I look at her outfit in totality and do not see 'tart', no. Not any more than Kasumi in her skin tight outfit or any of the other lightly armored characters in the series. Those things you listed do not change this.

^^ That neckline cuts off well above the cleavage.

The point is that having a neckline like that at all is monumentally silly.

I hope Bioware gives Ash some heavy armor, just so the fans will stop posting about it all the time

You're right.  He shouldn't be saying that Ashley's tarting it up.  Ashley wouldn't do that.  Bioware is tarting her up.

I was responding to one of the many absurd rationalizations, specifically the one that Ashley is deliberately dressing sexy so she can use her looks in "black ops Spectre operations."

My position is that BioWare are the ones doing it.

I got that.  I was just responding to what seemed like an accusation that you were declaring that Ashley was tarting herself up.  Sorry.

Do you not see the difference between what Ashely is depicted as wearing in that shot and what Kasumi wears?  Kasumi, despite the hood and apart from Tali, is better protected than EVERY female squadmember in ME2.

Tali as well. None of them are wearing armor that strikes me as capable of stopping a bullet.

Tali's whole thing from ME (despite really butchering it in ME2) was shielding.  Her shields would be so powerful that they compensated for lack of padding and/or plating.

The sole modern purpose of garters is sex appeal. That they don't titillate you personally doesn't really negate the fact that she is wearing what is effectively fetish gear.

Like I said, taken in totality I'm just not seeing her attire as intended to be any more titillating than any crisp-looking well-designed futuristic uniform would be.

Eh, Tali's looked like light armor, at least.  And it's definitely sealable against the environment, of course.  Though her AA one did look more armor-y

Ash doesn't even look that well protected.  maybe one small step above Ambassador Udina.

I dunno I really get the feeling the ME2 and ME3 Dev team are real big fanboys of Gears of War or something. Although I wish you guys would take a clue from them and give women the same amount of armor as the men.

I get the feeling they are deliberately trying to emulate that art style, or perhaps with a bit of Halo thrown in. Both ME1 and ME2 had their own unique visual look. I say stick with that.

Well for Miranda I don't see her as the front lines type of person, some armor for missions would be nice though.

But she's Sentinel, and following the logic I quoted, is tank

I'm saying just because she's a sentinel doesn't mean she has to be in the front lines.  Her personality never aluded to that. See: the Minuteman conversation before Freedoms Progress.
Anyway this is slighlty OT and was discussed in the support thread...it can be brought up there again...

The new look for Ashley really irks me. As a woman I think this sort of thing should fit the character, and it doesn't fit the Ashley we know from ME1 and Horizon. I could easily see Miranda in a getup like this, and it would fit Miranda's character, but Ashley is a "straight up puncher", not a vixen/minx/succubus like Miranda. Ashley would wear the armor that gives her the best protection in a toe-to-toe fight, not something that enhances her "curves" for dramatic effect, as Miranda would. Miranda embraces her rather intimidating sexuality, and it's perfectly natural for her to prefer catsuits. Her combat style complements her choice of attire, she's not wading in and tanking, she's undermining enemy defenses from cover. Plus, Miranda is a biotic, and biotics in general tend to shun the heavier armor types.

And Ashley's Nu Boobz—did she have a child? Or did she have augmentation mammoplasty?

Finished her boots. Sorta.

This looks a lot better. Hopefully something like this is available for her in ME3. I wonder if Bioware has the chops to actually put a woman in armor that doesn't go out of its way to show off her "curves"? Armor in ME1 was pretty non-discriminate that way.

But heaven forbid characters look like they're seriously going into gun fight. Far more important they look sexy and stylish above all else.

What? Garters are literally fetish gear. They serve absolutely no purpose other than sex appeal, unless you are somehow still wearing stockings without elastic and actually need them to hold them up.

I would not include garters and 4 inch wedge heals in a combat uniform, personally. What other reason would there be to include them, other than sex appeal? Is she waitressing at a themed costume bar?

A pair of garters does not exist in a void, it's part of an outfit. I'm talking about the whole outfit. Your premise is that the outfit helps people masturbate. I'm just not seeing it. Unless they have a fetish for women in suits.

Sentinels aren't the tanks, that's not their definition in M1 in any case.

A sentinel is especially someone Polivalente. Able to use technology and biotic powers. His defense is in the shields ( so no need heavy armor ) , while his  effectiveness ( biotics ) is in the lightness and movement.

I'm basing it of ME2, because it's the most recent game (and because the classes in ME1 had no interesting abilities at all) and the Sentinel can take the most damage of all the classes there with the right upgraded powers.

Her mock garters are hardly sexualized enough to be classified as fetish wear of any kind. I can understand disliking that they would even imply that sort of thing, but to jump off completely and say that it Ashley is walking around in fetish gear is silly as ****.

Tali's been in that getup from the beginning. Ash hasn't. Ash is a hard-nosed practical soldier. She wouldn't don a space skirt and silky boots. She wouldn't let hair obscure her vision during battle.

Why does Bioware contiue to do this...

My argument is that it is intended to do that.  And this is my evidence "in totality:"

Upsettingshorts wrote...

Wedge heels.
Garters.
Thigh-highs.
Miniskirt (or miniskirt-evoking shirt).
Lower cut neckline.
Longer hair.
Chest "armor" that forms tightly around the boobs.

By your logic, this is a uniform.

As a guy, I agree with everything here.

Well, except for the "female enhancement" part at the very end.  It isn't awful.  Or rather, it could have been much much worse.  Given some of the other ME characters, it's downright understated.

I can completely agree with this statement,  but,  things shouldn't be derided as fetish wear when one character is probably the face that launched a million latex fetishists.

Whimsy of the art department? They thought it looked nice? I think it looks nice too.

As for the practicality of it being a combat uniform. Again, meh. Light armor, etc.
