I never understood this. I played DA1 from pretty much nearly almost the same exact week it came out, since then I have been hooked on the game spending 2-7 dollars for DLC without thinking of it. But Witcher 2 promises free DLC, and I think is better gameplay then DA2(which clearly was not a sequal) so is Witcher 2 doing this to attract more people to it's game?

What's curious about this whole feud with these two games which have moral story in their games. Is when the Witcher 2 came out it was devloped on the engine of "Bioware" I bet they didn't think a few years from now one of their Games (Witcher 2) would rival Bioware's game.

Dragon Age has had lot's of free DLC. Both games came bundled with some and there were extras for pre orders. "Better gameplay" is kind of irrelevent to this conversation isn't it? And who knows why they are giving it away free depends what it is. If it's just a bunch of weapons and bits and bobs like that i see why a whole 3 hour quest DLC? Well if they give that away i guess Polish people just don't like making money. Last i checked Bioware/EA isn't Oxfam and doesn't need to give people free stuff if they don't want to.

It's a business move for them. Valve does the same thing. They both believe by giving away free dlc it will keep their customers happy and draw in more people. No ad imo is more powerful then word of mouth.

What dlc is free Moondoggie? If your talking about preorder bonuses imo that doesn't count.  So far CDProjekt has gave an enjoyable sidequest and a barbershop. They also said if they ever charge for dlc they want it to be expansions and not small scale dlc.

CD Projeckt just don't gives a crap... just look at how many patchs/new content they putted into TW1, including textures modifications...

they are already getting a ****load of cash from GOG.com, so those DLCs are just irrelevant for them.

Valve have Steam they don't even need to make a profit from their games anymore so they can definately afford to give away DLC

According to Gabe when they give stuff for free they attract new people and when they have sales Steam makes a lot if not more money on games then when at full price.

Not counting pre order bonuses DAO came bundled with the Shale DLC which was an extra companion plus sidequest.

DA2 came with The Black Emporium that Dog thing and a bunch of weapons and usable Tomes

Well see that's what i was getting at if they don't charge for significant DLC i'd call them mad for not taking up a chance to make money for their buisiness.

Not sure how free DLC would draw in new customers but then that's just me DLC never makes me buy a game it's something i'll look at when i have a game buy most games have really crappy DLC anyways so i never look at it as a sales point.

Shale is what $12-$14?
Black Emporium was only given to people who preordered early other wise they have to pay.
The tomes and weapons were preorder bonuses from certain retailers or came with the signature edition or some contest. But the real content such as Shale require money as of now unless you buy the Ultimate Edition of DAO.

Mass Effect 2 also has a lot of dlc and none of it is free. Something as simple as an appearance pack cost what $2 or $3 (not sure) which people would have gladly paid to finally get Garrus not looking like crap through out the game.

Well duh ofcourse not. But aslong as we the consumers get to save money I don't see the problem.

They probably figure everyone is just going to pirate it anyways so they might as well not even bother charging.

Yeah, except they all bought it afterwards, right?

Had CD Projekt released the game on consoles like they had planned they would've likely sold twice as many copies.  It's good they've wisened up by deciding to port the game to the 360.  Hopefully when they see just how much more profitable it is to develop for consoles they'll look at PC's and abandon the worthless platform.

CD Projekt is a talented company.  They deserve legitimate consumers as a fanbase.

No, The Stone Prisoner comes free with each new copy of DA:O.

Black Emporium was only given to people who preordered early other wise they have to pay.

No, The Black Emporium comes free with each new copy of DA:II.

That is incorrect.

Mass Effect 2 also has a lot of dlc and none of it is free.

Incorrect, each new copy of ME2 comes with the Cerberus Network DLC (which includes Zaeed).

At least try to get your facts straight. It's not as though the information is hard to come by...

Still with the anti PC trolling, Bussomjack? You need to get some new material. Well, atleast you gave up that silly "I'm ninja that can parry bullets with my sword" shtick.

You can't get Shale for free anymore, besides the fact that you'd be hard pressed to find a new copy, the card expired over a year ago. And you keep on saying new copy, you don't have to get a new copy of TW2 to get the free DLC. You just get it.

Witcher 2 is selling in part because of good word of mouth, and giving away DLC's will probably increase this. It also keeps people interested in the company until they release a new game. It's a smart investment, considering DLC's don't cost much to develop.

I also think it really has a lot to do with the company ethic. TW1 was essentially just a massive Polish version of all of those LotR total conversion mod projects you see spring up around nearly every RPG that gets released. I don't so much think of the extra content & fixes to the Witcher as being DLC as much as I think of them as Developer-created professional grade mods.

There were some BioWare projects like this back in the day. Iirc many mods for BG2 were made with help from BioWare writers.

Yeah, I think it was Gaider in particular who released some improved difficulty mods for ToB along with Ascension mod. Can't remember what else he released.

Eh, moot point considering the DAO Ultimate edition is $20 on the PC with all the DLC.  And how would you know expired cards are not honored?  Have you actually tried or just assuming?

“Hello, Bioware, look at your RPG, now back to Witcher 2, now back at your RPG, now back to Witcher 2. Sadly, it isn’t Witcher 2, but if you stopped designing your games with launch-day DLC to nickel-and-dime your customers, it could generate word-of-mouth like it's Witcher 2. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a computer designing the RPG that your RPG could play like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s free DLC that adds that thing you love. Look again, the DLC is now diamonds. Anything is possible when your DLC creates customer loyalty and not annoyance. I’m on a horse.”

It's probably cheaper to produce and release free DLC than to run a TV ad campaign and more effective in reaching the audience that would enjoy the game.
