Weaker Romance scenes just to avoid controversy

Nerf now did a pretty good take on it a while back

If it is to avoid controversy, wouldn't that be limiting the industry's creative output and some what censoring themselves to avoid people who do not even play from complaining about it aka the fox news sexbox BS that happened after ME1 was published.
I mean I don't expect a full blown (no pun intended) sex scene, but do the romances have to be so tame? These games are meant for mature gamers so shouldn't that be taken into account when writing and making the romance scenes. Or are the tame romance scenes just to avoid people grabbing torches and pitchforks and complaining about bioware corrupting people?
I mean nudity wouldn't be a problem as long as it was in good taste, but will bioware even go this route? Or would it be in their best interests to avoid it all together?
But I see Bioware games that have proven that the video game genre should be a form of art just as cinema is considered an art form. And cinema doesn't worry about censorship or causing controversy, so why should Bioware?

I think they're trying to be inclusive of a broader age group. They don't want to leave out the younglings.
I can see this train of thought on their part, but the game is rated mature so wouldn't that just need to be up to the youngings parents to decide if the want their child to play the game with such scenes in it? And if the scene was meaningful whats the problem?

The one that showed the most skin in Mass Effect 2 (Miranda) was already arguably the weakest anyway.

Dragon Age 2 was rated 18 and had plenty of filthy conversations but still went for the fade to black romance scenes. I don't really understand the logic.

@Slimgrin yet ME1 was rated 12 while ME2 was rated 15, maybe because of swearing or violence, so to me that doesn't say they are trying to go for a younger audience.

Depending on where you live. ME1 is rated M for mature in the US, and so is ME2.

You can be artistic without showing pixelated nudity.

Well I would argue that Jack's showed more skin just because of the characters design but that would be splitting hairs. And I agree that they do not have to show nudity to be artistic, but at the same time they do not need to tame down the romance scenes to avoid controversy. I feel the ME1 scenes were better and more meaningful than the ME2 scenes.
But if they if did show a little nudity or whatever they could do it in such a way that adds to the artistic value, Titanic showed a little bit of nudty but I never heard anyone complain about that since it was done it such a tasteful manner.

Anyway, I do agree with OP.
There should be nudity for intimate romance scenes.
Witcher 2 did it very wrong and I'm not asking for anything like that.
ME1 romance nudity is perfect.

I agree, also like the Scenes in LoSB I felt were really well done and tasteful the same time and they didn't show nudity. So nudity isn't the issue, tame/weak romance scenes are the issue. The ME1 scenes were better IMHO and if you take the way the did the scenes in ME1 and add the way they handled it in LoSB that would be a really good route to take to have a very moving and tasteful romance scene or scenes

That was just pathetic.
Then again I don't care much about Liara so probably my problem.

I'd love to bag some Asari hookers, Witcher style.
Only if there are male hookers as well.

Of course, if we can have the uniqueness of the ME2 scenes and the sensuality of the ME1 scenes, I'm all for it.

Pushing people out of windows? Fine.
Shooting people? Fine.
Showing people being liquified? Fine.
Showing entire ships full of people destroyed? Fine.
Showing people being tortured? Fine.
Show a bit of skin? WONT SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!

The romance scenes shouldn't be anymore explicit than ME1, no pixilatied boobs please. It's just not necessary.
I agree. This isn't some asari-hanar porn game on Shin Akiba.

Speaking of; Bioware needs to start work on making those.
