I just wish he would brood less and spill drinks more. Give him a little more of a thirst for battle (like an older, more
experienced Jenkins maybe) and he'd be a lot more fun.
This. His personality is also a little bit conflicted with itself, but perhaps that is simply natural. He disapproves of ruthless methods and is an honorable man at heart, yet he joins Cerberus willingly. He is meant to be a "stabilizing element" being the least unstable member of the team, yet he is a frequent pessimist. The super-hero outfit also makes it a little hard to take him seriously as a soldier, but perhaps thats just me not willing to suspend my disbelief quite enough.
I don't hate him though, or even really dislike him, just don't care about him much. I do hate the way Femshep talks to him though, that almost completely ruined the conversations when playing her.

And yes, I despised the way FemShep always talked to him..."I'm more interested in just talking for a bit.." ack! I ended up avoiding him like the plague just so I wouldn't have to hear her say that...like that...

BUT......
What REALLY bothers me is the way my FemShep acts around Jacob... It's gross how she becomes a teenage girl. I mean..... really? My FemShep is a badass. She would never turn into that for any man...
Just saying...

It's a shame fshep couldn't stop harassing him long enough for me to know him better. He seems like a very decent person in fact the only decent person in the whole game that isn't over the top he's average but that average demur makes him stand out to me.
I hope BW will actually let me get to know him minus the shep hot dialogue.

When she talks to Jacob, she goes "I want to talk about yoooouuu now." *wink*wink*
And then then all of her in-conversation dialog responses are also pretty flirty.
I just don't like being forced to flirt with him.

A few reasons why he is disliked:
(1) Standard male reaction to a possible competitor (I suspect this to be the no.1 reason for male players)
(2) Tali fans don't like his comment to Tali about EDI
(3) Miranda fans don't like that he had something with her
(4) Thane fans don't like Jacob's reaction to him.
(5) The "priize" comment (I suspect this to be the no. 1 reason for female players)
It's quite sad, since his romance, apart from the "prize" line, is very good. It took six playthroughs for me to try his romance, and I was really surprised by it.
I think the general preference for non-human LIs exists because we apply different standards to humans in terms of attractivity. Tali and Garrus don't have a face to judge for its appearance, so that aspect gets mostly ignored by the players, while in humans it's something you select by *and* both Miranda's and Jacob's faces have their problems at times.
Edit:
Some interesting correlations:
People who like Jacob also tend to like
*Kaidan (female player preference and human LI preference I guess)
*Samara
*Morinth (yes, both of them, a mysterious result - perhaps a little "rooting for the underdog" in it)
*Miranda (likely human LI preference, still somewhat surprising)
There are no particular correlations for people who dislike Jacob except a very minor one with Tali fans.
Uhh....I don't fit this profile...despite being a Tali fan AND a Thane fan. I think Jacob is AWESOME! When Tali was chewing him out after being nice to her, I was like WTF Tali? I understand both sides of the argument between Jacob and Thane, however. And I think "the prize" comment is the number one reason for all players.
I also like Jacob, but hate Kaidan (too bland and boring) and can't stand Morinth. Miranda grew on me after a while, but my initial reaction was "no thanks".

He's not a tactical genius or super soldier or anything like that, he's down to earth and can hold his own and is loyal. He just comes off as mundane and ininteresting next to, say, Jack or Samara. I never used him because I actively wanted to hear what some characters would have to say in certain situations, and Jacob never had those situations. He wasn't even necessary, seeing as through there were two other "vanguard" characters.

I guess these things happen, but note to BW:
femshep is not a hooker; she's a hero.
she's not a sex maniac, she's a romantic
give her a reason to want to pursue a relationship
and give her a chance to get to know the character
earlier i said jacob was rude to femshep.."if you wanna get friendly w/ everybody..", but heck, now that i think about it, that was the reaction of a dude that just got hit on by a hooker.

Several reasons probably.
1.) He is normal and isn't as much of a force of personality as the other characters
2.) Femshep's dialog with him is horrible. Seriously
3.) His skill set compared to everyone else's is lackluster unless you work a little to get it to work
4.) Switches personality with Miranda after Freedom's Progress. Turning him from a nice, reasonable person to, "Again!? Go away!"
Despite all that I don't think he is the most hated character, unpopular (though I think Kaidan is equally as popular) yes, but unpopularity doesn't usually translate to hatred. Just apathy.

Can't say I dislike him, becouse I don't know Jacob too good. The reason? The way my Fem Shep is talking to him. It's sound like she want to jump into his bed right now. So after I get Normandy Upgrade and Jacob's LM I never talk to him again.
Ditto. I cannot understand it either. For every other part of the game Jennifer Hale does a magnificent job as Shepard. Then you go talk to Jacob and it's like : um, where did my badass marine go and who is this pod person that's replaced her? It's especially weird if you're going in a romance with Garrus/Thane or staying commited to Kaidan/Liara. Like, what the hell Shepard? You're deeply in love with Other LI. Why are you talking to Jacob like that?

In my most recent pt, Jacob was my LI. Personally, I started to get a bit tired of, "we've got a gooooood thing going..." blah. Seriously, that's the best writing we could get? I think BW did Jacob a disservice with that horrible dialogue. Don't get me started on his teeth.

I mean his introduction is ducking behind cover from mechs! He gets no good cutscenes compared to other party members.
Miranda comes out shooting Wilson outright at Lazarus station (that's like wow); we see Zaeed kicking a Batarian's face with his boot; Grunt headbutts Shepard against a wall; Thane just drops and sweeps the room; Legion gets a choir fanfare... and the list goes on and on.
I do not remember Jacob ever having solitary cutscenes like others'.
I don't think it is the writer's or the voice actor's fault, but just the presentation of Jacob is really - and I emphasize on REALLY - lackluster. Here is to hoping he gets a good cutscene to introduce himself back on ME3.
