mass effect 2 took the number one spot on IGN's top 100 modern games

also in the top 10 was portal 2 which I believe is an excellent game.
the original Bio Shock came in at number two.
overall I think it's pretty good list but there's definitely some games in there that I would not have chosen.

Mass Effect 2 should have been farther down the list, and before the original Mass Effect.

What is their definition of 'modern games'? 1990 forward? 2000 forward?
If it's 2000 forward then it's a borderline insult to have Mass Effect 2 as the first, as much as I love the game.

2005-2011
Agreed with IGN's countdown, for the most part. Especially the original Bioshock as #2. That game was a work of art.

It's this generation of consoles, so they're only going back to when the 360 was released.

I totally expected it to be #1, IGN loves Mass Effect with a passion.
IGN are worse than tali-mancers with Mass Effect 2, they talk about it like it's the greatest game ever created and that there isn't a single flaw about anything. I am not surprised they put ME2 as #1.
Edit: I realise I will most likely get flamed for this, it's just my opinion however, agree or not, do what you wish. I'm not hating on Mass Effect 2 because I like Mass Effect 2, just disliking how IGN idolises it without acknowledging it's problems and flaws etc.

Though Mass Effect had more tried and true "RPG elements", Mass Effect 2 packed some serious punch – incredible vistas [1], a refined combat system [2] and a storyline focused on character development in a way that we’ve never seen in a videogame before [3]. Sure, the big bad robots called the Reapers are out there and ready to destroy everything, but the best part of Mass Effect 2 was learning about your teammates [4]. The Normandy crew wasn’t comprised of the walking stereotypes you see in so many other titles [5], you got to know each individual over the course of the game and felt some sort of emotion toward them. Maybe you loved Tali or hated Grunt, but either way you had an opinion [6].
[1] The only thing I can actualy agree on here without any strings attached.
[2] That was nowhere near close to polished shooter mechanics other games of the time had.
[3] Yeah... "characters are the story" or if you preffer "there are characters, no story"... hard to notice.
[4] It wasn't the best part... it was the only part.
[5] Orly? No brutish tanks, no miss perfect with hiden complexes, no cute unexperienced maidens, no compleate psychopaths that make little sense past that they are crazy? No excentric genius proffesors? Because those things are quite common in vidya games.
[6] NNNNNGH, nope... I had no opinion, because as a human being I am perfectly capable of not forming an opinion about something I experience.
I'm a fan of the series, I just didn't had nearly as much fun with ME2 as I had with Portal 2 or Red Dead Redemption... I also belive that the ranking was composed by chipmunks after lobotomy, because they listed Mario Galaxy above Portal 2... and that is a proof monkeys and brain surgery were involved.

Let me guess. All of you are going to complain about this. And you call yourselves fans of the series.
Would it be BSN if we didn't complain about every honor they win? I'm waiting for the inevitable RPG element discussion.

Of course. We all know that Mass Effect 2 was the worst game ever made. It only won more GOTY awards than any other game because EA bribed the hundred+ reviewers.

We all know the worst game ever made goes to Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing

Mass Effect 2 was likely not even the best game of 2010. ME2 is a decent game but it doesn't deserve to be compared to games like Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Okami, Mirror's Edge, Fallout 3, Gears of War (a superior third person shooter) and especially the first Mass Effect and many other games. It probably doesn't even deserve to be on that list at all. Even the uninspired Super Mario Galaxy is probably better.
It really is an insult to videogame fans.

"Although the packaging of Big Rigs states that the main objective of the game is to race their Big Rig to safety in order to deliver illegal cargo being carried by the vessel, while avoiding the local police force, in actuality, there are no police in the game, and no such objectives are presented within the game itself. Much of the game instead centers on the player racing their truck against fellow drivers to the finish line; however, the player's computer-controlled opponent vehicles have no AI and never move from the starting position. In addition, due to a lack of collision detection, there are no obstacles to negotiate within the game, and the laws of physics can be violated frequently."

You just shot us several million light-years and hit a target the size of a pinhead, that's good. I drove in reverse to achieve the speed of light cubed and stopped on the dime, that's amazing.

The sole fact that you are a fanboy doesn't necesairly give you the right to insult others who have diffrent views... because as IGN wisely told us - "either way you had an opinion." And that opinion is yours.
Short, you are annoying as ****.
