Ah, a thread about how much Jacob sucks as a character. Now this I can get down with! I find him boring because he is incapable of having any kind of decent, thought provoking conversation with my manShep. More so: everyone of the other crew members has some sort of revelation when it comes to their loyalty missions, but even in this case, Jacob might as well be a prop in the scenery for all his reaction is worth it
As a character, Jacob is interested in the failures of bureaucracy. He wants to do the right thing, and feels frustrated when those in power don't use their resources for good. He's all about action, about getting things done. That's the point. He's not supposed to wallow in grief after dealing with his father. That's not Jacob.
In an effective story, every character need not be dynamic. If every character goes through some wondrous metamorphosis, the reader (or player) will become desensitized to these transformations. They will lose their meaning. Including a solid character that refuses to be overtly swayed by Shepard or the personal tragedies he encounters is an intriguing move on Bioware's part, and one I can appreciate.
I think you can easily read his character as being emotionally repressed. He never wants to talk about the travesty with his father. It's hard to pin him down when it comes to romance as his dialogue is a minefield of rejections.
But I find it more convincing to think of him as a man who is determined to remain in control of himself. He has seen a lot. He has respect for Shepard, though, and refuses to burden him/her with unnecessary baggage. I won't argue that all of his lines are perfectly written. His comments to Thane and Tali seem out of character. And there's really no accounting for taste. All the same, I like Jacob. He's my favorite squadmate, and I hope he plays a large role in ME3.
