Has anyone else noticed a trend with the
"accidental" reveals that keep happening with ME2/ME3? Almost
everything that has been released since ME2 has been "revealed" a few
days/weeks before the official announcement for it. Some obvious examples
include references about the Kasumi DLC being found in game files, weapons in
the Firepower DLC shown in the previews for the Shadow Broker DLC, and the
achievements for the Arrival DLC being shown on XBL and PSN more than a week
before the "official" announcement.

With the exception of the Firepower weapons, each one of these was called a
"mistake" and taken down soon after it appeared or in the case of the
Kasumi DLC, simply denied. However, if you look at the responses careful,
Bioware (usually through Chris Priestly) does not claim that the
"accidentally" reveal item in question does not exist. Rather that it
was a mistake that should not have been there or that they have "no plans
for such at the moment." Also after the initial denial, all further
discussion or questioning is directed back to the original statement with no
new information or clarification given. I believe that the Legion reveal,
Overload DLC, and Firewalker DLC also fall into this situation but I have not
been able to find the original post about them to be certain.

As you can probably tell from the tone, I do not believe these reveals to
be accidental. As careful as anyone for Bioware is to reveal anything even in
passing on these forums, I find it difficult to believe that that many
"accidental" reveals could have slipped passed without anyone in the
company noticing. Especially given that most of these were though official
company releases no less! One or two maybe, but almost every major DLC for the
game? That's pushing the limits of believability. On a side note, as a market stagey
it's brilliant. Throw the hardcore fans a bone that they're sure to pounce on
and start rumors through BSN, facebook, etc. that draw people in. Officially
deny the reveal and stir up the forums, etc. so even more people are draw in to
see what the excitement is about and tip off the internet game site (which we
know, at least some, keep an ear very close to the ground on the forums for any
news). Then when interest is peaked and many more people are drawn in, make the
"official" announcement. It seems these "leaks" could only
help Bioware.

Why is this in the ME3 section rather than the general one? I believe that
the supposed "Prothean DLC" is another perfect example of the
"accidental" reveal. I don’t purpose to know what it’s about or how
it is handled, simple that it exists. It was a very specific reference that is
quickly removed once widely known (in the forum) and a denial that it is was a
mistake. Not that it didn't exist or wouldn't be included, simply that the line
about the Prothean DLC shouldn't have been on the ad. And coincidentally it happens
right at the beginning of E3 when they try to get publicity for the game.
Thoughts?

I'm a collector of Transformers, and as such, we have found a tendency of toys being unofficially 'leaked'in the form of prototypes, which has reduced in frequency now that the instructions for said toys carry a teaser for the remolded toy. Which is a long way to say "biggest guy when it comes to toys does it, so it figures that Bioware does it too."

lol name a better way to advertise than to say something is a secret/accident/wasn't supposed to be released. I click on those first all the time, everytime. If it is not really an accident, who cares. They're letting us know without saying it's absolutely true. It gets people talking and gets the hype up. Which is exactly what fantastic games like the ME series deserve. So let it be. Don't talk **** on Bioware. They are gods among men.

I enjoy the little teasers and I can only hope that I can have a prothean squadmate to have with me in ME3!

Actually, I said it was a brilliant strategy. I am all in favor of it because I eat it up just like everyone else. I was actually providing a counterpoint to the Prothean DLC argument by pointly out the trend. (Not that I want to start that argrument here.) There's already a post for that here -  social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/7561336/1.

I like the accidental "spoilers" They give me a reason to indulge in a game. The more rumor worthy something is, the more intrigued I am about it. It's great the Bioware is utilizing this market mechanic of interest. It keeps the interest in their games up. Even though I'm the prey, I love being the prey. Bioware does great things. I'd like more of it to happen.

bioware does seem to do them by accident but sometimes leaks are done on purpose to drum up publicity and gauge how people react to such ideas.

For instance the music industry tends to leak the single and even albums before unveiling and launching them to drum up interest and people willing to purchase it (just got to make sure its not at maximum quality then people will not see the point of purchasing it)

The Movie industry does leak on purpose some times like trailers, posters even on occasion original scripts because they will pop up on websites for free.

Simply sometimes they are genuine accidents but in other cases they do it on purpose and make it look like an accident.

Errr that was not leaked in any official statement by BioWare. The Prothean Squadmate was part of their selling points for the CE the day it was announced at E3 and was an official BioWare picture that appeared on Origin.

Really? I could have sworn they claimed they have no new information about it at this team, and hinted that they were interested in it in the future as a company.

And whenever asked about it, all they say is "we are focused on the single player", which, in marketing lingo, is nothing more than simple "we can't confirm or deny anything about THAT, but we ARE doing THIS".

Satisfies most of your criteria in your OP.

It's like when a whistle blower or the military accidentally releasing something to the media it's not accidental.

Bioware is a genius for this. Making something look like a "leak", only to have it be announced later in the future. I salute thee.

Kasumi's files were in the game because she was planned to be from the very beginning, I suspect the reason being for them already being present is because it would aimplify the 'integration' of the DLC-module. The weapons were shown on purpose, most definitely not by some accident.

Now, Legion as a squaddie and the PS3 version of ME2, the former called back on and the latter just simply 'corrected', those were accidental leaks. If anything, the Prothean DLC falls into this category.

I don't know, I think fantastic games don't need that. The reason I bought ME2 was because I saw the game, played it a bit and looked kind of like this afterwards , there is no smiley like this with drool so just imagine that part.

I think it's a cheap trick and if the game is as good as ME2 or even better, then it's just unnecessary. All the dlc besides AAP and a part of Arrival (I actually like it, but it was kind of lame to not make the slightest difference with anything you do) was worth the money and I bought because it added to a brilliant game, no more reasons needed.

I would love to see a trailer for a game with simple Game footage and one written sentence at the end: "We let the game make our marketing".

And I can't agree with this sentence "Don't talk **** on Bioware. They are gods among men", that may apply to the ME team, but not the whole company.

Like I said many times in the past.... they were intentional reveals. The biggest example was the "Arrival leak" with the achievements. A 20 page thread in less than 24h. abd not a single mod to respond to it.

Get it? Most, if not all, were intentional. It's called indirect marketing.

So, what, you'd have them lie for a week and then say actually it does exist? In all the leaks there has been so much evidence pointing to the DLC's existence that to deny would just be pointless and make it difficult for consumers to trust Bioware's word at face value. Once something has been leaked, intentionally or not, there's no point trying to cover it up if the actual reveal is very close.

The Prothean DLC was apparently a mistake according to several devs.

Remember how "ME3" was available in one online shop the day before VGA? :-P
That's a common practice. Apple constnatly "leaks" iSomething. Wizards of the coast constantly leak cards from new set. Anyone surprised?
I wonder how many "leaks" will happen before release of ME3

i think its all done on purpose because they just want to see what us gamers love and hate simple as that. people getting all hyped up about this prothean squadmate is obviously a way to see how people will react.
