Will you sacrifice your LI to save the galaxy? Or be selfish like Neo in the Matrix?

As Mondo47 has said, if it takes a Greek Tragedy choice to make Mass Effect an epic story, then (despite my love for Greek Tragedies) I will be most displeased. Mass Effect is already epic - don't dumb it to a choice between a loved one and life everywhere. Please, BioWare...you're so much better than that. T_T

But if I absolutely had to choose...*sigh*...I'd choose the LI. What can I say, I'm a hopeless friggin' romantic.

A 97% dead Thane, or millions upon billions of theorotical innocents?

My one and only Shepard: Screw this.

(And so, Taitiana Shepard in a blaze of glory sacrifices herself. Somewhere, in limbo, she is laughing hysterically and taking about some insane gibberish about all the people who shunned her are coping with her absence, etc, etc...)

Somewhere in reality, Illusive Man 2.0 is gathering her remains. : )

Sad thing is, Thane-due to a sudden fit of coughing while avenging Shepard-is a bleeding corpse.

I just can't win. :[

I'll be selfish, it'll be biowares fault for implementing that kind of ending.

Absolutely. I wouldn't even hesitate and I think my love interest would understand.

Yup. Although such a decision is too cliche for BW.

I hope that's sarcasm.

It depends:
My main Shepard and Miranda made a promise to each other not to sacrifice the mission for the other. But as long as it's still a winning scenario, yes, this Shepard would let millions die for Miranda. If it was a situation where one of them had to die to ensure a victory, he'd sacrifice himself before Miranda.

My other Shepards might not do the same. Also I seriously hope they won't force a tragic ending on anyone, with the possible exception of Thane where those who romanced him knew from the start that he's dying.

I would sacrifice my LI.
If there is one thing Alpha Protocol teached me, that the saved person is never grateful, that you put his/her life over the life of thousands/millions.

Try to sacrifice himself first. If that's not possible sacrifice LI. That's what his LI would expect and demand Shepard to do. Nothing is more important than saving the galaxy. If Shepard fails, his LI would break up or even kill him. o_O
My Shep is gay, no love, so I don't get into this mess.

My main Shepard would definitely sacrifice any squad member, or herself if it was for the greater good. Most of my other Sheps would too.

If nothing else, those LIs would be haunted by the fact they are part-responsible for the deaths of so many. Kaidan and Ash didn't even like their romance with Shep causing the death of whichever one of them dies on Virmire. Translating that to a larger scale would just mean an LI with a serious dose of post-traumatic stress or survivor's guilt. I don't think Shep could save them in that situation and then have a happily-ever-after ending.

"What's wrong with selfishness and egotism? We live to die smiling, don't we? Mission. Destiny.
The cycle of rebirth. Forget them--they've got nothing to do with it."

Eh, the Reapers will come around again. Garrus won't. I'd sacrifice my Shepard before I'd sacrifice Garrus. I would sacrifice the galaxy before I would sacrifice my Shepard. Ultimately, My Shep is selfish when it comes to that sexy turian.

Honestly, it isn't Shep's fault that no one believed the ever present threat of the Reapers. In the words of Randy Marsh from SouthPark,"WE DIDN'T LISTEN!" Let the Council sacrifice themselves. Shep has died once before. She is off the payroll. Maybe their beloved use of air quotes will save them. The Reapers can't dispute that logic.

Yes my Sheps will sacrifice their LIs for the galaxy (save for one of them who would let the world burn first but his LI isn't any of the canon LIs).

Hmm. I saw this topic the first time and didn't bother responding because I have a Paragon and Renegade, so the choices seemed clear to me.

But after thinking about it, maybe I wouldn't do it with my Paragon Shepard, as long as it looked like I was losing the fight against the Reapers and the galaxy was doomed anyway. Let him have some peace until the end.

My Renegade? I imagine she would have no problem with it, she isn't particularly attached to anyone, I think. I'll wait and see how I feel about Liara after I play through both games again.

We can all talk about it now, thinking we have some idea of how we'll react when the moment comes, but the truth is that we dont really know until it happens. I think logically I'd have to sacrifice my love to save millions, but by the same token, im pretty sure that in the moment where i have to decide the fate of Ash or Miranda, i think ill have second thoughts and ultimately save her. Who knows? Maybe the moment won't be as sad or whatnot and maybe the LI will pull a Horizon on Shep that makes us a little more distanced.

I'm sure that BioWare will make it possible for Shep, LI and the universe to survive at once.

They should know that anything else would make some of their biggest fans... bit mentally unstable. Hehe. Hehehe. Mueehehehehehehehe! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Both the Sheps (paragon fem and renegade man) I plan on importing would save their LI, hop on the normandy and wave gently to the reapers as they ran away! Both are willing to sacrifice alot for the greater good but no one is gonna mess with Tali or Garrus!! :-)

I choose the third option and sacrifice myself. I couldn't let my LIs get sacrificed (It would break my heart) and I sure as hell can't let the galaxy get destroyed (it would break my Code)... but seriously if it did come down to it I say goodbye to my love.

Canonically my Shepard would sacrifice any one person to save millions. I think Garrus would probably hate her for choosing him over those millions anyway.

Still, I'd be tempted to meta-game the heck out of such a choice and save my favorite turian.

Well put Sticky.
And is that Kazuya M?   Where's mah cookie! :P

And another option for BW, though I hope and think that they WILL NOT take this route would be a Halo-ish type ending where if you destroy all life in the galaxy you take away the Reaper's food.  But then again, it is a very half-baked idea on my part (one that I came up with in less than 5 minutes, and quickly dismissed as silly).

But again, I really do hope that BW stays away from the "save LI or galaxy" cliche'd type of ending.  They are better writers than this.

I am not overtly selfish, but then again, love is somewhat of a selfish emotion. Having said that, I would let myself die before I could let Liara go before my eyes. Since this is a video game, and my gaming persona seems to fit the the saying of "Curiosity killed the cat", I will make saves that express both situations.
