This month’s challenge is “Airships”.  The variety of airships in NWN right now is pretty sparse. You've basically got your choice of Boat-Lashed-To-Balloon, or Hammerhead Shark. That's all.

This theme was suggested by Eradrain.

Eradrain included several links in his original suggestion post: “…to get people's imaginations flowing, here are some pictures of airships. Get inspired!”
Final Fantasy Airship
Oriental Themed Airship
Generic Fantasy Airship
Steampunk Ironclad Airship
Steampunk Wooden Airship
Steampunk Battlecruiser Airships
Extremely Primitive Airship
Generic Fantasy Airship (With Christmas Lights!)
WoW Airship

Rules:
- It must be fully working in game.
- Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
- Teamwork is welcome.
- Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to me (NWNCCCMakers @ gmail.com – minus the spaces obviously) or a link provided by August 8, 2011 (which is a Monday) at 8 AM EST.  Note a few extra days this month are already built in. So don’t expect the usual grace period. ;)

*** Please do NOT post your content separately on the Vault.***

Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster (otherwise we will just pester you with questions!):
- 2da lines needed
- Screenshot for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie)
- Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie
- Any credits you would like listed
- If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about this month’s Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here. ***When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.***

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can vote for August’s theme here.  The voting dead line is July 31, 2011 at midnight GMT.   Huge thanks to Karvon for covering the paperwork stuff while I'm gone!

** Edited 7-5 to update the poll deadline time. **
** Edited 7-3 to add in poll information and fix the spelling oops in the title (Nice catch Jez!) **

I humbly suggest you extend the theme to anything Ship related (after all many things usable on a sea ship could be usefull for Airships). Otherwise you may end up with not much. People able to actually do Airship models are very scarce nowadays. (Julye? a she month? XD )

So far for this I have plans to make a giant barnacle placeable (so it can be placed on the side of any type of ship or used in an underwater location).

I think it'd be funny to have "giant sky barnacles" that grow on airships...a nice way for low-level characters to earn money by destroying them so that the airships don't get weighed down.

Suggestions for others:

Airship Tileset and Placeables:

Just a very small-feature tileset with some reworks of existing tiles from some other sets.  Basically, set in the sky (so no visible ground below).

Include some regular ship tiles (from perhaps the city exterior set), but with no water.  Remove the masts and sails from the ship(s), so that placeable ones can be used instead to better customize each airship with placeables:
- masts & sails
- propellers
- large balloons
- weaponry
- netting
- control devices
- storage placeables
- etc.

Also perhaps include a few sections of suspended/floating dock (so that it can easily be linked via transition to a different area made with any other tilset).

I wonder how loosely I can interpret the subject.

I have an idea for a mode of transport that certainly flies through the air, and has some degree of airshipnes, but would be a stretch to call a ship...

I'd like to see a tileset with some walkable sky tiles which could be used for flying action around airships, or simply stand alone for flying encounters. Some cloud tiles you could walk into/through would be cool too, but suspect that sort of thing might be rather laggy.

Regards,

Karvon

I kind of wanted to do a cloud tileset thing. Not a very big project, but yeah. :P

I would tend to agree.  While the original intent was to have new airship models, for those artists that can't do that level or 3d work, then anything ship related would be good.  *sheepish look*  Typo in title fixed.  Thanks. =)

Personally I was thinking of doing some ship type placeable sounds.  Bioware has some but the sail flap one in particular has always bugged me.  Let me know if y'all have any sounds in particular you want.

@Large Purple One - Ohhhh the barnacle sounds great. As well as the tileset suggestions. Very versitle.

I have no plans to participate in this month's contest. The theme just doesn't interest me. Good luck to all those who do take part, though. :-)

I'd like to make a gnome on a bike/kite-thingum with propellers, but since it would have to be a creature and even one for which I couldn't use existing animations, I think I won't participate this months either.
I don't want to learn about animations yet, when there are still so many tiles and placeables I want to make :P

I don't mind helping out with animations, if needed. Alternatively you could use the "mounted" animations and work from that, as I've done in the past with seated objects. :)

This is a WIP using a NWN2 boat and some placeables from TheGeorge along with a blimp's gas bag from this Turbosquid submission.  If I get this done on time it'll come in a much more sedate version as well as this one, which I'm hoping to be sort of a medieval fantasy version of the Serenity from Firefly.  Or something like that, anyway:

This isn't something I'm working on for the challenge, it's equal parts inspiration and wishful thinking:

Also, to repeat something The Amethyst Dragon mentioned: Not everything has to be a full airship/ship. There are all kinds of little placeables, sounds, scripts, etc. that could be made which would go along with the theme nicely.  If you want to try your hand at making an airship just think boat + balloon.  If you're doing a Spelljammer you don't even need the balloon.  Also, animated nodes which airship bodies could be attached to could be very useful as well.  Lots of inspiration here and a tutorial on how to set it up yourself, here.

UPDATE- doing "touch and go" landings:

any way we can expand on the airship theme? i do recall from previous poll's that it used to say Airships/ Steampunk, but the broader the theme themore likely to get more biulders in on the theme

I believe it was already agreed that any sorta ship related stuff would be OK. Look up at SL's comment of 3 days ago.

I would love a tileset like this for the plane of air.

Estel: What about something related to air pirates instead?

Old Time Radio: That's really impressive

I second the Plane of Air idea. You could do slightly visible ramps by having minor animations of 'air flow' or slightly curved clouds.

i believe Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance (2?) had a really good example of an air plane:

this was the only reference i could find for images, but essentialy it was a thin platform of earth that was brought together by magic

Oh, so Airships won over Planescape? Hm... :?

Aren't airships a favored means of transportation of the githyanki? *hint, hint* ;)

Hi all,

I not been about for a while but pleased to see Airships finally made the grade :)

I have a selection I could submit (see the link below for some short clips of them in action).

www.youtube.com/user/cyberglum#p/u

I'll be honest, I've not done any work on them the last couple of months, work has kept me busy. So basically I have static placeables of each of the ships, along with at least 1 animated version of them flying a particular path, in some cases up to 3. I've also got docking/undocking versions of at least 2, so they'll make a fine package to submit.

One thing...I've not mastered walk meshes, as I have wailed over in other threads a few months back. I've always felt the package would be incomplete without at least 1 tile version for each of the vessels. So, if anyone wants to throw in with me (as it were) and do some walkable versions I'd be over the moon. If not its not an issue, but you'd make an old man very happy.

Updated, WIP 3

New landntakeoff node using baked Bezier position, TCB rotation (or Euler XYZ, I forgot), with tweaked in and out curves on the landing and takeoff so craft slows as it lands and accelerates as it takes off.  Animated roof-mounted davit added which bobs throughout all animations and baked TCB  rotation heads turns from left to right, much smoother than native liner rotations.  I still have to do stuff like the rear propeller.

Love the animations on the crew OTR, really brings the thing to life.

I was poking around the stuff I'd done and found a couple of other bits;

Someone suggested this a while back when I did the flying speeders - a Flock of Seagulls. No, not the 80's new wave synth band who wanted a photograph of you, but an actual set of flocking seagulls.

So I did one: www.youtube.com/watch

I've also got a goblin Hang-glider as well as a dwarf strapped to one as well. They're just placeables right now, but I'll do some flaying animated versions of them too. I#ll stick a vid up once they're done.

Still holding out for a walk mesh hero!
