Jacob is the human male lead. That's why. I mean his two counterparts are an assassin abandons his son after his wife dies and a former C-Sec officer that seems to do whatever Shepard says without question.Give a human character either personality and I doubt they'd be popular.
Heck Kaidan was called a whiner. He gives tactical analysis voluntarily and gives person info at Shepard's behest. Yet he is was called a whiner. Garrus was more fitting of the title but he was cool looking alien....and the rest is history.
Wow Darc, this again? Really?
Kaidan has a larger fanbase than Jacob. Both being human leads. And stop coming with the "he's not a cool looking alien". Why not just accept that some people dislike Jacob because he has a ****ty personality and there's no other reason behind that?

Exactly. That was really rude and uncalled for on Jacob's part. It's rather ironic how Shepard calls Jacob "a gun for hire" at the beginning.ladyvader wrote...
My thing with Jacob after Thane's RM is how he just dismisses him as a merc. What the hell are you Jacob? Even Shepard at the beginning of the game called him a gun for hire to TIM.

People dislike Jacob because:
1.) He doesn't need Shepard to fix him like other squaddies
2.) His LM doens't make up his whole character or effect him that much.
3.) He's a human male squaddie
4.) He's sane
5.) He's not an alien.
6.) He's snarky to Tali (who's horrible to him despute him being friendly to her)
I dislike Jacob and it's not for any of those reasons.
Doesn't he only say this after Shepard rejects him during the cabin scene? It always seemed more like a way to get into her pants, if you don't mind me saying.ADLegend21 wrote...
Despite this he's the only Love interest to actually ask Shepard about her problems and he's the only one that says "I love you" (Miranda's close by saying "this is no time for love").

During Jacob's last romance scene, you have three chances to reject him. He thinks you're messing around the first two times (they weren't really rejections, the first two options,) and after the first time, he says, "Win, lose, it doesn't matter. I love you." I thought it was really sweet, because during one of the previous romance scenes, you can try and get him to say those three words and if you push him, he'll push back.
If you don't choose that option, he just says, "Win, lose, it doesn't matter, I want you." So...
Thane tells Shepard he loves her... in his LotSB letter... granted, Shepard wasn't exactly supposed to see it while Thane was still alive, he hadn't sent it to her, it was intercepted somehow while being saved to his computer.

No he's not.
In my adept playthrough, if I wanted incendiary ammo I could just use Grunt. I didn't even need Jacob's pull since I already had it myself, and well, Grunt has fortification plus assault rifles so Jacob's barrier is pretty useless too.
I just never found myself on the character selection screen just before a mission thinking "Jacob would be really useful here", because he just ... wasn't. Mordin got a lot of screen time on my hardcore/insanity playthroughs (incinerate hell yes), and if I was a non-caster and wanted to create warp bombs I could bring Miranda and Samara along, plus Miranda also has overload and Samara has reave which is great at staggering enemies.
But then there's Jacob. tbh, I found myself in the same situation with Tali, I mean I even like her character and would love to take her along, but good lord her powers are useless most of the time.

I agree that Tali has a trashy build. I get the most out of her when I'm playing a Sentinel and can force her recharges to reset.
But I disagree on most of your points about Jacob. Squad Incendiary Ammo is most useful right out of the gate, when you'll be doing a lot of missions against armored and regenerating targets. You have to wade through a ton of these targets just to obtain Grunt. Once you have him in your squad, his Incendiary Ammo has a largely underwhelming prerequisite, meaning you might still have to wait to use it. And I don't know why you'd ever allow Grunt to use his assault rifle. He shines in close combat, and handing him a shotgun is one way to get him where he performs best.
I find that Jacob pairs best with Miranda, especially if you're an Adept or Sentinel. He'll provide enough Pulls for you to use your cooldowns on Warp, Singularity, or other high priority powers.
To each their own. Certain squadmates and strategies suit some players better than others. I don't think it's fair to say he's useless in combat, though.

mordin to incinerate armoured enemies, garrus to overload blue suns shielding, and once i've stripped the armour off of krogan I can just use garrus' concussive shot to knock them back too after which I pump them full of bullets so they don't have time to regenerate.

I'm saying Jacob sucks for tanking whereas Grunt is much better at it, which kinda makes Jacob's barrier power useless. on top of that, he doesn't have the massive health regeneration Grunt does either.

or I can just use Samara who has reave as well

well no matter what mission I went on, I just never thought "Jacob would be perfect for this" since there was always someone better. and holy bejesus, on my vanguard playthrough atm he's beyond useless since I have all of his powers and more anyway

He's not supposed to beat Grunt at tanking. Likewise, he's not supposed to beat Jack/Samara/Morinth at being a pullbot. He's a hybrid: ammo support + pullbot utility.
I agree that Barrier is lackluster. I rarely bother with it. CC-Tron likes building Jacob into an Inferno Ammo tank to fight alongside Grunt on the front lines, which he reports is an effective tactic. I haven't tested it enough to say whether or not it would work for me.

Thanks for clarifying, Asenza!
to give specific wording - the rejection is actualy "if you came her to talk about how you don't want to talk, I have other things to worry about" - you basicaly call himout on his attempts to be suave and he drops it and gets serious instead. I love it
as far as combat, Jacob is definitely a squadmate that works best in combo's with Miranda he's a freaking war Machine and not half bad with Thane either.
