Hmmm. I'm not seeing this as just a re-color of the original skinsuit. Looking at the circle chapes on her legs in the trailer they do appear to be separate outfits. That said, her current outfit selection is lacking in the armor department for sure. To me however, this new outfit appears much more proffesional than the blue version skinsuit. If ashley was at a military ceremony for example, I could see her wearing this (very) light armor, instead of her skinsuit, or even her original heavy armor. Not as a matter of sex appeal, but as one of respect for the Alliance. Also, who is to say Ashley's character is comfortable with the change in her armor? I would be quite pleased to hear her express her dislike for the uniform she currently wears. The overt sex appeal could be something she dislikes, but in either case I like the new outfit despite her not being alive in my games as of now. IMO it looks much better than the skinsuit and more tasteful. But that's just me
Her two outfits thus far seem close enough. There are differences between Liara's versions as well, but Liara's are both nominally labcoats (the white one seems layered with tough fabrics/ceramics and places for gadgets), just as both of Ashley's are catsuits. Sad how Liara seems to be wearing more protection...
I'm with you in that this version makes Ashley "more" professional than the blue one did, but neither catsuit is professional for a Marine grunt from a universe in which hardsuits are the way to go. Just because BioWare pasted a "S1" label to suggest establishment-backing for her catsuit does not mean we need to "respect" or "give credit" to such a token cop-out. Given what we know about hardsuits in ME, this...thing...she's wearing would never be part of acceptable military attire. And Ashley is military to the bone, regardless of who she answers to.
You mentioned a few ways that BioWare might "address" this. Even if they followed through on every single one of those, they would still be insufficient excuses for sticking her into an unreasonable sci-fi chain-mail bikini. The Ashley we know wouldn't waste time whining; she would jack the closest unattended hardsuit for herself. She would even jury-rig one. There are no reasonable excuses to suggest someone like Ashley would "make peace" with the idea of fighting to the death over a long period without her armor. BioWare may or may not try to come up with something, but there isn't anything that would be plausible aside for blatant honesty. They're playing down to the shooter crowd.
