Blasphemy, this is BSN, get your non-hyperboles and moderate views out of here.

I am kidding again, of course, but do you disagree with me that (by you, I am not referring to DryIce):

If you can't express your opinion in anything but exaggeration  and aggressive pessimism, then you should probably keep it to yourself?

Imagine 100+ people getting out on the street and yelling:
"WTF X SUCKS"
"PRESIDENT X IS RETARDED"

to each other.

How do you think that it will work out?

These forums are no different, their low quality lately can be attributed solely to people raging and attacking each other.

They had better. Hudson's twitter pointedly dodged the fact that his women characters thus far are still being singled out for exploitation, and that's even with or without the "option" of full armor. Because the men atm are still "safe" from this BS as far as we know, thanks to the double standards of sexism and homophobia. BioWare is quick to advertise the Ashley catsuit as her default first and foremost, and it seems they're determined to keep it for the Dead Or Alive gamers in a way that pisses on those of us who don't like it when women are treated as jokes.

"will also have full armor" means f all. That says she'll still come with the unreasonable catsuit and we can all infer that BioWare is either unwilling to commit to equal-opportunity exploitation with Kaidan in the same sense, and/or unwilling to advertise even if they were willing to commit as they were oh-so-willing to exploit Ashley. Either way is still no good, since females should not be singled-out for this burden. BioWare needs to eliminate the asinine catsuits, or else put everybody in them.

You call for sexual maturity yet you use a username which is defined as an adolescent boy who was courted by an older man, or was in an erotic relationship with him. :?

Nothing to it.. I just find that amusing.

So how is this

Ditto. Those posts are a little over the top. Chill out, buddy...

I agree that it might be a little over the top, and I certainly don't think that the people at bioware intend to degrade women in any way (especially after creating so many well-written female characters) but he is right to point out subtle double standards like this that exist not just in this game, but in all media.

This perfectly describes what I see when I look at these costumes.

I honestly think you people crying bloody vengeance over Ash's outfit should sit back and calm down. We still don't know if that's her only outfit/reskin, so perhaps we should wait and see, then freak out?

Please. The blue-version of this catsuit is her default appearance, which BioWare made sure all their dudebros and wannabes could see during E3.

This trash is going to be a female Marine grunt's default appearance. Meanwhile, the heavy mech armor is going to be Marine sentinel Kaidan's default appearance. Logic fail, unless you're on BioWare's team or a wannabe for BioWare's team, both deying the existence of blatant sexism and misogyny in the presentation thus far.

Or just take your torches and pitchforks, set course for Bioware HQ and be done with it if that's what you really want.

Doing it here is better.

We don't have to back up our protests in the least. BioWare is the one that needs to defend itself for this BS.

So, you're saying that just because BioWare isn't necessarily on a mission to undermine the women's movement then that means somehow BioWare is definitely above undermining women?

I usually don't save Ashley on Virmire. Surprise! It's because my MShepard is in love with Kaidan. So I'm going to address the whole "why is Eromenos even bothering with this" angle. Remember how Miranda, Samara, and Jack were all presented in ME2? It was a sad, low-brow departure from ME1. These Charlie's Angels outfits were not presented to be affirming towards women. Women can enjoy them, but be sure these are always put out there for dudebros first. Women are only allowed to come along for the ride in the devs and dudebros' eyes, and they particularly love the females who avoid deconstructing or criticizing the exploitation in these situations.

I'm with you in the sense that I find it even more ridiculous that BioWare would think to get away with this on the Ashley character, of all things. Given their history with ME2, this BS is a very likely symptom for widespread exploitation of many more, if not all, female characters slated for ME3.

Wait, undermining the women's movement?

Did you have to bring sexism to the discussion? If you can't realize how eye candy has never been exclusive to one gender (Jacob, Thane, generic male body model) and don't realize that accusing someone of sexism is to accuse them of not believing that all people, regardless of gender have equal rights and equality in general, then you are probably undermining the women's movement yourself.

She will also have full armor and helmet.

While this is good to know, a picture is worth a thousand words.  So to settle this once and for all, we'll need to see either:

A) A picture of "armored Ash"
or
B) a 992 word essay describing her armor and helmet in detail.

Otherwise the interpretation of what is "full armor" is very much an open question.  WIll she look more like Kaidan or Samara?

Is it possible that the way they're are dressed reflects their character and their jobs? It's easy for us to jump on people like Miranda and claim it's just for exploitation but have we considered that some (not all) young women will dress like this just because it's what they are?

For example, Miranda knows her body is perfect and is fine with using it to further Cerberus' cause. She's cold and calculating and uses anything to her advantage. To me, it also reflects her insecuity with herself.

Jack wears what she wears because she doesn't care. **** anyone that tells her what's proper etc. Also, it gives her an opportunity to show her tatoos which in turn speaks a LOT about her personality and what she has become.

I can go on.

Yet we decide that rather because their look is provacative it must be becase Bioware is appealing to the casual, horny mainstream and not because the clothing is a reflection of the character. :?

This topic has made me wonder about things, female role in games and other media, comics, tv-series, etc and what people really want at these days again.

It's kinda makes sense, kinda doesn't to think that maybe something has actually changed over the years. When I think about many b-films from the 60's and 70's and exploitation, there was big demand for films where plot made barely any sense at all, props were poor, the idea was to show bare skin to audience in drive-in theatres. Some film makers have later admitted it openly that "Come and see some boobies! Come to see ****ing!" was what they thought young couples that arrived in drive-in places wanted and they did pretty well with their cheap films.

The whole thing doesn't work with video games. There is one person playing a single player game like Mass Effect. I can totally see someone thinking like that one cannot go wrong with adding more sex, making a strong male characters and helpful but not too powerful femine sidekicks, perhaps show some skin, it worked back in the day... it sure works today too. But IMO, it won't work.

Selling stuff to us by associating them with pre-defined gender roles seems to work for some products, marketing cleaning essence for example, but in other products, especially in games, it's IMO losing it's edge.

Sexuality has been demystified from the times of drive-in theatres and time before VCR's DVD's and the Internet a lot. We get to see candidly glad females (and males) in lot's of places, adverts, music videos, anywhere.
Anyone who have access to Internet also have access to endless galleries of beautiful model girls, or guys and actual hard core porn as much as they want. What is the added value for gamers if she got changed to more feminine version of character we knew earlier?

It's good that Casey has promised us that Casey have also heavier armour. I really appreciate if BioWare gives us options to customise squad mate outfits. That said, I won't pre-order CE before I see some pictures.

I don't get it. In ME1 all the ladies wore armor, no heels included, for their day jobs of wading through muck and getting shot in the face.

ME2, suddenly only fem-Shep and Tali are dressed for their jobs. Add in DLC and you get Kasumi and armor-Miranda. I'm willing to go a little easy on Jack as she's crazy and probably cares a lot about her image, but Samara and regular-Miranda should have known better. When the kinetic barriers go down, which they will, you probably want at least a little something in between you and the bullets/grenades/claws/lasers.

ME3, and we have Ashley, of all people, in heels. I hope fem-Shep isn't in heels by default too.
The heels really overdo it, as I can understand not wanting a helmet so that the player can see the characters' faces (although in low pressure/poisonous atmospheres helmets are a must, I think), but by and large players aren't looking at the characters' feet. Also, I dare anyone who thinks it's practical to wear heels for an active day of running and gunning to go outside, in heels, and run around and jump over any chest-high walls they can find.

But who cares? Anything to make Bioware look bad, right? :innocent:

Given ME's history of hypocritically exploiting F/F while refusing to address M/M or even to produce a F/F relationship that doesn't play into dudebro titillation, I should've chosen a name that's even more belligerent and antagonizing towards the homophobic appeasers who think BioWare is some champion for queerness. You know the ones: "Be grateful you get to have Kelly!"

The fact that Hudson vaguely twittered about M/M being finally "allowed" into ME3 does not in any way guarantee affirmation for queer gamers. They've shown us nothing, but we have a body of BioWare's homophobic practices to look back on.

Oh, yes. You're like many who would say that Ashley must be in a Princess Leia slave outfit before we can accurately claim misogyny. Ignoring the wedge heels that make her combat viability a joke. Ignoring the loose-hair that can get caught on anything and everything or be grabbed by her opponents. Ignoring the skintight fabric with no discernible pockets or generators to supply a shield, stimulants, HUD, or medical system. Ignoring how such an outcome offers her no protection in combat because she can't be wearing "men's clothes" lest the dudebros get angry about not having their obligatory T&A.

But who cares? Anything for her to look more hourglass and femme is thus a-ok for you, right? :innocent: Even if it renders her defenseless. Especially if it renders her defenseless.

I'm late to this thread, but I think Liara's justicar outfit... isn't very good. At least not for her. Too much of a priestess kind of vibe there, which suits the more ethereal style of Samara than super-nerdy scientist Liara.

James' arms look too short, his chest to big and his legs look too skinny, which gives him too much of the dumb jock look. He looks too much like an adolescent bully right now, and no, the mini mohawk doesn't help. A quick fix might be to brighten the tones/trim of his belt & legs, and do something to diminish his chest area (maybe delete those shoulder things). Balancing out his proportions should help make him look less cartoony and hopefully more respectable (ie: intelligent).

Kaidan and Ash look good. Ash has kinda lost her buff girl look from the previous games imo. Ash used to look like she was bigger than Kaidan.
