well the detials are:

i tried two ME1 versions, steam and disk

both did not work but at least with steam i heared music lol

when i start them up all i get is ether a neverending start window (what pops up before the game boots up) or a black screen that if i uttempt to exit cases my pc to crash.

i have tried tons and tons of options and alot of them from here
(before i made an account for this fourm)

the wired and realy anoyying thing is that ME 2 works fine on best quality all options on (films, sound the lot
) DA O also works fine. and if i am not mistaken these games share alot in make up.

it may all be problems with the disk or steam for all i  know and i have been wasting my time but i suspect its a problem with my pc,

i have normal XP windows,  some of my stuff is a bit out of date i guess as the pc itself was made in 2007 i think but it is not a shop pc and was costem built with what was considerd to be the best at the time.

my point is that if ME2 works perfectly then it can't be a problem with my drives or my video or sound can it? does any one know what sistems are needed for ME1 that are not needed for ME2? because that may narrow down the list of possible problems

thanks

Just for information, old drivers can be the fault. Drivers can work perfectly fine with one game but having issues with an older game. However as you said I don't think that's the problem in your case, but it seldom hurts to update the drivers.

There might be a problem with the in-game configuration that's causing your problem. So if you already haven't tried it open up the configuration menu from the start-up screen and look trough so everything seems good. If that doesn't work or if you are looking for help with another matter sometime I strongly recommend you to post a bit more information about your computer so that others can more easily help you.

For further support on those forum it would be appreciated that you register your game so everyone here knows that your not some guy who illegally downloaded your game :)*

Good luck

*Edit: For clarifying, you aren't able to register mass effect 1, however I presumed that you own other BioWare games, since you said you had played them on your computer, which you are able to register on your account.

Something that I see hasn't been mentioned is that Mass Effect I actually is somewhat more demanding on hardware than ME-2 is, save for video graphics card "feedback" speeds. You can't play ME-2 at all with a very slow graphics card, since the environmental interaction requires more speed than such hardware can offer.

I am not totally convinced it is a driver problem. I think it's likely (and I do hope that's all it is), but it could also be a windows update, an errant runtime library or maybe a Net Framework update that might also be causing this odd behaviour.

I have already installed Nvidia drivers from 2010 (258.96), the very same drivers that ran the game fine when I first bought it from Steam after un-installing the latest drivers. More worryingly, I have also noticed some of the other games that I have which also use the Unreal engine are crashing in exactly the same manner. For example if any of you have Alien Breed:Impact, try that and see if it works. Mass Effect 2 is also crashing in exactly the same way.

I think there is more to this problem than would seem apparent, although I do hope I am wrong. My last hope for now is this new beta driver from Nvidia (275.50). I've just downloaded it and will try that next.

EDIT: No luck with ME1 and the 275.50 beta drivers. Guess I will wait and see if Nvidia can come up with a solution. I still wonder though if it's something else thats causing this problem.

Use the ME1/ME2 config utilityto give us the specs, if we eed anything extra we wil ask, but 90% of the time the details listed in there are enough for us to troubleshoot.

@Geraldine: Have you ercently installed Kapersky AntiVirus 2010/2011? Those versions have been shown to have problems with games running on the Unreal3 engine, either crashing them randmoly, or preventing them from running at all.

Hi Bogsnot1, thank you for your reply. No I dont use Kapersky but I do use Avast. I am going to try turning it off just to see what happens. Thanks for the tip ;)

Disabling Avast is a great first step, as this can sometimes cause crashing issues. Another reason a game may crash to the desktop with or without an error message is the presence of User Account Controls from Windows. This is a built-in feature that basically doublechecks what the operator of the computer is doing, such as installing programs, running programs, or downloading.

Here's an FAQ on how to disable the UAC for Windows Vista/Windows 7:
http://support.ea.co...etail/a_id/380/

Try these two things and please let us know if you are able to run the game.

Hi EA_AgentX
I tried disabling Avast, disabling Zone Alarm firewall, stopping all but the most essential services via msconfig, updating DirectX, using older Nvidia drivers, using the latest Nvidia drivers, uninstalling the game and re-downloading it again from Steam and I dont have UAC as I am using XP to run Steam. I should point out that I have already completed both the Mass Effect games twice over on my system. It is almost like something has thrown a switch to stop these games running. It's really odd. In all my years of gaming, I dont think I have ever seen such bizarre behaviour before. I dont know what else to try now as I am fresh out of ideas.

like i said my windows is rather old but ME2 works fine, i am having issues with making space for ME1 at the moment (i like to leave 50 and more g empty) and today is my birth day but ill get around to it tommrow as i have got leave from my work.

is it possible the steam version after failing to work on my pc may have left some data that is causing the disk version to be at fault?

That is possible I guess. You could go into the registry and clean out anything you find related to ME1 (there should be a few files left in "My documents" and in the Steam directory too), but do be careful not to delete anything for ME2 (or anything else for that matter) as you could seriously knacker your PC. Playing around with the registry can be dangerous. Oh, and happy birthday :)

It is possible that extraneous registry entries are still present on your system, causing an installation failure. Here's an FAQ on manually uninstalling Mass Effect: http://support.ea.co...tail/a_id/2133/
Please note: Some of the steps involve editing the registry of your computer. You must be very careful during this process as removing the wrong entries can cause system failure.
