What is a "real rpg"?

For me it's all about the story and how YOU!, the character, is able to change it. As far as I remember, In Fallout 3 you only had 3 choice that really changed the story, the last one ending the story so you couldn't see the outcome.

In mass effect the whole story lead up to ME3, and if you Fornicated so bad you'll end up losing the war. That's a rpg for me, the ability to shape the story for the better or the worst. not following characters in a corridor and deciding which weapon to use in a prewritten storyline (Yes I'm talking about you Final Fantasy 13. You gave me the 13 most dreadfull hours of my life!)

Really? I didnt know it was labeled a Hybrid until now! .

Now I can see why some would think Fallout 3 can get boring.. as much as I love Fallout and the elder scrolls series for that matter (and I have the same problem with MOST openw orld sandbox-esque games) is that I never finish the story because I do get bored a lot of the times through.  I eventually finish them months later, but its because i'm TRYING to.

That said enjoyment Polka, really depends on the what the person enjoys.  Some games like Fallout I can finish (For instance I zerged through 3 several times, love it.  New Vegas...eh, not as much) same with some Openw orld games (Beat san andreas many many times, as I did with Saints row 1 and 2, GTA IV... still haven't gotten more than 80% done and same with the expansions unfortunately, still play em though, mostly for sh*ts and giggles).

Reason I play ME2 so much (and to that extent ME1) is because I love the story and characters and the gameplay is fun enough to keep me going through many...many playthroughs.  In fact I would say I dont think i've played any game my whole life near as much as I've played ME1 or ME2... Save maybe the FInal Fantasy series...and thats only because of quantity

I think in terms of RPG:

Witcher 2>Mass Effect 2

However in terms of the better game,

Mass Effect 2 > Witcher 2


Quit thinking that every game that's not a pure RPG is horrible and bad. It's almost as bad as my friends saying that Uncharted is bad because it's on the PS3 not the Xbox. It's a matter of taste, morons.

 Hmm. Top ten, yes, sure. Number one? Woa there. I think Bioshock deserves that spot more. And any of the two Portal games, these were works of art. The top ten in general is decent, however, save for the fact that the stinking piece of canon defilement that is known in some unholy circles as Fallout 3 is in it. At least put the superior New Vegas, you tossers. But no, it's apprently buggy, when 80% of the bugs came from the engine and were present as far back as Morrowind and Oblivion, but I guess it's Bethesda, their bugs are ok because of all the immershun. 

Also, Dragon Age is number 89, and yet Oblivion is a ''immersive and deep'' enough game to be in the top 20? You guys are sure you didn't mix the names up?

Bah, this is IGN we are talking about, after all. Their views on what makes an good game rather differ from mine, to put it midly.

I think in terms of RPG:

Although TBH it's more like W2 > ME2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> basically every other modern AAA WRPG. But I think they are probably soon to be joined by Skyrim, Deus Ex 3, and Mass Effect 3.

That said enjoyment Polka, really depends on the what the person enjoys. 

I understand that it is based on opinion but some games are obviously better then others in my opinion and I think some games are simply superior then others.

IGN are worse than tali-mancers with Mass Effect 2, they talk about it like it's the greatest game ever created and that there isn't a single flaw about anything. I am not surprised they put ME2 as #1.

Edit: I realise I will most likely get flamed for this, it's just my opinion however, agree or not, do what you wish. I'm not hating on Mass Effect 2 because I like Mass Effect 2, just disliking how IGN idolises it without acknowledging it's problems and flaws etc.

Why you´ll get flamed? because is true? IGN make the worst reviews I ever seen.

ME1 had less focus on shooting i.e  Combat? .....We must have played a vastly different game then....Because I seem to recall a majority of the game I was fighting/shooting/biotic-ing or tech mining something....

hmm...strange.  The ME1 I played had just as much combat as ME2 did...*shrug*

Thats true to an extent... Halo and its sequels are always hailed as one of the greatest series of all time... Personally I cant stand halo. I enjoyed the original but not as much as...hell Smackdown vs Raw.   That said there will be games that are popular/fun/whatever buzzword you can think of, that for whatever reason, some may just not like it.  

Cant really account for everyones tastes.

I think their top 10 is pretty good save for F3 instead of New Vegas.

Knew ME2 would be (deservedly) #1 based on their previous lists but am pleasantly surprised with Bioshock at #2.

Role playing game. You play a role. RPG is not about donjon-crawling, corpse looting and experience points. And a gender-less, voice-less, face-less role-less character is consider a role.

Commander shepard, Male Infiltrator, born spacer and famous for stopping the skylian blitz on Elysium, this is a role. Therefore Mass Effect is a lot more RPG than Fallout. Fallout is an action-adventure sandbox fps with RPG features.

And the best RPG ever made?
-Life. You play your role and must level up every year, gain new powers by learning and training and gain money by working. Too bad there's no quicksave or continue.

Considering the amount of dislikes for the IGN video on youtube and the general unsatisfaction toward Mass Effect 2 being awarded top #1 modern game, I'd suspect there are more than three users.

Ah, Call of Duty. It always amazes me that that game gets high marks from anyone, considering that the single-player is an afterthought and the multiplayer sucks. I mean, seriously, TF2 is like 10x better and it's free now.
