Hey everyone.

Basically I'm doing a project for school and I'm making Alistair's splintmail armour and writing a short piece on changing armour throughout history. Thing is I need to pass the splintmail off as some kind of historical armour that people actually wore... I don't want to change the armour because I'll be using it as cosplay later this year and it's effort and money to just make two sets .

Does anyone know where the designers took the inspiration for splint mail from? Anyone know any armour that vaguely resembles it?

The best I've found is some Byzantine stuff. ><

Thanks!

To me, Alistair's chestpiece visually resembles lamellar armor more than a coat of plates, which would be the closest IRL chest armor made with a splint mail technique that I'm aware of. Some parts of it remind me a bit of Japanese lamellar armor, too.

The difference is that Alistair's plates don't appear to be laced to each other; one assumes they're attached to a layer of leather or cloth, since the armor is called splint mail.
