If every class can pick up and use any type of weapon then the Soldier needs a minigun or lmg.

The H&K MG36 is a light squad automatic machine gun, it shoots the same caliber as the standard issue G36 of the German army, its just a modified G36 that can take the heat and extra stress of long strings of fully automatic fire.
As example, the M2HB .50BMG is a heavy machine gun, but as most heavy machine guns this gun is not portable (the ammo is too heavy too) and cannot be shot from the shoulder.  What you probably want is a medium machine gun like the M60 or the M240G that has a bigger caliber than most standard issue rifles without being too big and unwieldy.

unless you are heavy weapons guy in TF2 and want to be moderately succesful. Admittedly accuracy is not required.

Very true, the rev is basically a minigun. But there is something about the spin up noise that gets the old blood tingling with your classic minigun.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but the mini gun has been in just about every major FPS that' I've played, going back to the good old days of Doom and the like.

I'm just bored of it.
Plus you'd think they would have more exotic and powerful weaponry in the future.
