I just installed Genesis and now every time I import an ME1 character it goes straight to the Genesis story. Is this supposed to happen? I already played the first game and don't need to make all those decisions again, I simply bought Genesis for the future when ME3 comes out...

You play Genesis even when you import a ME1 character; but it goes straight making all the important decisions you made in ME1, except for who you chose as human Counselor. This last decision isn't saved in the save file, due to a bug.
And, in my opinion, Genesis is crap. I uninstalled it after the first time I used it: it completely ruins the intro.

So what about all the side missions? Does my ME1 playthrough data for those get wiped out?

No. When you import a ME1 save, all you did there is imported correctly. Genesis only affects the intro, in this case.
