advice. She also, if you hook up with Merrill, didn't have to threaten a male Hawke's most treasured items. She did. I doubt she'd have actually done it, but it does show that she actually cares about the people surrounding her.
Sure, when the chips were down, she chose to save her own skin rather than bring the book back to the Qunari. But that's a tall order to ask of anyone when your life is on the line.
EDIT: This situation does reveal a bit of hypocrisy when it comes to the Arishock. He refused to turn over the elf fugitives because they'd accepted the Qun and thus they fell under Qunari jurisdiction. When it came to Isabella, he wanted the book
and the thief, so that she could be punished under Qunari law. But she's not a Qunari, so should she be afforded the same respect the Arishock demanded for the elven fugitives?
