It struck me as rather odd that it seems that the Protheans were the only species that existed 50,000 years ago. There's no mention of other sentient beings existing neither by Liara or Vigil - the only two sources in game that know about the Protheans.
I think that in part, besides being caught completely by surprise by the Reaper invasion, it's a lack of cultural/intellectual diversity that played a part in their destruction by the Reapers. All the Prothean ruins, and sculptures look exactly the same so I imagine that they had a unifed culture, mentality, and sense of values. This applied to their problem solving and critical thinking, too. There may have been some leeway here and there but nowhere near as diverse as to how the salarians problem solve and use critical thinking when compared to say krogans, asari, and etc. My point is the Protheans may have had tunnel vision when trying to figure out how to defeat the Protheans because their cultural/intellectual/psyche would never allow them to see that far outside the proverbial box.
If you've ever worked ina group setting at school or work you'll know that if you have a group of people that get along reasonably well and have a diverse range of expertise, view points, and experiences the problem solving can be more diverse and fruitful then one person working on their own. The Protheans were essential one person.
Yet with the varied mentalities and approaches of the species in the galaxy of the current game that may be key to survival. As has been stated in ME2 humans are the most genetically diverse race in the current galaxy and they could be the keystone to fighting the Reaper invasion, but I think it will take more then just sheer fire power of turian fleets and hordes of krogans. It'll take that diverse cultural/intellectual/psychological mix of all the races working to solve the problem of the Reaper invasion if there's any chance at all of survival.
A Lack of Diversity Doomed The Protheans.

I think there is at least one point made in ME2: The Geth do not match up with the plans of the reapers. The highly varied bioligical stuff probably does not either.

I agree with the OP regarding the lack of diversity of the Protheans (although that's probably just due to some lazy writing/art design), but I think you should at least give them a little credit for figuring out a way to stall the Reapers for a while and give the humans, asari, etc. a chance to stop the Cthulhus for good.

I defintely give the Protheans credit. If it weren't for Vigil then Shepard and galaxy would be Cthulhu chow by now.AFter playing LotSB in ME2 I wouldn't be surprised if we found out additional plans/info/tatics the Protheans had come up with but perhaps never had time to implement 50,000 years ago.

i agree with jobasha, that is most likely due to lazy writing/ art design. it was easier to give all the prothean artifacts a simular look and feel. but i always felt that their people were all one race or something, we dont get too many details on the protheans so thats just kind of a crazy hypothesis lol.
