Given that ME3 appears to be starting off with a bang (the reapers are laying the smack-down on humanity and Earth)....how do you think side quests will work during the trilogy's concluding chapter?  I mean, with Earth attacked and occupied (i'm assuming it gets occupied) it seems like any quests that do not directly advance Shepard's mission to save earth/humanity will seem both trivial and irresponsible.  For example, I couldn't imagine devoting time to help Patriarch with some thugs or fetch some asari her locket while Earth is burning.

Again? You can say this about every game Bioware has made. Why is the Warden in the Pearl while the southern part of Fereldan is being engulfed? Why is Shepard dancing in Flux when Saren is recruiting Geth and looking for the Conduit; in a missions appropriately named "Race against time"? Why is Shepard finding a Volus credit Chit while humans are being turned to goo by the Collectors?

It's an RPG, it has sidequests. In just about every RPG, the is an overwhelming force killing things while the PC is searching for kittens in trees. ME3 will be no different.

Haha would be nice if squaddies complained while doing sidequests :P

Garrus: "Again Shepard, another 3 million just died.. We really don't have time for this"

Of course, shouldn't affect the epilogue or win conditions at all =)

I read a magazine article on ME3 the other day (I can't find it at the moment) where Casey pretty much said: "All side-missions in Mass Effect 3 contribute to the war effort"

This doesn't mean developers shouldn't find a way to make sidequests feel more relevant to the game's main plot. It's also a bit different this time around - we KNOW what is happening while we're playing the game. The Reapers are killing thousands upon thousands of people. It's not exactly like that in ME1 or 2.

I have no problems, with those "right on my path" sidequests, but going out of your way to kill a bunch of eclipse mercs would be bad.

In ME1 i roleplayed like "oh it's in the nearest star cluster, might as well check it out quickly".
In ME2 you got nothing to do until TIM calls you anyway.

Sidequest to me are breaks in between the main story if the game gives me options to break from the main quest I do it and I love it. I get annoyed when I can't break away from it the game goes by too fast and considering that ME series only has 4 - 5 main missions before the game's final mission that's a really really short game. I consider in MEs case the sidequest a must to extending the game they need to be interesting and fun.

I would hate for BW to get rid of them for 3 unless they're going to do 40 main quest levels then I'd be fine with sidequest removal but sense they won't do that they must stay in.

The way they have described the story of Mass Effect 3, sidequests actually can make sense.
Once you have fled from earth, you have basically no idea how to defeat the Reapers, you have to find a way and adjust your strategy all the time. So you start to look in every corner of the Galaxy for a way to win this war and while you're there, you might do some work on the side, that'll provide some additional ressources. Exploration makes perfect sense in such a scenario. The final clue to take down the Reapers might be in finding some Asari's locket.

they say the sidequests are for the races and help make sure they are loyal to you and them and help them out of their personal troubles so they won't have anymore troubles when facing the Reapers

It never really bothered me because it is typical game design that I should be used to by now. ME2 did shake it up at the end though...with that whole liquefying the crew if you take too long.

And you just wasted 5 seconds of my time reading this and replying that you wasted my time. Thanks, bud.
