Ive played MANY Bioware RPGS and this game on normal is by far the hardest.
Is it something I'm doing or not doing?
Thanks for all responses.

I honestly don't know what's up my tanks get hammered if they have more than one enemy on them.
My setup is Sten, Alistair, Morrigan and my char (mage), even with 2 tanks my group gets killed fairly quickly. I also issue seperate attacks for each one of my chars. I pause play.

Crowd control helps a lot. If your having trouble with ranged enemies like archers try to get out of line of sight. Maybe Micro managing more will help.
Also try to mention what your group is and what platform your playing.

Many people get upset at this kind of response, but it's true.Leather_Rebel90 wrote...
It's honestly not hard at all. Just learn to set up tactics and make sure you have a Tank and bring even Wynne along to heal on the tougher bosses (Dragons).
Combat in this game is in no way intended to be handled by just rushing in at the first sight of enemies, never using pause, and never setting up tactics (though I micromanage too much sometimes to make them useful for me).
Once you learn how to manage your individual characters in battle, you will be suprised at how quickly you manage to take down that next ogre or demon.

Pay attention to what tactics you set your characters to.
If all else fails buy 495 elfroot and 495 flasks and cheese your way thru fights.

This. Although I've just left it on Easy my second time around, it's really easy....and I like the fighting that way (and I can take different companions and not worry so much about party balance...I like their dialogues with each other).nisallik wrote...
I had a few difficulties on normal my first playthrough, but finding it a breeze on my second time through.
And I'm not a big fan of the tactics slots. I have a few programmed, but I treat all battles separately and my companions end up doing something I don't want (such as one better suited to go ahead and die in a certain battle using my last health poultice). So, I don't use them a lot.
Something that may help you: don't rush into battles. I got through the entire ending battles without using any armies at all (only my 3 peeps and me). Here's how: station your companions somewhere away from the enemies. Then let someone run up ONLY close enough to get the attention of the closest enemies (you can also let your mage tag one of them with something to get their attention). Then lead them to your little ambush (use traps if you know how). Pick them off a little at a time and don't go for more till your health/stamina/abilities are back up. It takes longer, sure, but I had my entire armies for the final showdown. That was purty nice.

I have been micromanaging, CCIng when I can and using tanks to gather aggro but somehow they just burn right through me.
Someone else I forgot to mention: Pause every half a second. Really tough fights will feel like you're making some stop-motion movie that you never get to see the finished version of.

More CC mages = more survivability.

First time I'm actually alive and still unbeated for the whole run, so far, is my 3rd, in Nightmare, after half in Normal and a full run in Hard. (all with same char, much better developed too after the half normal run, a 2hander warrior)

This is an extreme case. Hmm yup the only solution left.

Take a look at the map on this page. It might help you in terms of going to areas more suited for your skill level. Realize that monsters might be harder than you are prepared for, so you may need to come back (that's what the Missing Manual I just read says!).
I went to and beat Denerim first, so the rest of the game seems like a cakewalk now. Haha. Mistaaaaaaake!

My guess is that you just have no clue as to how you use your mages properly. I suggest you try to herd enemies (preferably outside LoS, disallow free movement for team), then use Cone of Cold followed by Virulent Walking Bomb on a weak enemy in the middle of the pack. Stand clear, kill target, watch carnage, reap benefits. Other CC spells like Sleep (does not work v. undead) and Mass Paralyzis is very handy as well. Divide and conquer. With two mages you should certainly grab the entire Hex-line which will completely neuter melee bosses and speed up kill rate a great deal.
