Talking to your companions is one of the best things to do in any BioWare game. I could spend hours doing it and it's no different in ME.  But ME probably handles companion interacting the worst.

What I mean is that I when I'm busy risking my damn life to save humanity's sorry asses form the Collectors, I want to talk to my team whenever the hell I want.  No Miranda you are not that busy that you can't say anything. I don't care about how awkward you are Jacob give me an update!  And Garrus how long are you doing your callibrations for?  It's sad consdiering that other BioWare games are nearly perfect for this. So how do you want to do this? Which game did it the best?

Mass Effect Style:
  • Only can talk in the Normandy
  • Can't talk everytime you want
  • Unique companion Quests
  • Romance
Knights of the Old Republic Style:
  • Talk whenever and wherever you want
  • Have some unique companion quests
  • Romance
Knights of the Old Republic 2 Style: (Yes I know it's Obisidian)
  • Talk whenever and wherever you want
  • Romance
  • Influence system where your actions please or ****** of your companions where you can engage in more dialogue depending on your influence.
Dragon Age Style:
  • Talk whenever and wherever you want but talking is limitied outside of camp
  • Romance
  • Approval system which is basically influence
  • Gift giving
Or a combination?

Cinematic scripting makes it impossible, essentially, for conversations to be independent of the cinematic direction, which means they're tied to location. You have to keep in mind that if you want the KoTOR or DA:O design, you give up any and all cinematic interaction with the environment and radically restrict the camera to 1-2 views that constantly recycle.
