Also, it is a little creepy for me. She got better in Mass Effect 2 though.

True, but it reminded me. I can think of three other instances off the top of my head within the past week.

In Mass Effect 1, Liara was fine. Shepard had the option of disliking her if he or she was so inclined. Now in my canon save, Liara's a pretty good friend of Shepard. I also have two other Shepards who romanced her, one of them loyal (I like different variables). But I also have several Renegade playthroughs, some of them Shepards who just don't like aliens, including asari. One of them was able to threaten to leave her a*s on Therum if she didn't pipe down.
Then Mass Effect 2 came. No matter what you did she hugged Shep and Shep hugged her back. Including Shepards who treated her like dirt in ME1. To me that was forced. I can see a Paragon hug from my canon Shep since they were friends, I can see a kiss if she was romanced. But if Shep had an antagonistic relationship with her in ME1, just what made them friends all of a sudden in ME2? I know it was needed to move the story along (Liara saves Shep and what not), but it was almost as if we were being forced to like Liara.
Then LotsB came. Great DLC, no doubt about it, but again, if Shep didn't like Liara then, why is he or she going out on a limb to save her or looking upset once they "part ways"? The banter is a whole 'nother story. For a romance it'd be fine, Even for good friends. But why wasn't the general alignment and relations taken into account instead of giving a 'canon' relation with Liara.
Plus, her romance was weird in ME1 as I replay it. It seems more of a hormonal teenage crush than anything else. Plus her character was totally changed in ME2, all of a sudden she's a tough asari shadow broker who makes the same threats as her mother and doesn't care? I could see if she had those tendencies in ME1...but she didn't. And I'm sorry but no one changes that quickly over the course of two years, it sort of takes away her entire personality from ME1. I like Liara in ME1 and I like Liara in ME2, but to me they don't feel like the same character.
So in a nutshell I like Liara, but I feel she's shoved down our throats, just like Leliana in Dragon Age was (Leliana gets an entire DLC based on her, no matter what you do with her in Origins she 'gets better' in DA2, sure she's very popular *and admittedly growing on me* but keep the fanservice to a minimum).
My canon Shep's romance, believe it or not, is Jacob. She fell for Kaidan in ME1, having a history of serving together, giving much time for a relationship to grow. After she died and went missing for two years, Kaidan attempted to rebuild his life (even seeing a 'doctor on the Citadel', I'm assuming Dr. Michel?), and when he saw her on Horizon he didn't know what to think. His heart was totally torn apart and its likely he's past grieving, and he doesn't know just how Shep is alive or what even happened. Especially that she's rebuilt, is she even human? So many questions must come to mind. Shep offered Kaidan a place on her ship but he declined. Realizing this they parted ways, and in a conversation with Kelly Chambers Shep just told her it hurt but she has to move on. Jacob is a stable man whose focused on his duties. He's also the hero of ME: Galaxy and a credible character in his own right. Shep's not into dino-raptors, she doesn't swing both ways and she really isn't into non-humans, so Jacob just felt right for her. Considering he cares while not making her the center of his universe makes him that much more realistic, and to me, he's the canon romance for Shep.
I know it seems like a long rant but I hope my input makes sense, and I respect those who feel differently (even those who despise Jacob). Liara's a cool character, but definitely *not* the only let alone true romance for me...

Yes, it has been badly done...My Paragon as a friend pretty much makes sense...My Paragade makes sense (LI's her in ME1...but plays up badly after reafirming their relationship in ME2...I'm looking for backlash in ME3 there)...but my Renegon treated her like trashy scum in ME1, was shocking towards her...so whats with the hugs and BFF carry on in ME2 and LotSB?...Celtic Latino wrote...
Personally, I like Liara, but I feel that she's sort of pushed on us way too much, just like Leliana (and soon to be Cassandra/insert token Bioware female lead character) was shoved down our throats in Dragon Age.

For me, if Shepard didn't like Liara then why on earth would (s)he even help?
"Oh, you are looking for the Shadow Broker? Oh well, I've got more important things to do."
LotSB should be bypassed really by Shepards that are not friends with Liara really since why would Shepard help her out? Shepard isn't after the Shadow Broker.
That is one of the things wrong with douche-y "options" against your own crew. If they allowed Shepard to be that kind of wanker then they should have let the characters tell him/her to frick off!
Now that would be great!
