You can't get Shale for free anymore, besides the fact that you'd be hard pressed to find a new copy, the card expired over a year ago. And you keep on saying new copy, you don't have to get a new copy of TW2 to get the free DLC. You just get it.

Eh, moot point considering the DAO Ultimate edition is $20 on the PC with all the DLC.  And how would you know expired cards are not honored?  Have you actually tried or just assuming?

When I bought DA:O - a year after release, I was able to get Shale for free even the deal had supposedly expired.  Posted Image

As for why CDProjeckt does give away free DLC, they are trying to appease a small gaming communty with PC gamers that usually mod games for themselves anyways.   Add in the positive PR they get as well and well they can easily do it

When their games like Witcher 2 reach consoles, they won't have that option - Microsoft and Sony won't allow it.

It's probably cheaper to produce and release free DLC than to run a TV ad campaign and more effective in reaching the audience that would enjoy the game.

Cheaper yes, More effective? Well it depends what you are looking to be effective at. Selling copies of the game? Not really. Gaining larger totals of DLC downloads? For sure. The people who have the game will get the free DLC but nobody will buy the game on the back of somebody saying "Hey this game has free DLC i must buy it!"  For all they know it could be "horse armor DLC" if you catch my drift.

An Ad campaign reaches audiences in a short ammount of time who may not know about the game or heard about it from a friend but hasn't seen the game.

Word of mouth is fine but unreliable. I've been told a game is awesome several times to find out it's terrible. If it's worked for CD Projeckt well we'll see the sales numbers so far it looks to be selling to only the core audience that bought the first game without a new audience being bought in.

Yes, you can; the offer is still in effect.

besides the fact that you'd be hard pressed to find a new copy

It took me about 5 seconds to find a new copy on Amazon and one on Steam. I would hardly call that "hard pressed".

you don't have to get a new copy of TW2 to get the free DLC

Yes, but that's just because CDPR couldn't get their game registration servers working. The original intention was that you got the Troll Trouble DLC when you registered your game, so it would only have been available with a new copy of the game. But since they couldn't get their game registration to work, they had to give it out with a patch instead. It's all right there on their webpage.

Are you even trying? It took me one minute on Google to disprove your entire post.

DLC used to be free to most games just a few years ago. I'm not sure who started the trend of charging for it. I remember being disappointed with Bioware for going that route in NWN1, but I never downloaded their "premium modules" since players were making better ones for free and all the feedback on that DLC said they were only slightly better than the OC...which licked monkey balls.

I don't expect boatloads of free dlc from them, but if they can match what they did with the first game, I'd be impressed. You got two free adventures that were about 1-2 hrs long.

If I were them, I'd focus on doling out more weapons, crafting recipes, etc as well. That type of content is no doubt far cheaper to make than story dlc, and I feel it still adds to the game ( to combat, anyway). The weaponry and armor dlc for ME2 is a good example. But I feel it should have been free.

Also, I want challenge rooms, Arkham Asylum style. :wizard:

Then it was either a used copy or he should have contacted EA support and would have likely got it sorted for free since if the code didn't work in a new copy then it's an error that can be fixed.

Couple of weeks passed after patch 1.2.. No news of the upcoming patch and the all DLCs that were released thus far were all minor DLCs. Only one story related DLC was released which is the Troll trouble. I bet it was reap out from the original game and later advertised as a Day 1 DLC.

Sorry for being a little negative, but perhaps their free DLCs are marketing gimmick and short-lived. At least this is how i'm beginning to feel so.

I'm sure well get more dlc's, but consider what they are taking on:

-patch 1.3, and I'd bet there will be more needed after that.
-dlc
-Xbox port
-PS3 port
-side projects. I know they have something else going. Many rumors about this.

This is why I wanted them to lease the console port to someone else.

Love it!  Recognise the advert you took that from, and love how you changed it.

I agree. They pretty much have their hands full atm.
2 patches after such a short time is pretty good in my book. While they've been good with the patching so far, I don't expect them to be all MMO about it and release an update on a weekly basis.
1.3 will be released when it's ready, don't want a patch to cause more problems than it solves eh?;)
Atm I wouldn't exactly call the current problems gamebreaking ones more like minor annoyances.
Besides I'd rather have them working on an expansion than DLC.
I generally find DLC to be too low-budget and too short even if they can be good.
Expansions will allow for quite a lot more.

How can Witcher 2 NOT afford to give away dlc free... after the horrible horrible horrible horrible instalation problems people have.

No kidding first it was trying to figure out what to do with disc 2, how to get it on your comp .... oh well guess you need to copy all those files over to your hard drive...

then it was the compulsary patching errors that came up....then it was this and that, oh another patch...

And then here is a fun game, guess WHAT patch you need to install!

I swear I felt like I earned dlc after finally getting the retail dvd version to work.

P.S also the voice acting sucks, absolutely no cadance or character , just lines read off a page.

You cannot count Black Emporium as a dlc guys.... its a shop. Thats it, its a shop that utilises mods people made for DA:O basically. I want a change face in Origins, somebody made a Mod, I want to respec, somebody made a respecc potion, I want to have loads of crafting materials, somebody made a Mod. Bioware then took all these ideas, put them into a shop, and believe me, it is nothing more than a shop, added in some free below-par gear, and called it a DLC....

(That was to people calling BE a mod, I cba to quote)

It's not hard to figure out how it works. There is a budget for development and one for after the release. Sales of the game have to cover both. It's just returning to a practice which was common before the invention of the term DLC. Patches often came with additional content. It was just a way to apologize for the bugs and keep the customers happy until the next product.

X3:TC is a game which also does that. The devs are a small company and they love their game. Many of the people who work there came from their modding community. These guys make the patches and new content in their spare time, because the company is too small to fund it. The modding community often helps them and some mods get official status and become part of the patches.

Dragon Age has had lot's of free DLC. Both games came bundled with some and there were extras for pre orders.

During ye olde good old times, most of the stuff now viewed and celebrated as " free DLC" used to be integral part of the goddamned product. Content created during the original development push of any given game, then cut apart and sold or offered as a seperate button-smashing-awesome-free-bonus-DLC-feature-coolness-of-don't-buy-used-games-you-stupid- a**h**e - experience has always felt like a bit of a scam.

Lolwut.

Buddy patches go in numerical order, so if you can't tell whcih ones goes first between 1.1 and 1.2, then that's your own fault buddy.

As for the VA, beats the crap out of DA:O's imho.

Well the free DLC is a good way of letting them add content to their unfinished game in my opinion.
