*He's passive-aggressive and occasionally racist ("cuttlebone")
*He's static
*You could remove him from the story and not change much
*"Better man than I" delivered to Femshep

Shepard:"Hell Garrus you were always ugly, slap some facepaint on there an noone will notice" so insulting the turian appearance is racist so Shep is obviously racist too.
Garrus and Tali are also static yet immensly popular.
you could remove Everyone from the game except Liara and Miranda and the story's still the same. Liara's integral to the prothean facts in ME1 and she and Miranda are the reason Shepard is alive in ME2 so they HAVE to be in the game.
Better man than I is delivered ot both male and female Shepard as a jab at Miranda's relationship behavior which is only speculated on until LoTSB meaning that Jacob possibly tried to get her pregnant but failed meaning he wasn't good enough to get passed her problem.

I like Jacob. I find him funny, especially "The priiiiize" part, it always cracks me up.

Technically, you can cut Miranda out of the game with no trouble either.

Since Wilson is the one that did all the legwork.

Of the companions, the following are mission critical:

Swarm countermeasure: Mordin
1 of 3 leaders: Miranda, Jacob, Garrus
1 of 2 biotic specialists: Samara (Morinth), Jack
1 of 3 tech specialists: Legion, Tali, (Kasumi)

However, if you're willing to accept casualties on the Suicide Mission, then only Mordin is mission critical, because without his countermeasures the party would have been frozen/captured and fail to defeat the Collectors.

A few reasons why he is disliked:

(1) Standard male reaction to a possible competitor (I suspect this to be the no.1 reason for male players)
(2) Tali fans don't like his comment to Tali about EDI
(3) Miranda fans don't like that he had something with her
(4) Thane fans don't like Jacob's reaction to him.
(5) The "priize" comment (I suspect this to be the no. 1 reason for female players)

It's quite sad, since his romance, apart from the "prize" line, is very good. It took six playthroughs for me to try his romance, and I was really surprised by it.

I think the general preference for non-human LIs exists because we apply different standards to humans in terms of attractivity. Tali and Garrus don't have a face to judge for its appearance, so that aspect gets mostly ignored by the players, while in humans it's something you select by *and* both Miranda's and Jacob's faces have their problems at times.

Edit:
Some interesting correlations:
People who like Jacob also tend to like
*Kaidan (female player preference and human LI preference I guess)
*Samara
*Morinth (yes, both of them, a mysterious result - perhaps a little "rooting for the underdog" in it)
*Miranda (likely human LI preference, still somewhat surprising)

There are no particular correlations for people who dislike Jacob except a very minor one with Tali fans.

I fit this profile, but add Liara, Ashley and Mordin to the "like" list. :wizard:

It's hard to explain why I like Samara AND Morinth. I guess because while "I" would always side with Samara, much of who she has become is because of Morinth. And Morinth is the most insidious and dangerous kind of predator—the kind who makes you want her to kill you. And both Samara and Morinth have fantastic voice acting, and the Ardat-Yakshi mission is one of the most unique in the game, not your typical kick-in-the-door-and-start-shooting missions.

And yes, I have a psycho b¡tch Shepard who saved Morinth, and will always save Morinth.;)

1. He's normal, so people think he's boring. (I like that myself. Finally, a crew member who doesn't need any hand-holding!)

2. The way femShep speaks to him is such a turn off!
I couldn't actually appreciate Jacob until I played manShep.

2a. Trying to just talk and get to know Jacob as a person without coming onto him as femShep was hard. I never felt so on edge when talking to someone before while trying to navigate through a conversation. (Where were the friendship options Bioware???)

3. Some of his dialogue left a bit to be desired (as many others have pointed out before me).

On a side note, why are people making all these Jacob threads? They're popping up all over the place and asking the same things?

Oh, right. She was just the supervisor of the Lazarus project. I stand corrected.

Jacob doesn't get a lot of fan devotion for a few reasons, the first of which is that he is human and by default less interesting than the alien characters. That, and the fact that even for a human he's rather boring, and at times even standoffish (I'm not into forcing these talks, Shepard) doesn't help him.

On a side note, I'm pleasantly suprised to see that no Jacob fans have suggested racism in this thread yet, or at least not seriously. Every time this discussion came up in the past that old strawman was usually thrown out early. Glad to see we've evolved a bit. Image IPB

Yeah, I guess that part where he was too busy packing Hershey Kisses in his pants, to stabilize Shep's vitals, while Miranda kept her cool didn't count. Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

BOT:

Overall, Jacob was fine in my book, could have done without the "Is that all Commander?" bit though.

I'm still hoping we get to go for those drinks on the Citadel at some point. Jacob has obviously never heard of Shep's prowess when it comes to drinking the green stuff.

I hope so too. And then they could end the night with some slightly awkward dancing.

Why do people dislike his loyalty mission though? I rather liked it, if not necessarily how he reacted to it...

I really enjoyed his loyalty mission; it's my second favourite, after Legion's 'A House Divided' LM. Especially if you choose the neutral ending. I like the fact that he's not willing to go out of his way to save his father and wants him to own up.

My problem with his loyality mission has nothing to do with Jacob, and everything to do with the fact that woman are turned into biological love dolls.

People don't like it?  It was one of my favorite missions in ME2 the first time through.  One the mystery was done though it lost some of its appeal, still its definitely one of the best.  Maybe people are sensitive to the implied rape/abuse/etc.?  I dunno, it just doesn't seem that bad when Shepard and Co. kill 50+ people most missions.  "That Eclipse Vanguard was a mother of three, you monster!"

He is a boring and genric charactar. Nothing stands out about him. It might also be the fact that he is very pale in comparison to most of the other ME characters. If Jacob was in another game, then he might seem a bit more intresting.

I don't really dislike Jacob, but I do dislike the mega-sleazoid queen that my femshep turns into when she's talking to him. I think that translates for most people into dislike for Jacob, I avoid talking to him because of it.

Pretty much this.  It's a shame, really, as the romance w/ Jacob actually lets femshep vent about being dead among other things.

That certainly wasn't portrayed in a positive light. Jacob's father is portrayed as a villain for that very reason.

1a - the priiiiiiiiiiize
1b - femshep acting like a dog in heat around him
2 - his loyalty mission and his annoying dialog in (apple fall very far from the tree?)
3 - poor mix of powers as a squad mate.

If FemShep's voice acting didn't make it sound like she was trying to hump him, I'm sure I would have gotten to know him a lot better during the personal chats.

As it stands, though, his writing over the course of the game is a bit inconsistent, particularly in terms of hostility to certain characters during their post-recruitment briefings. It seems like Jacob gets less friendly just at the point where Miranda starts to open up a bit.

I just posted this somewhere else:

"I was lurking this thread - because I like to lurk - and I don't really like being a hater or ruining a sanctuary for a particular fan base. I'm more of a "to each his own" type of person, but I saw this post and felt like I needed to speak up a bit. Possibly discuss the male human NPCs a bit with some people who actually enjoy them.

HERE WE GO ESSAY TIME:

Contrary to popular belief, the fact that people dislike Kaidan or Jacob but like male companions Garrus has little to do with the fact that he is alien, and therefore "more interesting". The cultural aspect can add depth to a character, but that isn't was truly shapes them. I LOVED Ashley (who is human) even though I disagree with her moral standpoints. She was very fleshed out and I admired her spirit. I loved the little stories about her sisters, her father, poems, why she was so deeply set in her ways etc. I also went with Alistair instead of Zev. in DA1. ****, I also love Zaeed. :) Old man crush? Hell yes.

Ideally, I would like someone who could make me laugh or genuinely care about their family life. Kaidan is a very serious and considerate individual, but seems to have problems taking things lightly. He's a serious guy with a pretty serious past. Jacob is also pretty fleshed out in that he practically had to raise himself. He is so independent that he has trouble opening up to Shep. I admire that as well, but it isn't something many people can relate to. Its why many people assume he's cardboard because he doesn't coddle or open up to the player all the time. Kind of like Sten in DA (who I loved) I understand why people love them. However, he doesn't really have much wit/dry humor to compliment his serious independent nature. Both human males are quiet, independent, serious, and strong. Garrus and Wrex almost ALWAYS make me laugh, even though they have serious problems.

I'm actually actively excited about James Vega and have a playthrough set aside that has a completely clean romance slate, just incase a new romance option was available. I hope that he's more positive."

Ahh poor Jacob. There a number of positives to his character and I'm fond of him I guess. I don't dislike him - in fact I like him, I just like some of the other characters a lot more.

That and Jacob's relationship wih his father is so far removed from his character that its no longer relevant to him.

Until she snaps on Joker after the collectors take the crew.  That was more out of bounds than Jacob's comments to Thane and Tali.  I don't care for either just because they are with Cerberus, but I like Jacob slightly more than Miranda.  But that isn't saying much.
