Want armored skirts and flashy anime glitter style gameplay? DA2 is that way ->

Liara wore half-skirt armor in LotSB...guess that was still too glittery and anime-ish for Mass Effect right?

Uh, that's not a skirt. That's a coat.

http://xbox360.ign.c...?page=mediaFull

You are splitting hairs.

A duck is a duck, not a goose.
:D

Except I'm calling a mallard a duck, and its being argued that its a goose. "That's a coat"...okay...so then allow girls the option to wear "coat" armor like Liara does. Will calling it a coat satisfy your need for everything to be overly manly?

Nope, its fine as it is.  Let the squaddies have their own looks however.

Right. Because allowing gamers a plethora of customization options depending on his/her desire for how their character should look is so horrible.

If your femshep gets to wear a skirt it will forever soil Mass Effect!!! THE HORROR!!!

Not to stop the argument, and I support skirts in general (though NOT as armor), but that's nothing like a skirt.
That is a jacket/coat. It is cool, but it is not a skirt.

Carry on.

Except it is what I said, and you are wrong. Sorry.

Carry on.

Dude. It's a freaking coat. You wear a coat over your shoulders and put your arms through the armholes, and it doesn't restrict movement especially in the design used for Liara.

You wear a skirt over your legs, not your back, arms and shoulders.

It is not what you said, it is a completely different kind of clothing article altogether.

More like it costs, and I'm glad that Bioware cared enough to put in character customization.  But should they spend more resources on something that isn't going to be used and won't add to gameplay?

If Femshep will be more "girly" (in MAGICAL PIECE pink, jprg, sparkle style) it will be disaster, end of the world.
Shoot me plz!

Why shoot you. I give you hug or a high five, depends which you prefer.

FemShep just needs some proper animation, no skirts. She´s a soldier not "some tourist on vacation".

Just please PLEASE don't use the Lady Hawke walk/run animation. *shudder*Image IPB

Seriously though, I enjoy ancient history and I think that having something practical in the leg armor pieces that would mimic a "skirt" (and for ManShep, a kilt or roman sporran / cingulum militare) wouldn't be so bad if done right.

But, I'd rather have Bioware focus on other areas of game development first, before exploring such a venture. :bandit:

Why even wear armor? Let's all put faith in our shields... the enemy will be confused by our nudity!

Strategically placed body piercings of course.

From a feminist point of view, I feel that there are two points here.

On the one hand, by having a female in a strong role, you can show that women can perform just as well as men in military roles.
On the other hand, the role of a soldier is pur sang a male-defined role. Changing the definition of that role, making it not gender-neutral but non-gendered, or even a female-defined interpretation of the role of warrior instead of a male-defined one, would be a huge step in the development of women as equals to men.

Plus, dressing up is fun. And I say that as a straight guy.

I have to type that I'm a tad confused, do you mean roles in contemporary Infantry, or military in-general?

As for the N7 Alliance Program(s), I see no gender problems, IMHO.

Military in general. Can a woman function in military? Obviously, she can. But, say, the equipment is mass-produced, according to certain standards, say, 6 feet tall, broad shoulders, no hips, etc. The standard is set by men, for men, and women are the exception. In the same way, the role in how a soldier has to ACT, is a certain way, also set by men, for men. So, a woman in such a position is expected to act as a man, not as a woman. In other words, the role might be gender-neutral, because it can be fulfilled by both a man and a woman, but it's nog non-gendered, because the content of the rule, how one should behave, is clearly male. Ya dig? ;)

If not piercings, then something else. We can finally have an in game excuse for why Shep has that limp when he runs. :pinched:

Behavior seems a trivial matter, and how an individual acts only should be a problem when it could risk the matters at hand.

Psychological factors of service or not on the front lines should also be irrelevant, especially in Shepard's experience, IMHO at least; as long as the involved individuals carry out their duties and tasks assigned to them.

I'd guess the difference in our contemporary understandings, is how gender roles could be defined in the future compared to our present understandings.

I don't think the fans are to blame for that.  I mean, have you seen the backlash Other M got?  I think it was entirely the creator of Samus' work, that 'changed' her.

The way you say that makes it sound as if strength is an exclusively masculine quality and that feminine characteristics are the opposite of strength.

I wasn't aware "feminine" meant being utterly subserviant to a man, having a glass-fragile pshyche, depending utterly on men to tell you what to do, when & how, disturbing 'daddy' issues... just to a name a scant few... all of which describe the most recent incarnation of Samus.

People weren't balking at her appearance or (god forbid) her absurd teeny voice... but the fact she behaves as a whipped, obediant slave and servant to a man ... this, a woman who has defeated countless evils and armies in the galaxy... perhaps the most powerful warrior / mercenary / soldier in the metroid universe... and she behaves in the way some twisted men fantasize their women to behave.... namely being 100% utterly obediant and subserviant.

Play the most recent Metroid game and you'll actually understand. The writers / game designers all but raped the Samus character (yes... I just used that word, as that's how it seemed to me when I played it... She was not the strong minded, independant, determined, free willed, focused woman she should have been... she behaved more like a broken sex slave).

EDIT: and now I'm way off topic so I'll shut up... sorry but that damnable game and their damned designers really pissed me off <_<

Truth. I was pissed when I heard about Other M after just knowing about Samus from Smash Bros. Then I played Super Metroid and am working on Metroid Prime, and now I really know why people are pissed. (So yeah, on topic, no skirts plz.)
