The rest of the game goes flawlessly. The mission where I have to enter a quarantined area to recruit the professor gives me trouble. After the dialogue with the guard, the game just crashes. Is there something I can do?

You can re-read Pacifien's pinned sticky about game problems and do as it tells you.

I downloaded patch 1.02 but it's still giving me problems. It still shows me a runtime error everytime I atempt to enter the quarantine zone.

If the game always crashes at the same place it probably means your files are corrupt and you need to reinstall. You won't lose your saved data.
