You've got three Alliance soldiers standing next to each other. Two are in heavy armor. One is in a leather go-go dancer outfit. This sends the message that armor is for men, and for women being protected from danger is a distant second to looking hot. How is this okay?

Vega's armor may be an exaggeration of gender stereotypes as well, but at least his stereotype doesn't fly in direct opposition of his basic safety. A guy wearing too much armor isn't nearly as insulting to me as the soldier wearing none save some kneepads, simply because she's female.

I find it odd that Ashley, the Soldier class, isn't wearing any armor, but Kaiden, the Biotic/Tech, is pretty heavily armored. That's like if Aveline wore a dress and Anders wore full platemail.

Exactly. Some people don't seem to get this; personality, role and context is everything.

Thanks for posting this.

Now I'm absolutely certain that the collector's edition isn't worth the higher price for me. This picture also validates my saving Kaidan, he looks infinitely more like a soldier than Ashley 2.0. Is there still a chance that Ash's getup is actually her casual outfit? Mr Vega looks like he walked straight out of Gears of War. I do love the level of detail in his and Kaidan's armour, though.

Absolutely.

It looks pretty sexist to me.

Ashley's outfit reminds me a tiny bit of Ashe from FF12's outfit. With like, the skirt effect.

This, this and this.

It's a perfectly nice outfit, and would look great on the right character. But that's the point - Ashley isn't the sort of character that would wear something like that.

Let's just hope Casey's talk of armor for her is indeed something different.

I wouldn't say Ash is wearing a catsuit. Catsuits are one-piece outfits.

This is BSN.

An outfit that is made of anything that resembles leather is a catsuit.

I'm curious why they didn't give Ashley form-fitting armor like that worn by Shepard. If they wanted to make Ashley sexy, they still could have done so by putting her in armor similar to Shepard's.

Image IPB

That's form-fitting heavy armor for females. Kaiden wears armor similar to Shepard. Why doesn't Ashley, especially considering Ashley is the frontline soldier? If anyone should be wearing armor, it should be Ashley. Kaiden is the fragile backline support who'd be more appropriate in a pink skirt in heels than Ashley.

I should probably say nothing since I already threw a rant in the other topic, but I have to say you expressed my thoughts perfectly. Now, can we start spamming BioWare with this quote?

...What do you mean it's not mature behaviour?

Truthfully, I would have preferred Nigel "Big Ben" McFishnchips over Vega. At least Nigel looked somewhat... intelligent?

I pray to God that those are early version of their armours.

Surely Bioware wouldn't be brain dead enough to stick to the retarded ME2/DA2 system of having everyone in impractical outfits for the entire game after the backlash they recieved for using it the first time around.

I'm just not having it that the first game in a trilogy has the more advance squad armour mechanic of the the entire series.

And I have to say, going off ME2 and what i've seen so far for ME3, there also seems to be a case of this...

http://www.collegehu...ale-armor-sucks

...going on.

And as for Vega.  He just screams "Look at me, i'm a dick."

I have no words that can convey the facepalming I keep doing over Ashley's outfit.  Or James Vega.

Two thumbs up for Kaidan.  Not so much for Liara.

And why is Ashley's hair constantly in her face?

*sigh*

Thane's outfit is made of leather as well and shows more skin than Ashley's uniform.

And you should probably stop using the word "sexist" so easily. To be sexist means that you don't accept that both sexes are born equal and is a very serious allegation.

Besides, we have been told that Ashley will get an "armour and a helmet", in response to another version of this outfit.

I hardly believe that this is what Casey thought would stop the rage.

If Ashley doesn't get armour in ME3, then you are free to blame Casey.

I suppose there are no girls in BW at all to tell the designers how stupid Ash looks

Well that does it! If the in-game Ashley "armour" isn't better than this then the one Ashley as VS save is going to be deleted. For heaven's sake give the girl the same armour as femShep - unless that is the armour for femShep! That's a troubling thought as they are doing things to her appearance.

I only dislike the Ashley one, I'll probably switch her to armour since she is a solider. Liara looks fine, Kaiden is great, and Vega, well, he looks just like he should, a tank.

Lol.

I didnt like Thane's outfit anymore than I liked Miri's and Jack's or even Ashleys new outfit.

And I was saying that it looks a bit sexist if the only reason she has armour like that is because she is a woman and to sexify her to appeal to the young straight male demographic.
That is the WRONG reason to do something like that.

And the wrong game to do it in.

The hell of it is, I could see an adept wearing that sort of outfit; just enough protection for someone who is more crowd control and at the back of the line. But Ashley's a damn soldier- she's the closest thing we've got to a tank. You don't wear a cocktail dress to a shoot-out, ffs, and that's what this looks like.

Yet Adept Shepard (male or female) must wear the heavyest possible armour in Me2 even when that really doesn't make sense for the character and it looks to be this way in Me3 as well.

Right. Funny enough, if I saw this exact outfit on Miranda I'd be pretty happy. It's a step up from the ME2 catsuit, at least. And it would be more in line with her character and her personal style.

For Ashley you can't argue that it's just her personal taste. I wouldn't necessarily call it 'sexualization' (at least, not after seeing Miranda and Samara's outfits). It's more like they're trying to soften her, make her less strong (less threatening?). It's just disheartening.

@Phaedon: Sexism is treating people differently because of their gender. I don't know how you can get a clearer example than the three soldiers comparison I posted at the top of the page.

Also, good for Thane, the one male character whose entire outfit was designed solely to make him sexually attractive without any thought given to practicality or protection. That makes Men: 1, Women... What's the number? I've lost count.

This is a go-go dancer.

Cut the hyperbole, Ashley is most certainly not wearing anything remotely close to that. If you think that qualifies as a "go go dancer outfit," by god, you must think every woman on the street is dressed like a go-go dancer.

True, but while characters like Thane and Jacob were obviously made to be sexually appealing to a female audience, they are just two of the rare exceptions. And for every one Thane or Jacob in the Mass Effect universe, there are about a dozen Krogan, Vorcha, Volus, Turians, Salarians, Elcor and Hanar who are all very non human looking and distinctly unnattractive.

Meanwhile, figures like Ashley, Miranda, Tali, Liara, Samara, Jack and Kasumi are all more or less the 'rule' when it comes to these things. All of them made to be attractive and sexualized, the alien ones only ever come in the form of a sexy human woman shape. Nothing else.
Sure, everyone LOOKS different but underneath they are all essentially the same shape.

Implying that while the male characters can vary into all different shapes and sizes, sometimes occassionally being very attractive, female characters are ALWAYS sexed up and ALWAYS made attractive with almost no exceptions.
That's the essential difference in place here.

And you should probably stop using the word "sexist" so easily. To be sexist means that you don't accept that both sexes are born equal and is a very serious allegation.

The fact that in this picture both the males are wearing heavy armor and aren't being made to look hot and yet both the women, including the one which was once considered to be equal to the men, are designed solely to be good looking eye candy might imply that the designers viewed men and women very differently.

Simply put, you don't have to walk around every day saying:
"Sh*t I F*cking hate women!"
To be classified as sexist, there are varying degrees of sexism.

Besides, we have been told that Ashley will get an "armour and a helmet", in response to another version of this outfit.

I suppose it doesn't hurt to dream. Like I've said before, I able to COPE with this current rendition of Ashley but I'd still rather her wearing armor.

I don't like Ash; Liara...kinda like an alcoholic or someone totally sleep-deprived. Kaidan is awesome and James looks pretty much as you'd expect him to look. Quite handsome though

I was referring to 60's style go-go dancer outfits. Long sleeved mini-dresses with platformed, heeled boots. Pretty darn close.
