Got some more, or came up with some more.

RF = Remove Fear
PfG = Protection from Good (Mod spell, I think its from Divine Remix.)
PfG10 = Protection from Good 10' Radius (Same as above.)
IM = Impregnable Mind (Also a mod spell.)
SotA = Shield of the Archon (I didn't see it up there, but its a level 7 Cleric spell.)
ISoM = Impervious Santity of Mind (Also, a mod spell.)
HW = Holy Word (level 7 Cleric Spell)
GR = Greater Restoration (Level 7 Cleric Spell)
BoH = Bag of Holding
RoW = Ring of Wizardry

I think thats all I got for now. Sorry if some of them are already on the list.

Thank you, my good friend, they're in.

Have you considered a career as an editor or proofreader?

I used BTE for Black Talon Elite in my last reload challenge post.

Two thoughts.

1) It is customary in military and government  correspondence to spell out an acronym the first time it's used with the abbreviation in parenthesis behind it. Thereafter, you just use the abbreviation. That helps the reader if they need to refer back to the fist usage to refresh their memory.

2) Also, maybe at some point the list could be categorized, e.g. weapons, armor, rings, spells, scrolls etc...

Are you volunteering to do the work, CKT? ;)

I'll put BTE in the list.

Not really, my major in college is Nursing, so if I were to change my major, I would either change it to English, or History.

I wish I had another abbreviation to add onto the list. Then again I think I do.

AtBH = Amelyssan The Blackhearted (This one is a joke you don't have to put it on the list if you don't want to.)

One more real abbreviation.

SS = Spell Sequencer.

Okay, thanks, Sapphire, Spell Sequencer is in, although I have added a note that I think it is a very bad abbreviation because it is easily confused with Stoneskin, Spellstrike, Set Snare, and possibly even Symbol:Stun.

OOC: Out of Character (Humanoid Taiphoon used it in a discussion, and I couldn't find in in your list, but found out by using urbandictionary.com).

Okay, I put in OOC. Sorry it took so long - life has kind of moved on for me, and I haven't been checking here very much.

I hope people are finding the list helpful. I'll probably find it useful for myself the next time I come back to BG and need to review the jargon.

Thanks a lot for this list Belgarath. It will help a lot. Sometimes I just give up trying to understand what a poster is on about.

So what does MTH stand for ;)

You might want to transfer the actual list to the initial post for more convenient reference... and categorize out the spells from the rest of the lingo.

On that note:
OP - Original Poster

Also some more I've been coming across:
DRM- Digital Rights Management

Okay, I put in OP and DRM. By your request, I have moved the list to the initial post. It never occurred to me before your suggestion that I could do that.

Someone else suggested a set of categorized lists: weapons, spells, etc. That's for someone else to work on if they want. My basic idea was to make an alphabetical list that was as thorough and all-inclusive as I could get it. I just stop in from time to time and note whether anyone wants some more abbreviations added.

So far it's been pretty reliable for me, because I keep forgetting the jargon, and I've had to look up stuff on my own list during my last few visits to the forums. I did it for myself as much as for everybody else.

I must be bored... so I'm offering a categorized version (with a few edits as well)... I'll delete my list from this post if it's used in the main post... damn, is it long... I'm figuring that the most relevant of the abbreviations/ acronyms one finds in the no-reload section or elsewhere regard game mechanics and BG mods used, so I've kept those lists near the start. Spells and magic references are the most extensive so I put that list at the end (though I think I got some HLA's and class abilities in there by accident). It seems a number of the ABV's could be placed in multiple categories, so I put those in both lists with "see also" references to both. Some things I didn't know myself, so I looked up, but hopefully it's got a good categorization system setup. If you do use it though, now you'll have to organize all new submissions accordingly... Organization demons unite!
:devil:

EDIT: It's in already, so I'm deleting my version so as to avoid thread clutter...  Didn't take more than a few hours though. The hard work of collecting it all had already been done, so I just went line by line organizing (and most were spells anyway).

Actually, someone who doesn't know what an abbrevation stands for, won't know what category it belongs to, unless the context of the post it's used in makes it clear. Keeping it all in one alfabetical list is more user-friendly therefore, to my opinion, just like a dictionary is easier for use by having all words in one list, instead of being divided into subjects.

Okay, I put Bhyraen's lists in the initial post. It's won't hurt to have it, and CKT (Charlestonian Knight Templar) had also requested a categorization.

Thank you, Bhyraen, for doing all that hard work. I know it takes a huge amount of time, from when I put together the alphabetical list. I spent roughly an 8-hour work day on it. (We gamers are a crazy, crazy bunch, aren't we?) Eingefügtes Bild

I saw a few that you came up with that I didn't have in the main list, so I added those.

August 4, 2012:

Added "ROF" for "rate of fire", which apparently some new players use as a generality from other games, not yet understanding that BG uses "APR", "atacks per round".

Oh, sorry, @Biotic_Warlock, I didn't see you there two months ago. Yep, it was intended to be a comprehensive guide for dealing with acronym overloads here on these forums. Often, I still need to look up stuff on my own guide.

Back in the days I played Baldur's Gate and have recently taken it up again. So many things have happened since and it has been more than 10 years, so I must admit I am a little rusty on the jargon and have just found your list (almost four years later, ha ha) and would like to thank you for your great work, @BelgarathMTH

And thanks to all the other people who has contributed as well.

I for one dislike the use of abbreviations without an explanation and so many people use them without care for their readers.

Hear hear! Let us do that, folks!  :D

Might you add these as well?

TSC - Tales of the Sword Coast (have seen this several places)

SoA might also mean Shadows of Amn depending on the context

SoD - Siege of Dragonspear

I remember learning that "rule" (about always explaining what an acronym meant the first time it was used) in English class. My teacher would dock me if I used an acronym without explaining it 1st usage.

I usually try to spell out things 1st time as the above suggests, but there's a few I use just constantly so don't bother:

SoA - for me, I always mean Shadows of Amn. I will just spell out Shield of Archons rather than use SoA like some people, in part so people always know what I mean with SoA

TotSC - Tales of the Sword Coast - This gets quite repetitive to spell out, which is why I use this acronymn. In a single post may have to use it several times.

SoD - I have used this to mean Siege of Dragonspear - I think I should explain 1st use though, because some people don't even know what Siege of Dragonspear is, much less what SoD means.

ToB - Throne of Bhaal expansion

Spell Acronymns - I don't like acronyms for spells - I think a post is far more readable spelled out. Abbreviations, on the other hand I think work just fine (Melf's for Melf's acid arrow, skellies for animate dead, etc.) I do use MMM for Melf's Minute Meteors but try to spell it out 1st use.

Certain acronyms that are spelled out in the Baldur's Gate game manual should not have to be spelled out. In particular, NPC for non-player character or PC for player character are defined in the manual. If you don't know those, then read the manual and come back. : )
