Glad they've finally gotten Ash out of that dull Phoenix (it was Phoenix, wasn't it?) armour from the first game. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather each of my companions have a small selection of aesthetically-pleasing, custom-designed outfits (and I do mean outfits, screw realism and everyone being forced to wear heavy armour, they have kinetic barriers for Christ's sake) instead of that bland, awful mess that was Mass Effect 1 armour.

I just love how people use ''they have kinetic barriers'' as just  excuse for the most horrible combat outfits, i really hope that they would read the codex once in a while.

(masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Codex/Weapons,_Armor_and_Equipment)

No kidding, any one who has so much as read the cliff notes in the codex knows that kinetic barriers are limited to high velocity impacts. They do nothing for melee fighting or DEW (directed energy weapons) nor do they have any effect on heat transfer (fire).

This

Heavy plates please for my 'straight up puncher' marine-to-the-core front-line badass who prefers 'nice solid armor and a big gun'.

I think Ash is in her casual... its an invasion, when would she have the time to change into battle gear? And it isnt bad, its good. She has no heels per se but a platform. I'm fine with her looks really. but I expect her to wear a battlesuit in the thick of it all...

See this is something I agree with a bajillion and one percent.

I have no issue with what Ash is wearing (I do take issue to her boobs being bigger) - she can wear that with her hair down whatever I don't care, its great, super even - BUT - - the second - the very moment it looks like we're leaving for any - ANY kind of combat. If she doesn't stay true to character and suit up in SOME kind of armour and pull her hair back...

I will get very choked up.

not impressed ... at best (looking at Ash and Vega).
Though I admit they did a great job with the new shaders. The metal really looks metallic.

Armor (at least in ME1) was never supposed to be "metallic", it's supposed to consist of interlocking ablative "ceramic" plates and flexible bullet proof padding. So as far as the "ceramic" look goes -- the ceramic looked a lot more "ceramic" in ME1; here (you're right) it looks rather metallic.

If Ash had a dialogue choice in ME3 where she explains her new getup, would you all feel better?

Don't forget what diamond chemical vapor depostion does to ablative armours though. Silaris Armor, while far too cost prohibitive to see regular use in starcraft construction, can also be used for personal protection (i.e. the plating of medium and heavy armour.)

Codex snippet: -A popular misconception holds that the diamond composition of Silaris
armor gives it a sparkle. In fact, atmospheric nitrogen impurities
during the super-hot forging process give the armor a metallic gray or
yellow sheen.

Key words being the "metallic grey" or yellow sheen.

No.

This is a freaking betrayal of Bioware's legacy. They've had a long history of strong female characters who didn't need to wear sexed up outfits, but instead wore armour or other appropriate clothing for their role. Giving Ashley a skirt is simply the latest example of Bioware moving away from that in order to chase after the mythical 'Call of Duty' crowd. The two Roid marines on either side of her hardly help.

Can you point out some these characters?

As long as Bioware is with EA, this is something you need to get over. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's the brutally honest truth. Even if Bioware wanted to go back to that, EA would want them to keep this route cause it panders to the casual crowd.

Ashley's alt look is hopefully a bad joke from BW.

Where is her armor?

I want my ME1 Ash back.

And it's a Skirt. Or more of a dress. Either way, she's got some Zettai Ryouiki going on too, which is something I didn't expect to see.

Well, not to nitpick or anything, but two characters doesn't equal a long history. I think Ashley's look is fine. And Casey Hudson said that we can put armor on her.

...BASTILA your kidding me how was she in any way shape or form a strong character? you could be a complete **** to her and she would still fall heads over heels inlove with you plus thats a skin tight catsuit as well it just doesnt show a zipper down the front like ashley's does

hell i found mission to be a stronger character than she was =/

also "2" characters does not a strong line of females make

Two characters in their biggest series. Of course, I can show this one too.

Now, Aribeth had the exposed chest, which was a disappointment, but she was actually mostly wearing armour. Which is still an improvement over Ashley's new look.

Oh my god, you're right! That makes her bare chest (pretty much a "aim here!" bullseye), garters and thigh-high boots okay!
Especially on a front-line marine who said she'd prefer SOLID ARMOR.

But who cares about being faithful to the character? Only idiots want consistency, right?
Also, nevermind the sheer hipocrisy/sexism of getting the female soldier in that getup and have the two guys in solid, thick armor.

sigh...

Bare chest? Where? What garters? And the thigh high boots aren't that bad.
