Disagree.

Though, there were times that I felt like cringing during some of the dialogue, even to the point of it being distracting, due to it's annoyance—I think the short development time and the overall poor execution of trying to get the DA world to the point/era of renegade mage rebellion was what did it in.

Another problem with DA2. The writters did indeed fail to properly convey why Templars are needed. Making every mage an abomination ready to happen just  overdid it. It was so over the top to the point where it was obvious that that every bloodmage was just a reason for players to side with the Templars because of the failure on the part of the writters to present a believable justification.  With that said I ignored every last abomination. Didn't happen as far as I'm concerned. Orsino died in combat. Orsino in a game where you side with the mages was one of the most horrid displays of wirtting fail I have ever been a witness to. I think Gaider should have been fired.  If abominations were that easy in Kirkwall (yes, I've heard all the rationales) then there would be no circle there. Completely lazy, uninspired storytelling which prevented me from having any other deciding factor than "sister is a mage, so I'll side with mages".

I would have focused on public pressure. Free mages being picked on, discriminated against or physically harmed. I would have shown that although the mages don't understand because they are removed from the situation at a young age, their lives would not be that great or cut short without a circle. Bethany sorta hinted at the idea, but it wasn't developed enough. And using a place where the mages are practically imprisoned didn't help any. The two extremes were bordering on cartoonish representation.

I think part of the problem is precisely that the writers want to make it look like the Templars are needed, hence the overkill.
It is not the same as adding ambiguity.

Then again, Templars and the Chantry in general were shown to be so incompetent, that I am not sure what the writers were aiming for precisely. I am guessing they were tryign to get us to sympathize with Meredith for instance, when she gave Orsino time to fortify before she proceeds to massacre all mages who didn't do anything, but if the best way to make us sympathise with characters is to turn them into idiots, then there's a problem.

Did anyone mention the complete absence of the City Watch? As far as I remember, you get some sentences from Aveline in Act3 regarding her troops to calm down the situation here and there when templars and mages clash. However, I didn't see any scenes in which the City Watch was used or useful in any way. They weren't even patrolling the city's streets during nightfall.

What was the purpose of establishing a City Watch if they don't take any action whatsoever against anybody after all?

^ Well, that goes down to Aveline being a incompetent and bad Captain of Guard, fits perfectly what we see and are told, so didn't bother me.

It isn't just act 3 the city guardsmen don't do anything. If you ever fight one of the random gangs at night and attract them to a guard, they just stand there. Sometimes after the fights they will respond: "all is quiet" to your group. The time they did anything was when you went with Aveline to do a surprise inspection during one of the patrols.

Actually, you know, I have to agree.

If a game has great writing and characters, I'll keep coming back to it. I'm not a big fans of the combat in Origins but I played through it countless times.

Now, I found the combat better in DA2, and the graphics and all. But...after two playthroughs, it hasn't pulled me back. I've even done two more Origin playthroughs but not DA2. Hopefully the new DLC will get me to do a new playthrough.
