I don't think for one moment that they would let ME3 go soap-opera with Shep.

Although to be fair that was the other team. ME3 guys actually can write stuff. Although I doubt they're going to have Shep start crying now.

lol =) I like DA2 and think that my FemHawkes are great but that's a different thread. Keeping it on ME3, hmmm... I think that they will handle it in a good way, meaning that it will probably be optional to let shep let the guard down for a little while.

Also, to suggest that all women's brain work in a specific way that is different from all men's brains is completely off the mark. The neurological range within the species is vast, and an idea of "typical male brain" and "typical female brain" is something that authors of books like "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" use to justify their crap theories.

So you're saying biology doesn't play a part in people's reactions?

Testosterone and Estrogen say "Hello".

Yeah, Jacob's stock went up 1000% when I became aware of that exchange and his "back off and quit trying to fix me" dialogue.

I don't get it, aren't you supporting men opening up and crying?

Then you support Jacob bottling it up?

Okay, we all know Shepard is a bad ass and the epitome of a mans man... Do you want to see Shepard's more emotional side in ME3? Perhaps even seeing him shed a tear? We really haven't seen him vulnerable or breakdown as often... he deals with so much and he obviously needs to express his emotions... I think it can progress his character even further and will give the player a more satisfying experience...To understand Shepard fully, we need to see a whole range of his emotions. However we consistently see a few of them...Does Shepard get sad? Angry? Depressed?... What do you guys think? Any ideas? Maybe the LI can bring out a side of Shepard we haven't seen yet that doesn't involve sex?

Hope ME3 will focus on that part also because I didn't build a bad ass character, sometimes I really wonder if Shepard does actually get sad or at least angry... She/He needs to think about the entire universe but is anyone out there thinking about her/him? For istance I didn't understand Liara choice on LOTSB, my Shepard should have been reeeally angry, instead she wasn't -.-

Well, since even forbbiding Shepard to pursue Saren and locking the Normandy made him (her) this angry and frustrated,...

Image IPB

(and Shepard's facial expressions or body language are out of player's control here, so it's safe the presume that this type of reactions are inseparable part of his (her) personality regardless of playstyle)

... I would say, that consequences of Reaper invasion should trigger even more emotions in him (her).

Personally, I would like to see more anger, frustration, sense of hopelesness, maybe lust for revenge, etc. As for crying / sheding a tear, I don't mind them, as long as they are optional and and recognizable in dialogue choices. On the other hand, I would quite welcome if, again, one of the squadmates has collapsed / started crying and it would be up to me to calm her (him) down. B) That's my favorite way of showing Shepard's sensitive and caring side.

Image IPB

(props to maestro Patryk Olejnizcak and his portrait for ME 3)

BTW 1: While the "Locker Scene" had excellent animations, I think that dialogues did not do them justice - they did not allow the player to truly express the frustration and feel of betrayal.
BTW 2: @IEatWhatIPoo!, your nick and avatar rock!  By all means, keep 'em.

Shep had an emotional outpouring (Shepard style) in LOTSB. Growling and grimacing or looking defeated and having some snippy dialogue seem to be the limits of the Shepard emotional repertoire. And you know what? That made the main character more human and relatable than the entirety of Mass Effect 2 before it, just as the locker scene stands out in most people's minds as one of the best scenes in ME1.

We don't need weeping or histrionics. We just need some expression.  A scene like the painting above with Miranda and ManShep would be incredibly powerful, even if it only lasted for one conversation.  Throw a few of those in the game (we would really only need two or three) and there will be a thousand times more emotional resonance than ME2 had.

I believe that people who believe that Shepard is a model of a real human at all - are either emotionally constipated, which is a degenerate state of being usually resulting in self-destructive behaviors. Or - are too innocent yet to realize that when people (men and women) go through some serious ****... they actually feel something, and it doesn't make them weak.

Dude..no one has time to be emotional at this point in the franchise. The Reapers are here and I know you heard Shepard in the that one commercial say "We fight or we die." There's no room for emotion in that statement. lol

Yes!

I love the rare moments in game where Shepard lets his guard down, and we see a flesh and blood human being, with all the weakeness that go along with that, under that gruff and tough exterior. (see Liara romance)

I support more of these moments in ME3, though there has to be some context. His public persona should always be one of confidence, so he shouldn't be revealing private doubts or fears in front of the entire crew, but there should be a few people he's comfortable with confiding with in private. Shepard isn't less of a leader for telling Liara in private that "I have no idea how I'm going to pull this off." That just makes him human, with the weight of the galaxy literally resting on his shoulders.

I agree with shep should be a behind closed doors type of emotional show if shep is going to fly into a rage or cry. However shep should be shocked and or worried in public because you can't completely get rid of that when faced with something so huge as reapers eating your friends. For instance when shep first saw the thorian he was in shock the line we're going to need bigger guns was best portrayed by fshep who showed worry in her voice over such a large creature it clearly demonstrated when she heard plant the thought foyer size not sky scraper size and the change in size also changed the mission for disposal.

I do want an exception though I just know when I run to the citadel and demand troops be send the council regardless of weather it is original or not will say no I want the option to fly into a rage over this. A moment like this I don't think anyone who cares for Earth would simply not be angered and upset maybe the council says no and on the right side of the wheel we get the typical responses but on the unused upper left we see a - Rage as an option if we hit that shep will be very upset if they're biotic they may even hurl a wave at them!

Yeah it would be nice to see more emotions coming from Shepard, not just the mask he puts on to conceal them.

Of course I am all for a wider array of choices being made available, so long as they are just that, choices, subject to the preference of the individual playing the game. I've seen a few complaints regarding a monotonous Shepard who never seems to react convincingly, yet in cases such as mine this more so appropriate for my character. A ruthless Earthborn who will willingly opt for “Renegade” when it means that his job is done properly – you wouldn’t expect this character to religiously burst into uncontrollable tears every time he is faced with uneasy predicaments.

I think it’s safe, however, to expect the most emotionally-charged incarnation of Shepard in this installment, as we make far more direct and potentially catastrophic decisions as it pertains to the survival of all organic existence.

To put it into context somewhat, I'd argue that until now we have yet to see Shepard in an astronomical decision-making situation that sees consequences felt immediately. The most applicable being the deciding on the Rachni’s future. Even so, as Rachni numbers are rapidly depleting and therefore less of a direct influence in the fate of Shepard’s quest, the true consequence of his decision is yet to be felt. Thus, explaining the lack of emotional response as you burn the Rachni queen alive.
ME3 is going to be completely different, with everything now so intricately balanced, it’ll be hard to not have to walk away having not made some form of a huge decision.

Empathy is a sign of intelligence. It may be the only thing that sets us apart from the Reapers. Empathy is what Shepard is fighting for. We don't know whether the Reapers are capable of empathy. I think Legion may be experiencing empathy.

One of the reasons I love Dead Space 2 is because they really made Isaac feel like he was a real person with emotions and breaking points. One of best moments in that game is when he sends someone away so that person can live but knowing that by doing that he's pretty much dead and he slides down the wall with a disheartened look on his face.

They could easily do something similar with Shepard maybe he sees an Alliance fleet being ripped apart or maybe one of the squadmates gets killed and he has a moment where you can see that all these battles have been adding up and he's starting to break a little under the stress of it all.

Something to make him feel like he's alive.

If by "emotions" you mean "buckshot" then I'm right there with you.

My paragade Shep doesn't deal with emotional baggage by crying - she makes other people cry. Briefly.

Well it would take a lot of writing and VA to pull off all these emotions people want their characters to experience. If it is handled like it was in LOtSB then I won't have a problem. But if they start making my Shepard cry or start smashing stuff without it being my choice than that just takes away from my experience playing Shepard how I envision him.

I get what your saying and I agree that something like this would be welcomed. But I would hope it would be subtle that way it wouldn't detract from how I envision my Shepard. Something similar happens in the SM in ME 2 if one of your squad mates dies. Although it is very brief I think thats a semi-good example of what your trying to say.

Showing emotion =/= crying. I don't think Shepard needs to break down and cry unless something incredibly traumatic happens (a LI's death for example), and even then, I'd rather it be saved until the Reapers are done.

All I want to see is some form of weariness. Shepard's been doing this a long time, lost some good people, and died. Then s/he was brought back solely to fight; just this-this-this, not a moment of peace even in death. And - though I'm just spitballing here - I would imagine that dying was a fairly traumatic experience, but had to be shelved like everything else.

Maybe at the penultimate moment, when Shepard finally has a moment to breathe before the end-all, s/he can just...look tired. That's all I'm asking for. Rest his/her head in his/her palms, give a low, drawn-out sigh, rub a hand over his/her face. Something to show the years of life Shepard's spent just fighting.

I just don't want to have 'Horizon' Shepard writing anymore. My Shepards are emotional, even renegon ones, and I just don't want that episode to repeat ever again. Shepard is strong woman/man and they deserve such treatment - they are human, they feel, and tis bloody time someone apart from Liara or Tali (if you romance her) notice that, but also, no more stupid dialogue options for Shepards all around the world. Tis major BS - Shepard can be paragon or renegade or something in between, but Shepard is human being and I expect that in ME3 BW story designers finally remember that.
