I've never played BG (jumped on with Bioware at NWN and never seemed to get around to BG) and have recently noticed that both BG1 and BG2 are availible on GOG.com.
Now, I'm very, very impatient and if something doesn't interest me immediately I tend to get bored; but, I keep hearing wonderful things about BG, with BG2 being mentioned in particular. So my question is if I should start at the start, or jump straight in to BG2?
Where to start?

Start at the ..emm..start. The BG series is in fact one continous story and should be played that way, certainly if it's your first time. I do advise using either Baldur's Gate Trilogy or Tutu. Both mods will allow you to play Bg1 using the BG2 engine.

Bring patience. It's an old school game, that means it's a lot slower than what you are used to. It is also very, very complicated and more difficult than modern games.

So the game actually is worth investing time into? And I should start at the start?
I really don't understand the mods you mentioned, Flamedance. I had a quick search but they didn't answer my questions. What do I need to do to use them if I download the game from GOG.com? Also, are they really worth the bother?
Thanks for your help, guys.

Yes, it is. It's subjective, of course, but the Baldur's Gate series is among the best pc gaming has to offer. Notice however, that it's far more challenging than NWN. It's very easy to die and if you just charge headlong into everything, you'll be in for a lot of reloading. Take your time to get used to the magic system and don't be afraid to retreat if enemiies are too strong for you.
Yes, Tutu and BGT are very much worth it. Nearly every veteran uses one of them. Like i said, both of them allow you to play BG1 using the much improved BG2 engine. Furthermore, you get to uses the class kits from BG@ in BG1.
Here are detailed instructions for installing Tutu: http://forums.gibber...?showtopic=8122
For BGT i advise this: http://www.shsforums...roject-bwp-v90/ Just follow the installation instruction. It's largely automated. The mod will download and install everything for you. When prompted to choose an install, choose: "recommended version".
