Model: Acer Aspire 5336 (laptop)

Processor: Intel Celeron CPU,  900 @ 2.20 GHz

RAM: 3 GB

OS: Windows 7, 64-bit

Video: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express

Audio: Intel High Definition Audio HDMI

DirectX: Version released 04/2011

Primary issue is two-fold. Initial problem was that configuration tool would crash in the information gathering stage. I obtained game client patch 1.02, and faced the same issue; I ran program as administrator, and configuration was successful, but would then fail to launch game. I went to EA support website which, after recommending "Run as Admin," suggested running the executable independently of the launcher from the Binaries folder. I attempted this, client crashed; went back and ran the .exe as admin and it failed again.

I have tried various iterations of these steps, including uninstallation, reinstallation, reinstallation as admin, and so forth, none of which have gotten me into the game. Game was purchased when it first came out for PC, so returning it is not an option (last PC was too old to run the game, so I just held out until I could get a new one that was capable of running it).

I'm currently sitting on a fresh install. Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

That laptop isn't SUPPOSED to be useful for games, and it is not. Any self- respecting game expects an actual graphics card from an actual 3D game company such as AMD or nVIDIA, and Intel doesn't even make a CARD, let alone anything game-capable.  Top that off with a non-standard, Celeron abortion of a processor, and that isn't a PC, it's a NetBook.

Top-of-the-line gaming machine it is not, but it should meet the minimum system requirements - even if the game has to be run on lower-than-optimal graphics settings. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion runs perfectly on this machine, as does World of Warcraft; both, in fact, play better on this than on my last computer which had an nVIDIA card, but still refused to run Mass Effect.

WoW doesn't count, and Oblivion is five years old now. You do not have a graphics device worth the name, nor a decent central processor.

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD

Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 310, 520, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9100, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1650 XT or better (X1300, X1300 Pro, *X1550*, HD 2400, HD 3100, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4350, HD 4550, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements)

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

So, graphics card is the end-all-be-all benchmark for being able to play PC games anymore? There's no way around that? Because my last computer, bought at the same time as my copy of Oblivion when the game released was below min-spec for it; was the nVIDIA card seriously the only thing that let me play that game? That just doesn't seem logical that the running of a game hinges solely on one piece of hardware.

Intel is the illogical fly in the ointment. They failed at making a gaming card the only time they tried, a dozen years ago, and never tried wholeheartedly the next nine years. Three years ago, they started up a graphics development program, but canceled it rather than be as badly embarrassed as before, when it gained little traction.

I had the exact same problem. And my rig is way above the minumum specs with its dual 580's and I7 processor, so how about trying to help the guy instead of bashing his rig?

@Nim: My problem solved itself when updating to v1.02 and running it as administrator and compability mode windows xp service pack 3. Just right click the shortcut and choose advanced to set this up after you updated.

Acer Aspire 5732Z: Win 7 premium 64,
Intel Pentium T4300 dual 2.1 Ghz,
Intel GMA 4500m,
4gigs RAM

doesnt run ME 1 either: ME2 never tried since i want to play 1 first. Problem i encounter is a familiar one to some: General Protection Fault. DA:O it plays DA2 it runs perfectly. Fable 3 what is a new game it runs perfect on medium settings. so why doesn't ME1. yes i know laptops aren't the best gaming rigs there are, not in the position to buy a new rig since i got booted outta me job.
If any one has a fix, solution or loophole to circumvent the GPF i would appreciate it.

took me more then a YEAR to even get a retail copy for ME1 for pc since it isnt available here anymore cept for 360 or *ahem* steam. so im kinda dissapointed if i have to wait again for a new rig to play it

Intel graphics chips are not supported and there is no guarentee they will work with any game. I don't know of a game that officially supports them. Newness is not really important in games unless they run on the eact same engine and graphical requirements so saying "but this game works" means nothing

Integrated graphics chipsets are not actual video cards. The main issue that can arise is that they may not be able to support games as they do not have their own RAM, but rather use the RAM of the PC to emulate video RAM. This can cause lag in games, crashing, or the game may not run. Also, as most games now are very graphically intense, Intel graphics chipsets are not supported by most games because they do not have the graphical processing power to run the game, even at the lowest settings.
