...but the prize!
I like him. He's funny, and I enjoyed his quest.

The
sad thing about Jacob is that he could have been a great character. He
could have been this great Alistair like buddy that Shepard could relate
to(being ex. alliance turned Cerberus) instead of some dull brooder
that says nothing of interest.

Honestly, that's what the
character first started as. I love his first Renegade speech where he
mentions the true heroes are never mentioned in the spotlight and how
you were the Alliance's poster boy for six months after you died. Wish
it stayed that way.

Yeah, his character continued to get worse and worse as time went on. He ended up trading personalities with pre-FP Miranda.

It's pretty pitiful how I end up learning more about Zaeed and Kasumi even though they don't even have conversational wheel dialogs on the ship.

Though that's the case with most companions, all of Zaeed and Kasumi's backround is told through their items and they don't have any conversation where they whine about their issues because it's all resolved on the loyalty mission itself.

Zaeed and Kasumi actually have the most to say out of all the squadmates despite the lack of conversation wheel ironically enough. I like how they mention missions Shepard did through-out the game and make comments about other squadmates.

They should have delayed the game to give them recruitment missions like the rest. They're two of the best characters.

I would love if all companions were a mixture of infrequent but cinematic wheel conversations (Most) and the less cinematic but more frequent current event comments (Kasumi/Zaeed). I also liked being able to spark up a conversation with Kasumi and Zaeed about objects in their room. I like that it basically asserts I have the choice to talk about something of my choosing, when I choose, in whatever order.

As for the topic of Jacob, he (1) lacks consistency and (2) doesn't have an archetype.

By lacks consistency, I mean it's hard to pin down his personality. In the beginning, he seemed like a very honest, noble, nice guy. Later though, like after several characters' recruitment missions, he seems like a petty jerk. When Thane is recruited, Jacob, the terrorist hired gun, has a problem with him, for some reason. Jacob is a jerk to Tali too. Not to mention that he comes on very strongly until you board the Normandy, where suddenly he becomes very distant and off-put by Shepard.

By archetype, I mean he doesn't have a theme, like other characters do. Miranda is the Genetically Engineered Cerberus Loyalist. Thane is the Dying Repentent Assassin. Garrus is Batman. Even Kaidan was the Idealist Soldier and L2 Biotic.

I would have loved Jacob if his personality stayed the same it was in the earlier parts of the game, and I think he would have been a much more interesting character thematically if say... it turned out he was actually still Alliance, secretly infiltrator Cerberus.

Hmmm.... I don't agree that Jacob is acting like a jerk when he tells Tali about EDI.

When she comes over to the Normandy he is polite to her when they talk. Don't remember the exact scentence he uses but something along the lines of her being a good addition to the team. Tali tells him not to play nice, she doesn't trust Cerberus and doesn't know that actually Jacob doesn't trust them either. Jacob is working with Cerberus not out of a belief that it's the best organization in the world, it's more a matter of them actually confronting the threat of the reapers. Remember all the irritating times when people mistruted Shepard due to connections with Cerberus, it's the same for Jacob. Just like my Shepard he's wearing the uniform, but he doesn't trust them.

I always pick up Tali very late in the game so at that point EDI has been unschakeled, it would perhaps have been a good idea for my FemShep to remember to inform Tali of that when getting her. I can imagine that it is info that Tali would like to have. But Shepard says nothing and Tali is about to leave the room, Jacob tells the quarian that there is a AI on board. I really don't see that as being a jerk.

This situation always surprised me. Yes, Tali is rather offensive towards to Cerberus, but:

a) Jacob saw it coming - even if he doesn't know details, he knows that Cerberus had problems with Flotilla. Tali and Prazza even reminded everyone about quarians distaste to Cerberus on Freedom's Progress.

B) Tali didn't came with hitchhiker sign - it was TIM who gave dossier and Shepard who did recruiting. This means they considered Tali as important for mission (she might be the only tech expert at that time if Stolen Memory not installed and Derelict Reaper left until fixing other problems). Starting pissing contest with person your bosses picked to save everyone's, Jacob's included, bacon, basing on their rather typical initial reaction? Pfft, Jacob, you're ready to join terrorists to save lives, but not ready to tolerate one cautious quarian?

c) Jacob isn't the big fan of Cerberus himself, according to what he states during first talk on Normandy and what TIM says when asked about Jacob and Miranda. If there are "questionable actions" for him, then why Tali isn't allowed to question Cerberus? More of that, Tali speaks like she has nothing about Jacob himself - "I don't know who you are," - she only suspicious about organisation.

Do I hate Jacob for that? Hm, no. To the moment Tali appears (usually my last recruitment before one side mission, trial, Derelict Reaper, house divided and O4) I'm usually fed up with "Already? I'm not big on forcing these talks". But that's definitely "WTF?" moment.

I don't know what people are reading into that meeting but here's a video and Jacob is being perfectly polite and welcoming, while Tali is a fair bit more personally snippy with him

HAH YES, 'drinks.' The alcoholic liquids Jacob plans to spill with you, allegedly on the Citadel. Ah, we have dismissed that claim.

So this guy that doesn't open up to you in any conversation (past the first, over things he mostly covered before FP) or get you to open up to him unless you're trying to get in his pants, and is always the one who's ending the conversations you start with him (rather eagerly, it seems), now considers me his best buddy?

Sorry, but Jacob's hug was not convincing in the least. Pretty much the cherry on a bad-writing sundae.

And therein an instance where I think Jacob being black is one of few things that make him less hated than he would otherwise be, the culutral sterotype of the black guy being friendly/cool and so people are made to think he's your black brotha. Except if you actually pay attention, you see that his character is anything but.

I find Jacob to be slightly dull to be honest. He does have some bright moments and his loyal quest was interesting.

To be fair he isn't as bad as the king of dull Grunt who is the worst character in any Bioware game period.

hmmm... I'm doing a run with Jacob in 100% of the missions that he can participate and he's not so bad, after all. He's really annoying when he has his Barrier power though!

No, because people still don't like him and don't want him to return (if they let him live in ME2).  I play the Soldier classes (Soldier, Vanguard,Infiltrator)  and Jacob is always a great squad member to have - if only they had given him assault rifles in ME 2 at the ouset.....

MY Renegon Shep used Jacob a great deal...provides Shep with 'Squad Incidery'....Jacob gets a few comments with Renegading Shep, I enjoyed them, I now refer to Jacob as 'Jiminy Cricket'...had a lot of fun with his comments.

Or maybe the haters are just jealous. Kasumi does not want to get into male Shepard's pants. She wants to get into Jacob's.

And he f* Miranda before Shepardt did it...

Lol! Yeah! That's messed. I can't believe bioware let jacob hit that! Miranda should have been a virgin waiting for Sheaprd, and Shepard ALONE! Image IPB Nah...I kid.

I like that Miranda and Jacob have had a relationship in the past. Gives me reason not to romance any of them.
