No, he'll be a soldier and a tank.

Soldiers can use snipers, remember?

^ This.

I could be wrong of course, but, while he may be a sniping specialist, his AA armour is too bulky to be something an infiltration specialist wears...
As far as we saw it seems like he is a soldier, the tanking factor from the bulky armour could make him a Vanguard, but sniper wielding Vanguards are inefficient...

Unless he simply trained in using them just to balance the lack of ranged combat and sniping is not actually his specialty: that would mean Bioware has intentionally shown a misguiding combat bit to confuse us... :P
After all it seems everyone can use any weapon now, if I'm not mistaken...

I reckon he'll be an Engineer... and before anyone goes on about Engineers using Sniper Rifles... obvious response to that is Legion. Engineer with a Sniper Rifle.

Why Engineer...

Soldier - Ashley and Zaeed
Infiltrator - Kasumi (although someone will possibly argue that she's the engineer seeing as she can be used in the vent, but I see her more as an Infiltrator due to her cloak and FBG bonus)
Engineer - No one yet...
Sentinel - Miranda and Kaidan
Biotic - Jack
Vanguard - Jacob

So either James will be an Engineer or another so far unnamed squadmate will be I reckon to complete the 6, interesting note of course is how the VS positions are covered by another squaddie.

Several things wrong with your list...Most of who you have on there isnt even confirmed as a perm squad member for ME3, second you left out Tali and Garrus who happen to be confirmed squad members.

If anything (so far)...

Soldier: Garrus, Ashley*
Infiltrator: None
Vanguard: None
Adept: Liara
Sentinel: Kaidan*
Engineer: Tali

* = One or the other, not both obviously.

And obviously there is the still TBD Vega. Garrus has already got the Soldier/Sniper covered...I donno, Vega looks pretty bulky to be anything other than a front line guy IMO.

did you leave Tali out for a specific reason?

Is Tali human?

No
and the only reason Legion got mentioned was purely to highlight how
'engineer' squadmates can have sniper rifles. Tali doesn't have a Sniper
Rifle she has a shotgun. If you look at my post again you'll see how
the only squadmates I listed in the class list are human ones. Which was
the point of my post as to why I believe James possibly will be
Engineer.

That makes...no sense...are you under the impression that we will only have humans as squad mates in ME3? Why would you leave out SM's because they arent human?

Ok I'll put this into simpler words so that you might understand the point I am making seeing as it seems to be lost on you.

So far in the Mass Effect series we have had a human squadmate that pretty much covers each of the classes APART from Engineer.

Thus it is my belief in ME3 either James or another unnamed squadmate will fit an Engineer type role. This has got NOTHING to do with what squadmates we are getting in ME3 more to do with ones which have/haven't been covered by a human squadmate.

Oh and your list is wrong anyway, Garrus fits Infiltrator out of the usual classes due to him having Overload and in ME having pretty much the same layout as said class as far as armor goes.
