At this point I will settle for the retail version (first time I have bought a retail disc in years) if the retail version requires the Origin client I will re-evaluate my options.
Dear god no... if my harcopy requires online DRM I will pirate the game before buying it, or more likely not play at all. I buy a disc because I want the disc, I want the secuirty of owning the copy and being able to install and play months or years later when the nostalgia yen strikes me. Let EA run their own knockoff service if they want, but if they link the hardcopy to it they will not be getting my money. I don't care how good ME3 is.

The day Steam takes over the mass effect series is the day i stop buying their games.
PS. If anything, the OP should be worried about Origins and not Steam. In my case i wouldn´t buy the game regardless of those two.

Steam is enough pain in the ass, but I was young and stupid when I accepted that carbage on my computer with HalfLife2, I will NOT make the same mistake again. If EA wants to compete with Steam, please make a better version of it, a version that doesn't run during game, please?
Another funny story: there are games that require steam AND microsoft live. And then they wonder why piracy is running rampant!

Soon we're going to have twenty programs downloaded and running just to have access to the games we bought.
I got Steam the first day it came out. I wasn't happy, since I preferred the good-old physical copy and the WON servers. But Steam is generally good, but that's the last system I'm downloading.
When I heard the digital PC CE and DE editions were going to be Origin exclusive, I immediately pre-ordered a hard copy of the PC CE. We better not have to install Origin to play ME3 if you have the hard copy. Checking via online to authenticate the game is fine, but I don't want Origin. But I will grin in bare it for ME3. After that, I'm not touching any EA or BioWare game that requires Origin not matter what steps I have to take.

Just a heads up, it is ONLY the Digital Deluxe Edition that is exclusive to Origin. The standard edition of Mass Effect 3 is already up for sale on direct 2 drive so it stands to reason you will probably be able to buy the standard edition from steam sooner or later (if EA's track history is anything to go by it will be later).

Thank you for the clarification. I always intended to get the CE, but since for the time being it appears to be Origin exclusive and there was a post from someone from BioWare saying there were limited quantities (I assume he meant physical copies, unless there's a shortage on electrons for the digital versions) I just popped on it.

Console gamers don't see the meaning of that because they don't have such services in first place at all.
i'm definitely buying a second copy of ME3 digital delux for Steam as well (if its available).
in addition as a ME fan i own ME and ME2 both on steam and hard copy anyway, i wont stop on ME3. my ME3CE is alrdy pre-ordered and im waitin for Steam preorder announcements as well..
however i would not like to have ME3 playing only via Steam.
i wouldnt like this for any game.
it is best to offer choices to yours customers, or else you are f***ed.

On the topic as to whether or not we'd be better off with Steamworks, we should look at the alternative as well.
