 Thank God for the console.

The Siege of Vigil's Keep was bugged beyond belief... I had to skip directly to the quest ending. The achievement unlocked, but the Herald's body was nowhere to be found, so I couldn't loot the Blessing of the Divine. I've read a few posts addressing these bugs... How prevalent are they? The problem must not be that common, or else Bioware would've addressed it (I hope, anyway).

Thoughts?

I defended Vigil's Keep once and was lucky enough to not run into this. Most of the time I defend Amaranthine.

There are many bugs still left in Awakening, and some are quite common (Silverite Mines bug). If there's no mod to fix the issue, hopefully you know enough ahead of time to avoid the bug(s).

Lots of things are broken in Awakening, and are unlikely to ever be fixed.

Thats disappointing to hear having just picked up DA:O UE on Steam to get Awakening (and 4 of the DLC)

During my last playthrough of Awakening I encountered no bugs except Sigrun's personal quest not starting as planned. So it is not as bad as some people make it seem.
Also I have never encountered the Siege of Vigil's Keep bug (did it only once for the Achievement). Personally I tend to play a ruler who tries to determine what would be worst of both evils to have destroyed. Amaranthine or Vigil's Keep. I always think... With Amaranthine gone I have less taxes income aswell as huge expenses rebuilding the city, were as under normal circumstances Vigil's Keep in a nation of peace would be lower priority.

Fortunately most of them are avoidable, so long as you are aware of them in advance.

Unfortunately, most people only come to the forums once they encounter a problem, and by then it's probably too late without loading a save from waaay back.

Arthur Cousland has a link to the Dragon Age wiki above.

If you aren't bothered by spoilers, it may well be worth your while to check it out. The problems with Awakening quests are laid out rather clearly there. In particular, I commend the articles on the Silverite Mine and Sigrun to you.

Save constantly, that's the best advice anyone can give you really. If you run into a bug, chances are that unless it's sigrun's personal quest it can be resolved via either console commands or addons :). I personally beat awakening last week with no bugs except for the aforementioned issue with sigurn.

Using multiple save files for insurance+backup should be mentioned in the loading screens (not just save often). That seems like it would be a solution to many problems that people run into, though most appear to just use the one file and get screwed after running into some nasty bug.

While most bugs are avoidable, there are many things that either won't appear or won't work properly without mods. Many random encounters that contain rare equipment never trigger, while Velanna's Exile is hit or miss, and then there's the missing pieces of the Blackblade armor set that are unavailable without mods. Unless you play on pc, you're out of luck.
