Tali spends every game in fetish gear complete with Gimp Mask...  no one ever complains.

I feel a disturbance in the force... As if... A thousand voices cried out in anger, and then suddenly hit the REPLY button.

The art department is filled with professionals. You know, people who would put sexy things on a costume because they're sexy, not "for the lulz."

@Upsettingshorts

I've seen women walk away from suicide bomb blasts with that combat attire. Entirely effective and I approve. ;)

I would not include garters and 4 inch wedge heals in a combat uniform, personally. What other reason would there be to include them, other than sex appeal?

Whimsy of the art department? They thought it looked nice? I think it looks nice too.

As for the practicality of it being a combat uniform. Again, meh. Light armor, etc.

Which, apparently, Liara's wearing in ME3.  Any further comment?

She's been in that getup from the beginning. Ash hasn't. Ash is a hard-nosed practical soldier. She woudn't don a space skirt and silky boots. She wouldn't let hair obscure her vision during battle.

Some people like to throw out Tali because they refuse to look at evidence.

Tali's suit isn't as offensive as Ashley's new outfit, because Tali didn't say that she'd rather have a armored suit than a dress in ME1. And she focused more on shields, so at least she's compansating for the lack of armor.

Her mock garters are hardly sexualized enough to be classified as fetish wear of any kind. I can understand disliking that they would even imply that sort of thing, but to jump off completely and say that it Ashley is walking around in fetish gear is silly as ****.

The garters, specifically, are fetish gear. Would "she is wearing an article of clothing that is highly fetishized and serves no practical purpose beyond that" make you feel better?

Tali's fetish gear actually serves a purpose. If Ashley's garters are revealed to imbue her with magical biotic powers, I'll buy it -- but until then they are kinda unnecessary, especially for a character for whom it would seem unlikely to make such a fashion decision.

The art dept. isn't lacking in talent. The art direction is misguided imo.

That's why I said:

Tali's whole thing from ME (despite really butchering it in ME2) was shielding.  Her shields would be so powerful that they compensated for lack of padding and/or plating.

Eh,  people seem to want to VS to be brow beaten into submission for their remarks on horizon... perhaps this is the beginning of a subby Ashley.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the armor,  I admit I would prefer something heavier myself to be truthful.

I just think it's kind of amusing when people are using "Fetish wear" as some sort of negative when one character could essentially be a walking fetish icon.

I actually like the outfit, but not for Ashley Williams.  Can't say the same for the more notorious Mass Effect 2 examples, that's for sure.

I have no conceptual problem with "fetish wear" or designs that purposefully evoke fetish outfits, nor the outfit itself. Just not on, you know, a character who has explictly expressed derision for the kind of impractical sexy-first-function-later outfit she now appears to be clonking around in with her gigantic wedge heels.

THIS. I really don't like the art direction. Form should follow function, and appearance should support characterization. Unless Ashley's being mind-controlled by an asari stripper, her new costume and insta-boobies just doesn't follow the characterization we've seen so far. Her hair and makeup are fine, I even think she looks nice from the neck up. But come ON, the Ash I knew would never tart herself up like this. Unless this is some kind of super-experimental prototype carbon-nanotube-out-the-wazoo armor, I'm Just Not Buying It. And that still wouldn't explain going from a B-cup to a D-cup in nothing flat.

Not for the lulz. For the sake of giving her an 'iconic appearance' using a combination of elements that work well together.

And I think the difference between your nurse 'uniform' and what Ashley is actually wearing demonstrate what I mean about the difference between something specifically designed to be titillating as opposed to... not. I have to say this boils down to the "I know it when I see it" argument.

@Xeranx yes, Liara is wearing light armor as well.

Same here. I have no problem with Miranda's choice of garb, because she's the type who would totally prioritize a vixen appearance. Heck, I get the impression she designed her outfits herself, and probably Jacob's as well. And Samara is an asari, who have completely different ideas about modesty, nudity, etc., than humans, and her costume might have cultural significance we aren't aware of. But Ashley is Not That Girl, or at least she didn't use to be, as recently as Horizon. So, what gives, Ash? Clearly James Vega has been assimilated by the Borg, have you been assimilated by Playboy?

No, but I couldn't help notice how dead her gaze looked in that picture. compare with Kaid and Vega and you see more... life... in their eyes. Ash looks... disinterested, a dead gaze, so to speak.

Liara (if that really is her, she looked more like Samara to me, except for the clothes) wasn't looking too good either.

The guys in that pic look great, but the girls faces/gazes don't look good.

Not to read too much into this, but if I were teaching a "gender in the media" class I could use this image as a PowerPoint slide, since it is a perfect example of how men are represented as active (the male characters are looking at you) while women are represented as passive (the female characters are being looked at).  You know, that whole "gaze" thing, where the viewer is always assumed to be male.  (I am not.  So I notice these things.)

Mass Effect has always had great female characters, even the ones with distracting clothing.  I LOVED Samara, even if her outfit was ridiculous, and Miranda was a strong character even though I couldn't stand her because she was constantly telling me what to do (um, whose ship is this, anyway?).  But I miss the ME1 days when we all had the same off-duty outfits and the same selection of armors in combat (barring class restrictions) and it felt truly military -- or at least a sci-fi video game version of truly military, anyway.

I prefer the Starship Troopers model of gender portrayal to the Star Trek model, which is what Ashley's new outfit makes me think of, what with the obvious go-go references and all that.  It isn't a catsuit, it isn't nearly as egregious as Miranda's outfit, and it's actually quite conservative.  I can kind of buy it if it's some kind of formal uniform, and think it looks pretty cool (I hope FemShep gets some decent uniform/off-duty outfits) but not not not in combat.

FWIW I thought Thane's and Jacob's outfits were just as ridiculous as Miranda's.  And no, I did not find either one of them particularly sexy.  (Thane might have been, but I couldn't get past the fact that he looked like the creature from the Black Lagoon.)

I don't see anything that could accommodate a seal with a helmet on Ashley's outfit. Well, looks like the galaxy's second human Spectre will be limited to operating in oxygen/nitrogen atmospheres! Such a shame!

She needs her 'on the night out' outfit for combat to be iconic? Ashley had an iconic look in ME. Nice to know that Ashley's going from iconic practical, strong, and beautiful female soldier to iconic impractical, strong, beautiful female soldier who's sure to die many times due to TPTB opting for her to enter combat in a go-go outfit.

So Ashley is wearing that outfit because her Spectre duties have her operating undercover as a flight attendant in the 1970s? The bird on her collar is obviously some airline's logo.

Vega looks like a fun character. As he isn't armed in this picture, I am going to take that as confirmation that his weapon of choice is headbutting his opponents into oblivion. He also has a mounted cavalier on his breast; perhaps, much like Shepard's omni-blade, he gets an omni-lance? Not for stabbing people with, but I imagine he just likes to hold while charging forward to execute a leaping headbutt.

Liara is wearing an odd expression, as though she's somehow found herself in a Scooby-Doo mystery....

That's it!

 - Liara is bookish, intelligent, and a bit introverted. She's obviously Velma.

 - Ashley, on the other hand, is extroverted, outspoken, yet somewhat ignorant, and obviously is only there for eye candy. Which would make her Daphne.

 - Kaidan is the quiet, unassuming and world-weary guy who'd rather not be there, but is reliable never the less. Also, in ME:1, he was never far away from the mess hall. I think that makes him a lock for Shaggy.

 - The Collectors' Edition comes with a robot dog. Scooby-Doo himself? I think so.

 - Of course, Shepard is the leader, comes up with ridiculous plans that always seems to work, and is on a personal mission to collect as many STDs as possible. N7 stripes, or orange ascot, Shepard and Fred might as well be the same person.

 - As for Vega? Scrappy-Doo, for all the obvious reasons.
